I just downloaded Qriocity for the PS3, it's absolutely fantastic. I find the PS3 to be a much more versatile multimedia device, even discounting bluray. Now that most of MS exclusives are either tapped out or multiplatform, I don't see the big appeal.

That being said, in terms of gaming, there isn't much in it. There are plenty of really good games on both consoles, more than enough to keep most people happy.

Well, a console is only as good as its games, because thats really what youre buying the console for. Everything else is just an added bonus. So look into the PS3 catalogue, and if you find enough things that you want to play, buy a PS3.

The semi short answer for me is Blu-Ray, free multiplayer, rechargeable controllers are default, reliable as in i haven't replaced my PS3 for the many years that I have had it (no red ring). PS3 is just an all around solid built machine and the quality shows. None of that ring being scratched in the CD when any vibration moves the 360. (Me and a friend were playing gears on his 360 and his brother shut the door kinda hard and it etched a ring in gears CD making it unplayable).

I do dislike not being able to play some of the exclusives like gears but at the same time PS3 has some great exclusives like Killzone and MGS4. Honestly i do feel preference is a big part of which console will like better but for me not having to play monthly for multiplayer that honestly doesn't differ (in terms of actually playing the game) from Sony's free service (minus being hacked but that really is beyond there control for the most part).

It's got a crap load of exclusives. And most of them are good.
It has a decent lifespan.
PSN is free.
Bluray--because you'll never need to switch disks, and because it's a bluray player.

Ok, I'm 34, don't kid yourself ... games are fun.

I have both systems and as for PS3 benefits, it is easy. Blu-ray is your main benefit. Also, they aren't as big a bag of A3 holes as the M$ group when it comes to things third parties can do on their online system.
You're 34 and you still think the $ thing is clever?

OT: Speaking as someone who's had to replace both his original systems (360 RoD'd and New Vegas burnt my PS3 lens out) I'd say the only real difference I've seen in the consoles is that the 360 runs a bit smoother. It has a better home screen too, but the PS3 store is easier to navigate.

Since most of the games are multi-platform, there's not much difference here, although the Uncharted series is pretty good.

All in all, the only real difference with the PS3 is the Blu-Ray player and the free online. But you're up the creek if your PS3 breaks down like mine did and you're left with a stack of useless Blu-Rays.
No, I'm 34 and have probably been typing M$ longer than you've known what a computer is for and don't feel like breaking the habit; cool's got nothing to do with it.

OT: So, if the PS3 breaks down then you have a stack of useless disks unlike when your xBox RRODs, right?

I just bought it for the exclusives. Mainly MGS3 at first, but I prefer the PS3 exclusives in general. Just personal taste. Later I started to appreciate the free online as well. Not having to pay for something is always great.

Also, they aren't as big a bag of A3 holes as the M$ group when it comes to things third parties can do on their online system. Look at portal II if you are a fan; PC and PS3 players can compete and you'll get some benefits from steam to begin with. Free DLC? Ask Valve what happened when they wanted to do that for the XBox players vs the PS3 players. Yea, Sony got hacked but it won't be long till M$ suffers something similar and that you can count on. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Oh yea, and one other thing ... PS3 is wireless out of the box with a nice HDD ... good luck with that one on the XBox.

So, my recommendation is find out what you want, compare the two systems, and then go from there. Have fun.
Xbox: £160 (console with 250gb hdd and built in wireless)

PS3: £250 (console and 300gb hdd for silly instilation on every game and built in wireless)

Seriously I can't see the logic in your statement.

Rats, a proper reply would be a thread jack and that ain't cool. :( But, as an aside, flame wars don't start till you start acting like a jerk for no other reason than we disagree with you. Cheers!

What do you think of the online communities on both systems? I believe that the PS3 has a better flavor of people playing than xBox does and that makes all of the difference to me. I've not turned my xBox on since I beat Halo III some year or so ago and I still have three years left on my gold membership.
For the two consoles I could say the communities are the same and its a myth that their different excluding that they own different consoles.
It's depends on the game your playing more then anything on what type of communities you interact with, and you will find a plethora of different people on both consoles.
Jefe, what is a plethora?

Yea, guess I could just be getting lucky on the PS3 side but that seems to be a bit of a stretch to constantly get fewer idiots and cheaters on one side. But you never know. Although I will say there is a game out there where idiots are almost nonexistent .... too bad it's on the Wii. :)

Free online play is obviously the bigger plus compared to the 360. Not many people seem to have headsets, and this can be a plus or a minus depending on the game. The interface isn't as good as 360, though.

