Proxies and Steam purchasing - Help please!

As a New Zealand gamer I'm used to getting pretty ripped off by everything, including steam now. Arkham City is on sale for half price, but the Australian steam RRP is $99.95. I know it's half that overseas, so I'm looking for ways I can pretend that I'm a US steam user to gift it to my other account.
Could anybody help me with proxies, or alternatively, purchase the game for me and I'd be happy to pay you back by purchasing you a game from my side of equal (or slightly higher) value that isn't overpriced here.
I'd really appreciate it if somebody could help me out here!

Steam doesn't like proxies precisely for the reason you just mentioned.

I have tried to get Steam working with a proxy, because at work we have to use a proxy. I have tried different programs and I have searched the Internet, but I never could get it to work properly.

Thats a good alternative. Prices are in NZD and i usually get them in a week or so (they ship from the UK). bear in mind that they dont ship over the holidays.

Thanks for the help there mate. I'll definitely look into it, but it's disappointing knowing that its still almost twice what I'd have to pay if I just got it on special like it is today.

Can you not just pay someone via PayPal etc and get them to gift you the game? I've done this before to help out EU members who get ripped off vs our UK prices.
