Never had a problem and it is widely regarded as having better playback than a lot of dedicated players that cost more than a PS3. Decent HDMI cable and you are all good.

PS2 as I recall had some real problems with aspect ratios and certain format dvds but I've never had a problem with the Bluray playback.

PS2 do play DVDs however the DVD player (hardware) is known to screw-up fairly often but quite easily fixed if you are willing to open it up and tinker with it. Other than that, the PS3 has a blu-ray player, it plays blu-ray discs.

Never had a problem playing Blu-Ray movies on my PS3. Then again, never had any problems playing DVDs on my PS2 (except region codes of course, but I've got another player for that). YMMV I suppose.

I wasn't aware DVDs not playing on the PS2 was even an issue. The very concept doesn't even make much sense seeing as the games themselves are on Bluray discs, so obviously the system can read Bluray just fine. Always possible there could be any of a number of issues caused by video formatting, regional restrictions, or whatever, but as far as being technically capable goes, of course it works, and I've never had an issue.

The issue with PS2 DVD playback was that the format changed and you needed to update firmware to ensure largest coverage of format differences. This was before the consoles were hooked to vendor networks, so you had to buy the update with a DVD remote. This led to the impression that the PS2 wasn't a reliable DVD player.

These days, format changes are handled by firmware updates over PSN. This ensures that the vast majority, if not all, Blu-Ray discs will play on a properly functioning PS3 (by which I mean, the laser isn't dirty or some-such). If you're having an issue, it is very likely either hardware issues (like a dirty lens), firmware issues (like disconnected from PSN for too long), or disc issues (like a bad pressing).

Hope this helps.

It is one of the better Blu-ray players on the market and it's definitely the most bang for the buck.

Remember, Sony invented blu-ray format. DVD was Panasonic I think? I might be mistaken since they did HDDVD, but I think it was them still.

While the PS2 was an adequate DVD player for most people, the PS3 was more or less top of the line for Blu-Ray players at release because Sony made it. That being said, as formats and firmware updates happen, I have experienced a problem with 1 disc, that being said, the problem was not unique to PS3 or Sony Blu-Ray players. It also may have been resolved because there've been like 4 or 5 system updates since I last tried to watch that disc last Christmas.

Not a problem.

Seems to default to warmer colours than my stand-alone player does too. Samsung's "BD-wise" feature seems to think that a washed out image is ideal for basically everything.

Tossing in my vote too.

The PS3 Blu-Ray is a known quality product. It was one of the best when it was released, and it works great now. Even works for 3d. Go updates!
