PS3 Firmware 3.60 Bricking systems?

hi, i am glad i found this forum and some others about ps3 3.60 update issue
here is the story: i have a 60 gig fat region pal ps3 2007 launch (i have UK region account)
i have never modified it in any sense.. i play alot..its a veteran ps3..like always it was working like clock since before update 3.60, but after the update which i did on 3/11 it started to act spooky..
1 or 2 hour after the update when i was playing a simple song on my ps3 it auto turned off!
blinking in red in a non-stopping way.. i surprised a lot it was the first time ever it acted like that..
i turned it on, it resumed working fine.. during gaming and stuff it had difficulty loading the game and other stuff (which i was playing Demon's Souls at the time)..i didn't pay much attention..
today 3/13 in the morning i started the ps3 started DS after 10s of starting boom! it auto turned off.. i was standing there for a minute like WTF? then i turn it on it brings the wavy starting thing of ps3 and right there it freezes before ps3 logo pops up..going into flashing red again.. i turn it on there he goes..
it goes green in the beginning then immediately turning into blinking red with that scary sound of turning off then yellow light of death then continuing blinking in red..

same thing happend to me twice
me an dmy brothers 20 gigs decided to auto update and im like sure whatever and the moment that they finish they get yellow lights
i think that the update was ment for the slim ps3s and not the 20gig ps3 that we were using
is there a way to format and reinstall a previous unupdtaed os on to the ps3's

I also have a MGS4 80 GB (Fat) that died after the 3.6 update. A coworker also has a Fat ps3 that died the same weekend (March 19). I think the update may have had an "energy saving" component that made the fan spin slower or less frequently. That would explain why it would be effecting the older ones, and not the slims.
There are a LOT of cases of this on the playstation.com forums. I've contacted the BBB, and encourage others with the same problem to do the same. Both had the classic YLOD symptoms.
