Well. I hate to say it, but i've been on 4chan. My friend was on it and i saw it over his shoulder. At first the whole idea of /b/-ing with my /b/ro's was very confusing and i didn't understand a single thing on it. But it got me thinking.
They've made their own little world more successfully than anyone before. Ever.
Seriously. If you go on there for more than 5seconds then the language will not make sense. They have their own words own cultures and even new meanings to already existing words, and some pictures seem to be more symbolic than religion.

Yeah, sure. It is full of extremeists of every kind. But that sort of balances it out, because you can be argueing against neo-nazi's of how certain things just don't work or to communists on how no matter how much they reform their economic standing it just doesn't make that much growth. Then your heart will be warmed by Hypno-toad saying that haters gunna hate.

I was drawn. I've managed to stay away and not quite be as addicted as some people who go by the "laws of the internet" as if lucifer himself had threatened them to do otherwise. But i found it amazing that they've created this culture so successfully and it pretty much runs itself.

P.S ALOT of the content is 18+ and NSFW. So i advice you not to go on it, because no matter who you are. You will be insulted. And you will insult. And you will become one with the chan.

That's not really a culture, it's just a social network. Cultures are less 2 dimensional

That's my point. I feel that it isnt 2d. It has it's own little ways. Like a culture does. take a social network. You go on a page and you can get the general rift of whats going on. But with that, i feel theres more. You have to be accepted to udnertsand whats going on like a culture.

But Twitter is exactly the same. There's more to a culture than a language. There's a unique history (which you could argue it does have), a unique creativity (which it doesn't, most of it is ripped off), and most importantly, it isn't created by one person, it's created by loads of people, and it evolves like a society. 4chan will always remain constrained within it's barriers and perimeters, with no chance for a natural evolution. You'd be better arguing that the internet in general is a culture, because it is

I do see where you are coming from though

it is a culture. I did a dissertation on it. They are actually a step further from just a subculture and known as a 'superconsciousness'; which basically means they have no cultural icons or leaders and just fuel themselves.

u mad?

It's not 4Chan, the internet is it's own world. It's just we have different countries, and I view 4Chan as North Korea. Stomping in where they should stay the fuck out, having tantrums and doing weird stuff. They even attack people on the same website as them. Besides, they're not even that big or impressive anymore.

Though they did Raid the website that the French version of Anonymous was based, 4Chan was raided first and lost Drawball.

If you think that 4Chan is another world because of their in jokes and troll speak and the ability of function, then look around. The entire Internet is another world, each with it's own quirks and way of speaking. If you're only going to say that 4Chan is the only culture on the internet, go to the Bungie forums, then go to the Twilight forums, and then stop here for a while longer. You'll see the difference.

Quick tip to anyone who does visit /b/. First thing you may notice is the word "fag" used pretty much every other sentence. They, surprisingly, are not actually very homophobic. They really use that word to describe everyone on there.
Oldfags, newfags, summerfags, gamefags, moralfags, furryfags. You get the idea.
So yeah, if you do go there you do kinda have to accept that they are so used to using the word that it no longer even holds any homosexual connotations anymore.
Sounds fucked up, and it is. Just roll with it or stay out of the pool.
I'm kidding... the pools closed. <.<
And WHY is the pool closed? :D

It's not a shame to admit you've been on 4chan. I go on 4chan fairly often, because it is true- whilst it holds the world's assholes, they're also quite brilliant. It is a nation unbound by the boundaries of our own respective countries, where nothing is too terrible, nothing is censored and everybody is a fag. Strangely enough, for all the 'internet hate machine' rap it's been given, 4chan is not hate. It's simply chaos, anarchy, where people of all kinds will get together to swap stories, tell jokes, post pictures of cats, compare cock sizes and anything in between.
The other word, apart from 'fag', to watch out for is ******. You'll see it a lot, but it's rarely not a joke. Perhaps a joke that in normal society would be offensive or over the line, but on 4chan there are no lines and you can say what you want, thanks to the gift of anonymity. Even if you don't like them or what they're saying, I really think people should go and lurk moar for at least one afternoon, and see what truly goes on in that place before they make their judgements.
Also, even though it may be despised by the ordinary folks (who have never seen it and probably can't appreciate its value), 4chan, and particularly /b/, has done more for civil justice in the last few years than pretty much any peaceful protest. Who's fighting for your right to be anonymous and free on the internet? 4chan. Who saved that cat after it was thrown in a wheelie bin? 4chan. Who fought scientology's mind control? 4chan. So yeah; visit and make up your own mind on this one.

