Yes I know everyone has known this for ages, but I recently bought a PS3 and thought it would have backwards compatibility for the ps2, it does not. This is my first playstation so it's not a big deal for me, but whats the deal with this? Why would they make such a decision? Is there any hope for people like me who would like to try the Kingdom Hearts games? Share your thoughts, also, anyone think I should just pick up a cheap ps2 and some games? If so what ps2 games should I get?

Because they want more money of course. They said a while ago that "People who buy PS3 games don't buy PS2 games".

In other words, Sony decided that if you had a PS3 you weren't going to be buying games that were on the PS2 anyway, and vice versa.

-sigh-

wait... since when does it not play PS2 games?
The new PS3 slim version doesn't have it... sad face :(
well... there go my plans for getting a PS3... that is the WORST development/marketing decision EVER in the games industry since the Virtual Boy.
You can likely pick up some of the older PS3's which do have backwards compatability on eBay or other second hand places, but really, your best bet is to just go buy a cheap PS2. S'what I did.

How much do those go for nowadays anyway?

People who may buy PS3 games may still want to play their PS2 games. That is the only bad thing that I hate about both the x-box 360 and the PS3. I know the 360 is able to play some x-box games but I don't think it is many.

I should not have to go onto PSN or x-box live and re-buy what I already have.

Sony originally said it they scrapped the backwards compatibility-chip to reduce the PS3's price. Fair point I guess, but isn't the PS3 powerful enough to do software-emulation..?

I have the only backwards compatible type of PS3. It was limited edition and I dread to see how much it costs now.

Cheap PS2, yup.

From a quick browse of eBay, anywhere between £80 (119 U.S. dollars) and £250 (372 U.S. dollars). Amazon has them from £160($238)-£250($372).

You can get a (new) 250 gig slim for about the same price, and that's not counting bundles and deals and whatnot.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I just got a PS3 slim and I'm disappointed by the backwards compatibility. According to the manual, you can't play PS2 games but you can actually play somePS1 games. What the hell gives? And why can I create a virtual PS2 memory card on the hard drive if I can't play PS2 games? So they can sell PS2 games to me again via the PSN Store?

Not a huge deal though, I still have my PS2. It's just incredibly annoying and a cheap business tactic.

They were trying to stop the financial bleeding when they got rid of backwards compatibility. They still loose money on the damn console when they make it. I feel sorry for them in that respect.

It's not about making money, it's about not losing as much. That contrasts with the other companies of this world very strangely.

I enjoy my PS3 immensely even without backwards compatibility.

The older ones get the Yellow light of death and brake after one or two years, so I guess no matter what way you look at it, Sony still takes your money.
