Valkyria Chronicles, a mixture of an RPG, Turn based strategy, and third person shooter. Has great gameplay, story, and graphics.
Valkyria Chronicles is a must play.

Warhawk is one of the bet multiplayer games this gen.

The Sly Cooper Collection.
I'm playing through the Sly Collection now and Sly 1 was just great; I don't know how else to describe it, Sly 1 is like taking great 2D platforming levels and making them 3D. Sly 2 is open world and I prefer Sly 1's awesome linear levels; however, Sly 2 is a pretty good open world game with interesting and diverse missions, much better than say GTA's or Assassin's Creed's open world-ness.

---

I know you said you loved MGS4, give Metal Gear Online a try if you haven't. In my opinion, MGO is the best online shooter this gen without a doubt. It's definitely the most innovative, old-school, and hardcore shooter this gen. The skill difference between a good player and an average player is very great.

Also, MAG is the best FPS I've played this gen because it's the least devolved FPS meaning that MAG doesn't have moving spawns, there's no 1 button nade tossing (you have to cycle to a nade from your gun to throw a nade), and there's no auto health regen. Plus, there is kinda of a class system where you can be a healer or repairer, and not have be a great shooter to help contribute to a victory. And MAG's objective design makes it so that campers do NOT help the team win.

Heavy Sword is a really good game as well, it's not just a GoW clone, as it's much better. The battle system is pretty unique where you have to switch between 3 stances to fight effectively. You block by not attacking while in the correct stance, the aerial juggling is pretty interesting, the countering is great, and the super moves are pretty cool. Plus, several enemies are only vulnerable to certain combos so you just can't button mash. The game is pretty cinematic with good characters (the actress that plays the lead in Fringe is the voice of the main character) and the ending is pretty epic. You can get it for $10-$20 and for that price, it's definitely worth it.

If you like baseball, MLB The Show is by far the best baseball series this gen, it blows MLB 2k out of the water.

Some games to keep an eye on next year are The Last Guardian, SOCOM 4, and LBP2.
Weird, I hated Sly 1. I got Sly 2 first, then found Sly 1 in a bargain bin once, was not impressed.

OT: I pretty much second all suggestions except Killzone. God I hated that game, way to clunky.

I'm surprised that Uncharted hasn't been recommended. God of War 3 is a pretty fun game, pretty decent end to an over the top series.

Folklore is also really fun and has some pretty cool game elements.

I really think only a few games have done open world/sandbox right; Mercenaries, Fallout 3, Batman:AA, and Sly 2 (I haven't played Sly 3 yet). I just think for the most part level design and mission quality turn into shit in open world/sandbox games. To me, the GTAs and Assassin's Creed's just have a big map and the developers have you go some place and kill some people and repeat (with some fetch quests and stuff thrown in) while the good open world/sandbox games feel like linear missions were constructed and then placed about to create a big world instead of creating the world first and hoping you get good missions out of it. I hope that makes sense as Mercenaries was the first really great sandbox game I ever played and then I could no longer find the Rockstar sandbox games fun because of how awesome Mercenaries was.

I really loved Sly 1's levels as every level was creative and unique. And, Sly 1 shared so many characteristics of great 2D platformers like enemies were one hit kills and you got a horseshoe (which allows you to get hit and not die) or extra life for collecting 100 coins. I loved going through each level and finding all the clue bottles and opening up the vault in each level as you usually got a new move for doing so, and I found the new moves to be better in Sly 1 than Sly 2. Sly 1 also has a lot more traps for Sly to get through than Sly 2. I've beat the first 3 bosses in Sly 2 and they have all been pretty disappointing because every boss so far is just beaten by basic combat by dodging one attack and then hitting the boss. Sly 1's bosses were all very different encounters and were usually pretty fun, nothing great (the last boss was pretty good though) but more interesting than Sly 2's lame boss battles. Sly 1 definitely has faults as the "minigame" levels were usually OK at best and there wasn't much story and dialogue going on compared to Sly 2.

Read the question. I've tackled most of the mainstream exclusives.

I have been hearing good things of folklore though.

2.
I've never heard someone echo my opinion so succinctly.
Mercs still stands in my favorite sandbox ventures along with the other titles you mentioned.

Mercs was such a special game. I just loved playing through all the missions and finding a way to not piss off all the factions, which was possible because I did it. There was just so many ways to do each mission, it was ridiculous, and that is really what sandbox games should aim for. I actually used stealth quite a bit in Mercs and it worked out quite well. The only thing where I time I think Mercs failed was the last mission, I could not find a way to do that last mission by getting to the last guy without getting a whole army after me; I actually used a health cheat to get the last guy alive because I got everyone else alive.

I'd add Infamous at the top of that list. the sequel is coming soon and the reason behind its awesomeness is probably because its made my Sucker Punch (the devs behind the Sly series). Here is a demo of Infamous 2 show at the Eurogamer Expo. It looks Uncharted 2 quality so far. Can't wait until 2011.

Mafia 2 is pretty good. It set a world record for most uses of the word fuck, so there's that.

Demon's Souls is the best game on the PS3 in my opinion.
I also really liked Heavy Rain.

I haven't played Infamous yet because I gotta say the demo didn't grab me. A friend has the game so I can borrow it and play it. There are quite a few games I just have yet to play or that I haven't finished, and Infamous is on that list but there are a few games above it. Plus, I got a stack of Fall games that I'm currently playing as well.

I also recommend checking out The Last Guardian, it's an upcoming game being developed by Team Ico and it looks very promising!

It still stands as my favorite game of all time. So that was never in doubt.
I am willing to give that dev team my hard earned money just for the beefed up graphics.
