Ok, first off, I'm an admitted 360 fanboy.

I believe that the next gen console war really got started over the price. PS3 owners felt the need to justify the extra price tag by flaunting the features like Blu-Ray and built-in WiFi and better graphics in the faces of 360 owners, and 360 owners typically counter with the "Our games are better and for adults" argument.

Nowadays:

1. The system prices are relatively equal.
2. Both of the latest generation of systems have low failure rates.
3. Blu-Ray players are cheaper and more prevalent.

It pretty much levels the field for a comparison of the consoles. Since I recently went shopping for a new console, I can say that it really comes down to the games and what appeals to each person. The graphical differences between the systems are really negligible and if you choose one over the other because of graphics I think you're a sad human being :).

For me the major problem I have now is that the console hardware is too different from 360 to PS3 to Wii, making it harder for developers to support all 3 systems. The Wii can't even compare to the other two and as such has basically given up on the hardcore gamer market and focused on casual gamers. Sure it's sold a lot of units but that gravy train is showing signs of slowing down.

The other problem is that the 360 and PS3 hardware is fundamentally different, they even use different formatted discs. This causes devs many headaches, so much so that developers like Valve and Ubisoft pretty much just told Sony to fuck themselves and started producing content only for the 360.

This I think puts the PS3 at a slight disadvantage because it seems that developers who elect not to go cross platform are preferring 360, but it also means that both parties miss out. I know perfectly well that Fat Princess could easily be an XBL title and that stuff like Left 4 Dead could easily run on the PS3, so in the end it's the fans that lose.
