I second the vote on Chrono Cross from zombieshark6666. Best OST I've ever heard in video game + multi threaded plotline, very philosophical at times. Unique fight system without MP's and grinding. Honestly, how many jRPG does not make you grind? It's worth the praise just for that:)
You can get classical Final Fantasies I-VI (from NES&SNES) on PSX as well as Chrono Trigger. I'm just throwing it out there in case you were interested (but still, CT is awesome).
Also as mentioned before - FFIX is arguably best FF of the series (at least IMO) - it returned to "Fantasy" setting, was funny and serious when he needed.
As for FF Tactics - better get one on PSP - it's much easier. I got lost in plot after few hours of LVL grind that game made me to do between each boss battle. Pretty nuts when you realize that this game story is not so easy to follow (complicated politics with ALOT of characters).

targren - TY, saved dat list 4 later :D
Just adding to your point on ff9 some of the most best looking video segments I had seen on the ps1 IMO Love the end cut scene where zidane rides the ... oops almost said to much and spoiled it but you get what I mean right?

The list can be quite long, but a few personal favorites:

Chrono Cross
FF7 and 9
Breath of Fire 3

If you can find them: Persona and Persona 2:eternal punishment are two excellent Ps-one RPG's.

Now you could get Persona on the PSP for cheaper but Mark isn't black anymore and the rest of the characters have weird hair color so...

Im currently tossing up whether or not to play Final Fantasy VII-VIII for the umpteenth time, but i figure i should branch out a bit. I did play Xenogears quite recently, and the first Suikoden.

Any one have any suggestion/recommendations for an awesome PS1 RPG?
Any reason in particular why you didn't play FF IX?

I'd say give Vagrant Story a try. It's a welcome change in both story and gameplay.
hmmm, at the risk of having this thread turn ugly.....i thought it was kind of lame.

childish, silly characters are what ruined it for me. got to the 3rd disk, but had long since stopped caring. i just cant understand why they reverted to this kind of baby world after the overwhelming success they had in the steam punk, darker worlds of 6,7, and 8......probably to mix it up. i also blame 9 for the rash of weak, feminine lead characters that where to follow.

but thank-you for the suggestion. Vagrant story sounds interesting (you know, like it wasn't made for children :) and im going to have a bit of a scout for chrono cross today.
YOU DARE NOT LIKE FFIX? LET THE FLAMING BEGIN

nah just kidding have you ever tried the monster rancher ones?

-The Legend of Dragoon. Master the additions...And conquer. Or not,'cause Doel will dole out an ass-whoopin',and the Grand Jewel will level drain you.

-Final Fantasy VIII. Master the junction combonations...And beat the game at level one. It's possible. Bosses don't give XP.

You are free to sever the chains of fate that bind you...

Yes, actually, I recommend -

Ahem. Well, if you've played FF7, FF8, and Xenogears (the best RPG ever, on any platform) then... um...?

Oh, wait, I know! Parasite Eve! That's a very good RPG. The original, not PE2, which wasn't an RPG at all (and was instead a Res Evil clone).

Heh, that's okay. Apparently it's one of those love-it-or-hate-it installments. Even though I loved it I can't deny there are plenty of characters that are downright annoying. Quina (makes Cait Sith look good), Eiko (shut the hell up, brat), Zorn and Thorn (Biggs and Wedge they are not) and of course Queen Brahne (who makes Jabba the Hut look good).

Although Zidane is a nice, energetic change of pace from the brooding Cloud and Squall, he may indeed have set the infamous "Meg Ryan" androgynous look standard for FF X and XII. Together with the outrageous Kuja that is. I bet there are still players around who to this day believe that Kuja is a girl/ woman. One of the worst cases of "Dude looks like a lady".

However, I also can't deny that FF IX has a better story than FF VIII (time-traveling witch wants to condense time, yeah right).

I wonder, if you would be sentenced to play a FF title for the rest of your life and you could only pick from IX and XIII (yes...that is 13), which one would you choose?

i think you may have just created a philosophical question to rival the great tree-in-the-forest-does-anyone-hear-it conundrum.

admittedly, i would take IX, because at least in the context of its world, the characters are believable. Hope, and Snow, might actually be the worst characters ever conceived. and Sasz and his mini choocobo stopped being funny very quickly. Also, traveling down a FF XIII corridor for the rest of my days, is actually pretty much what i imagine hell to be like.....

Oh and thank-you Square Enix, on behalf of all my fellow Australians, for mocking our accent.

i sincerely hope that was your intent.

No mention of Azure Dreams. This is madness! Azure Dreams is an amazing randomized dungeon crawler with fantasy monsters to train and a town to build up from scratch. Yay Azure Dreams!

IX. I didn't really like IX either, but I can actually call it a Final Fantasy game without inducing vomiting. I call FFXIII a game in the same way I consider Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within a game. It's a DVD with an overly complicated menu, and the most player repelling combat system ever created.
Heh, in my mind the question "FF IX or FF XIII?" sounds like a rhetorical one, but I guess it's not. You see, I have encountered some ardent defenders of XIII here on the Escapist. They defend the story ("gripping!"), the combat system ("innovative!")...they even defend Vanille ("She's not that bad really!").

I know, I know. OPINIONS!!1!...but to me it seems they either have low quality standards or little material to compare with (as a result making FF XIII look good).