But yes, 4chan is a culture, but just one in the massive world that is the internet. Ever seen this? http://xkcd.com/802_large/

Jesus man, chill. I'm not saying it's the only culture i'm saying i can see it as one and it's pretty amazing it was formed. I will totally admit that the internet has it's culture, but the internet is so widely used i don't really find it that amazing. 4chan is one website of ( a total guesstimate) billions and it has a massive cult following, which, like you said, pretty much goes out on crusades.

Yes, they attack their own guys. But i'm starting to find it difficult to find a culture which hasn't. Apart from switzerland. Surely conflict in a culture is a good thing, it shows different opinions and that freedom is allowed.

Sorry calumon, didn't want you to go there. Wish i didn't to be honest!

Anyway. Just chill, i'm not on a fight for 4chan. I hate most people on their and most of the stuff doesn't make sense to me. But i'm just stating i consider it to be it's own little culture which is surprising to have formed. Not that it's the only one. There are millions of subcultures on the massive subculture of the internet of the massive subculture of countries in the culture of earth. So if you're going for the big picture and trying to look intelligent, EVERYTHING is a culture in some form we could say existence is a culture and that everything else is a subculture.

Sorry for the massive post but i felt attacked and that you didn't understand where i was coming from.

Okay i posted a massive response but i think it messed up and so i can't be bothered to retype it as i have to go out soon. So i'll throw the main idea.

You've misunderstood where i come from. I don't say it's the only culture, it's one of millions on another subculture: the internet on another subculture: Earth on the culture: Existence. But i find it amazing that this one subculture has expanded itself so far into peoples hearts that they have so many ways many people wouldnt understand. So what if they attack their own people? Nearly every other culture has! It's shows a difference in opinion, a freedom.

Yes the internet is a culture, but it's accessed by so many people it's not surprising it has it's own little ways. 4chan is one website within billions (at a guesstimate) and it's managed to get such a following they can, as you pointed out, go on their own little crusades. I even got people to do one for me. They supported me against a guy who i got CB'd from and he got his ass kicked both online and beleive in real life by people i didn't even know were channers. So yeah, theres alot of hate. But you must hate people where you live, where you work. But theres also alot of love. Alot of respect as everyone on there understands that they're together.

Dear Calumon, i'm sorry if it seemed that way! I wish i hadn't gone there and so wish you not to aswell. P.S What's this i've heard about you making a comeback to t.v?

Nah, I'm kidding. You're not mad. Fair point, from reading what you said, I thought you were just saying that 4Chan is the only world that functions on the net. Now that you have clarified that is not what you think, we can party.

It's not billions by the way, that's waaaaay too much. I would put it at quite a bit less. Maybe 10 million? 50 million? 100 million at a big push. While it's true that it's the biggest english imageboard on the net, and that if you refresh /b/ even after a second you loaded it up, everything is different from all the sages and bumps and talking and spamming desu everywhere.

Calumon: Am I? I know that some people have but they never talked to me! The last thing I did was that movie thing. They put yucky stuff on me for that. : (

I've made a culture before. Here's an example of what it looked like:

Biology FTW.

NotSilly: It's not really a culture, but it does have some culture-like aspects. One of the features that it lacks, however, is survivability in being passed down through generations. How long has 4chan been around? About a decade? On an anthropological scale, ten years is nothing. It hasn't even lasted as long as Akhenaten's rule of Egypt, which lasted for only seventeen years but had a massive impact on Egyptian culture during that time. 4chan really hasn't impacted the Internet all that much aside from a few amusing images and phrases, which usually don't originate from 4chan anyway.
