Heya all,

Just what the title says, I'm looking for some Co-op games for the playstation 2 that me and my 10 year old son can play together. I'm not looking for fighting games or anything PvP as I have some of those already and I don't let him play them. I'm looking for some type of puzzle platformer or something where a second player makes the game a little more fun and you have to work together.

Are there any such games out there?

Thanks in advanced,

-Kagatos

What about Fifa 11?

You can play against each other, 2 v 2 (Online or offline) and is generally good fun.
I play against my Dad all the time on it.

This does depend on the fact that you both should have a mild interest for football..

My uncle and cousin play halo reach together. I know your son is 10 but my cousin is about that age so I reckon it's a fair suggestion. edit: lol, forgot about ps2 no idea, i only played timesplitters co-op on that...

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2

You'd be fighting monsters and bandits together, if that's not a problem.

Thanks for the ideas, I haven't messed with the PS2 in the past 5 years now so I'll look into the Lego games...for some reason I thought that those were only single player.

I wasn't sure about the sports games as all those seem to be verses instead of Co-op. Not that I mind crushing him in some games at times but for the most part I wanted us to have to work together.

They made Baldur's Gate for the PS2? Hmm, I might have to check that out then. As for the Ratchet: Deadlocked...is that the Ratchet and Clank series? I've heard those were fun and over the top.

Thanks again for the ideas...Keep em coming if anyone can think of anything else.

The kind of awful Half-Life port had co-op, and that could work.

I have almost no experience with PS2 multiplayer, since all my gaming on the console consists of MGS3 and RE4, with a little DMC mixed in.

I would highly recommend Ratchet: Deadlocked, it is loads of fun.
This, this, a billion times this, and also games like Dynasty Warriors. Just change the voices in the DW games to Japanese if you can. Some of the worst English voice acting I've ever heard.

And while you're at it, see about Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, which ran on the same engine and played in a very similar manner. I had the PS1 version, but all Gauntlet games are pretty similar. Just so you know, the Baldur's Gate games on the PS1 are basically Gauntlet games with a level up mechanic set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. They aren't the same as the PC games.

(Edit: And if it's not clear, I was adding to what the person I quoted said, but not specifically replying to it; all instances of the word "you" are aimed at the OP.)

Edit Edit: Just thought of a couple of other games that allow for Co-op, and should be fairly cheap, if you can find them. The Sega Genesis Collection was a budget game released towards the end of the PS2's lifespan. It contains a bunch of classic Sega games, several of which have 2-player co-op modes. Specifically, Altered Beast, Bonanza Bros., Gain Ground, and Golden Axe 1, 2, and 3 have full blown co-op modes. Kid Chameleon, which is a neat little Mario clone, has Mario style turn based multiplayer, and Sonic 2 allows the second controller to control Tails in singleplayer, effectively giving it co-op.

There's also The Bouncer, a semi-decent beat-em up made by Squaresoft, which allows for up to four player co-op, if I remember correctly. I wouldn't shell out much for it, but it sometimes turns up in the under $5 bin at Gamestop, and is certainly worth that much.

Finally, as others have mentioned, the Timesplitters games are great co-op games. All three of them have solid co-op modes, so just keep an eye out for any of them, and grab a copy if you see it cheap.

Oh my gosh you warm my heart random person!!
Crash Bandicoot is a good one. Racing games, expecially ones with powerups and weapons in them. Games where you have to find collectables. Oh did I mention how much I love you for making a video gaming effort with your son? That is just really really really awesome....I might have some daddy issues to work out after this.

EDIT: I never did this with my dad, but if you want you can both play pokemon at the same time, trade, battle, and compare and help each other and stuffs.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King had a fairly decent coop mode. It's pretty difficult, but an ok game.

Time Splitters: Future Perfect, I played this with my little cousin around the same age and we had a blast. It IS however rated M but since you are the father you can be the final judge.
Lego Series: pick your flavor of Star Wars/Indiana Jones/Batman/Harry Potter and enjoy an afternoon or weekend.
Gauntlet Dark Legacy: better on the Gamecube with four player capability off the bat but if it is just you and your son then go for it.
Alien Hominid: Classic side scrolling instadeath shooter with hats and over 200 levels of a puzzle game called PDA games.
The Simpsons Game: if it is anything like the 360/PS3 version then it should be multi player.
Any Dynasty Warrior game: Personal favorite is Warriors Orochi 2 because it combines Samurai and Dynasty Warriors and you get a team of three at a tiime.
Metal Slug Anthology: 7 games of bullet filled side scrolling mayhem. All very short and sweet.

That is all I can think of at this time, I hope some of these have helped.

I wouldn't say Gauntlet: Dark Legacy's PS2 port was particularly good, but it is a great game, especially if you're into co-op.

This and add:

It is a wonderful game and I love how both players have different powers unlike other Co-ops where the 2nd player is pretty much a different skined clone of player 1.
