I liked how some of the powers overlapped a bit against certain enemies. If you're being buzzed by aircraft, you can either take them down at range with the Whiphook, or use Musclemass to punch holes in them. Shame Hammerfist is rendered obsolete by the blade power; it cracks tanks a lot faster and the Whiphook does way more AoE damage.
And the Shield defense power made obsolete by the Armor? Hell no! You can't glide, roll, or airdash with Armor active, and you still suffer knock-back. Mobility > Protection. The hardest boss in the game is ***Spoiler - see below***, and Whiphook+Shield combo knocks the shit out of him/her/it. Actually, Whiphook knocks the shit out of every boss. And basic enemies. And allows you to hijack helicopters in mid-air. And grapple enemies from a distance. And you can pretend to be Indiana Jones.

Lesson of the Day: the Whiphook kicks ass.

The Hardest Boss... is Elizabeth Greene

I've heard the graphics complaint several times and I must say, it's not as bad as people say it is. They are more like original Xbox/Wii graphics than PS2. But yeah you're right, the AI is dumb as rocks.
It just shows how aesthetically spoiled people are when it comes to games now. I've heard people say they will refuse to buy games because they don't look like Gears/Crysis. This was one of them, and another was Call of Duty, talking about if they 'don't fix the wall textures, I won't buy the next game. It's like I'm playing counter-strike'.
I've never really been concerned about graphics, unless they feature heavily in cutscenes. Luckily, JRPGs rarely have bad graphics, so lengthy cutscenes are usually pretty.

Games like [PROTOTYPE] aren't made for you to just stand and stare at a wall. You're supposed to sprint past buildings. The game's too fast paced to care about the graphics, in my opinion.
I've heard enough people complain. I have never been one to compare about graphics unless it doesn't even hit the bare minimum mark of quality (which hasn't happened yet), but like I said, people have been spoiled.

I spent some time in the middle of the story mode doing Events to buy more upgrades so I could beat a stupid mission, which I can't bloody beat! I hate defending objects. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! Stupid Leader Hunters are too damn clever. =(
My answer to this is, again, the Whiphook kicks ass. Charged heavy attacks in mid-air on anyone who goes for the thing you're defending.

That's odd. My version calls it the Whipfist. The Hammerfist is really only good for smashing buildings.

I use armour more than shield since shield only seems to be active while sprinting, and I don't sprint too often in combat. No, I merely jump over my enemies and flick the whipfist into their faces.

A serious question, is it worth playing when you know the major plot point? I'm seriously pissed off but I still kind of want to play it.
Oh yeah. Now you only know that he's the virus. You're going to end up wanting to work backwards to find out just how he deluded himself into believing he was human.
Also, I often forget what most of the story points are, and I still love playing it.
I say go for it still.

Hook, Fist, it's all the same. And Shield is active when you're locking onto something or running, but not when you're attacking.

I have to try this!

Nice review, but I disagree with something. People keep complaining about Prototype's graphics. I admit they're not Crysis good, and may not even be up to par with what you can expect from a current-gen title, but saying it looks like a PS2 game? That's a bit harsh. Not even GoW 2 looked this good. But I played it on the PC, and games always look better there, no exception (that I know of)
My first thought when I saw the graphics was of the Transformers movie game. The buildings didn't texture as well as most current-gen games, and the graphics we so selfishly expect. =P

EDIT: (Read the spoiler) Oh no! You ruined it for me! :p
I didn't know that. I knew that you were the Blacklight, but I wasn't sure whether Alex even existed in the first place.
Ahhh I took a closer look at the textures (and even compared them to my friend's 360 version of the game versus my PC version) and you're right. There is quite a bit of texture pop-in, especially when flying or sprinting, and while the buildings do a good job of fooling you into thinking they're more real than they look from a distance, when you're sprinting up a building it's easy to see that windows are just yellow squares on a larger blue square.

Why. The. Fuck. Does everyone call it [PROTOTYPE]? Brackets don't go in a fucking title. It's just there to make a goddamn logo. Other than that, I don't think that it really is necessary to tell the reader all the powers Mercer has and their function.

Nice review. Can't think of anything to say right now...

I haven't finished the game, so that plot point made me =(. I'm probably still gonna go beat it, though, if my frackin brother doesn't try selling it for another game.

Very nice review, Ive finished the game, but I'm not that keen on the plot , it sorta lets go of its self at the end.

Actually, it is "[PROTOTYPE]". Everywhere in the manual it is referred to as "[PROTOTYPE]", and the back of the box calls it "PROTOTYPE". So regardless, it should be in all-caps, and the brackets fit it.

Also: I'm only five(ish) gameplay hours in and am only missing three powers (one of the ones I'm missing was demonstrated in the tutorial at the beginning), so really, it's not like you're getting much spoiled.

When you play on Xbox LIVE, other people will see that you're playing [PROTOTYPE]. Not 'Prototype'. The brackets are part of the name.

And I tell the readers their functions because otherwise people are gonna be asking questions about them, and rather than just answering the damn questions, I'll stop the temptation ever arising.

Honestly, most people I know rave about Prototype, but I think it is waaaay over-hyped. It consists of these three things.

1) Go here.
2) Kill things.
3) Get new abilites.

Once I played it for long enough to aquire all of the upgrades, I became so bored with it. It's way to repetative.

The same formula applies to pretty much all games. Just with variations on the 'kill things'.
