Is the story integrated with the gameplay?

Cause if it isn't, then I'm sure as hell never gonna check it out. This is the problem I had with The Last of Us. I could have experienced the best parts of that game if I watched a YouTube playthrough. The gameplay was so goddamn boring to me, and it only served as a bridge between the more interesting parts - the cutscenes.

And that's been the problem with so many critically loved games nowadays - if it fails the "YouTube test" (patent pending), then it may have fantastic writing, themes, characters, etc., but it sure as hell isn't something worth playing, at least in my experience. Other examples - Bioshock Infinite, Gone Home, the GTA series, etc.

Planscape torment had game mechanics which were explained through the story and story influenced game mechanics so yes, the two went hand in hand.

so dose that make me weird for replaying fallout 1-tactics at the moment or gamers too picky? anyways this still dose not solve the problem that no one is using it as a example of how to make a good story for a game.
The answer is that the console market is "mainstream" now and, no offense, but the games nowadays are made to cater to people with low attention spans.

So they have to implement hand holding features in RPG's so that they keep the players interested. Why do you think Skyrim is so praised by everyone (aside from the small few that, myself included, that finds it terrible compared to previous titles).

The only bastion of hope that we have left is CDPR with Witcher 3 and the niche CRPG resurgence due to Kickstarter: Divinity Original Sin, Torment Tides of Numenera (supposed spiritual succesor), Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity are the only games that will come close to that old school feel and close to PST in terms of story, but I doubt they will ever surpass it.