I tend to find the Playstation Store has better deals and prices than the Xbox Live marketplace, especially as prices can go down permanently in some cases.

PS3 exclusives I personally find much better than the Xbox ones, but that is purely my own opinion. All the HD games and PS1 classics are pretty sweet too.

On the downside, downloads are a big problem, especially as the sizes tend to be massive, and it seems almost every week there is either a firmware update or a massive game update, If you have a crazy internet download speed it's not a big problem, but if not it is painful, especially as you can't download them in the background.

Overall, it is a great console. Better online play and store, but clunkier interface and annoying constant updates, which aren't exactly a deal breaker.

Time to repeat what everyone has already said over and over;
Much more/better exclusives
Almost completely silent
Better interface on the menus(this is induvidual, but I prefer it)
Free online play
Blu-ray player!
Lots of re-releases of old games in HD quality and trophy support!

The only thing I think the 360 is superior with is the controller for when you play shooters. Shooting with the L2/R2 buttons feels really uncomfortable with the PS3 controller. Bought some stuff you could put on them to make it look more like 360 triggers, but they wouldn't stay on.
I own both and since I bought the PS3 I've hardly looked back on my 360. I have recently started to get intrested in it again however since I can play it in the livingroom on our huge TV(non HD, so PS3 there doesnt work)!

Calm down, you've only got a decade on me.

OT: The point I was making was that if the 360 breaks down, I'm left with useless 360 games; if the PS3 breaks down, I've not only lost my games but a valuable part of my home theater system. Therefore, it creates twice the threat.

PS3 has free to play online, which is always convienient. the controller is nice and small and feels comfortable in your hands, and the system doubles as a blu-ray player, this thing really does almost everything, the PS4 should have a built in coffee machine or something! now let's discuss exclusives:
Killzone is like a futuristic WWII. you play as Tom Sevchenko, Sgt. first class of the ISA (allies) and you fight the evil helghast (Nazis).
Uncharted is a third person shooter, and it has to be one of my personal favorite game franchaises. you play as Nate Drake, a mercenary who is looking for a lost city (el dorado in Uncharted 1, Shangri-la in uncharted 2, atlantis of the sands in uncharted 3).
Littlebigplanet 2 is a very cute game which puts you into the shoes of an anthromorphic voodoo doll named sackboy/sackgirl. your mission is to save littlebigplanet from the negativatron and his army of red meanies. the game also features a moonworld that neighbors littlebigplanet. it features several craters that can be changed into custom levels to share with the world.
Metal Gear is a very popular and famous game franchaise. you play as solid snake, and you have to stop your evil twin brother liquid ocelot.
Resistance 2 has a very fun co-op experience, my favorite class is the soldier. the other classes you can choose are spec-ops and medic, and they all have different special abilities and weaponry. in single-player you play as nathan hale, a soldier who has to stop the chimera invasion of earth. the chimera are a race of evil aliens who believe that they are the next step in human evolution. they use parasites to turn people into chimeras. and that about sum it up. people are hating on the PS3 for some reason. also, during the spring the terrorist group calling themselves anonymous hacked PSN and shut it down for months. it's nice to see somebody who doesn't say the PS3 is for Fagolas for once, i think you will enjoy the PS3 very much, cause i know i did.

Putting aside the games I find on top of having the Bluray player that the PS3 upscales videos and dvds so much better than the 360. My 360 rarely gets switched on now except when the rare exclusive I want to play turns up.

If I had to get rid of one I probably wouldn't miss having a 360.

Also, I'm in this border-less limbo of feeling like I'm too old for video games (I'm 26, been gaming since about age 9), and I don't know whether or not I want to invest $250 into another video game system. Can I get more out of it than just video games?
Maybe you're just not a gamer..anymore. I consider myself a "Hardcore" , i dont have to sit and think about whether i am going to continue my mass effect stroy from 1 and 2 on to the 3rd game, i don't need to see a review before i go out and buy Uncharted 3, its a no brainer. Gears 3 is an insta purchase, so is Dark Souls. You've sold a 360 (bang there go them exclusives, another bum move) to ask whether you should spend even more money on a system that for the most part has the same triple AAA titles , bar a couple of exclusives?

I think you're insane, 50 quid bule ray player, and keep the 360 would have been the smart option. Now you're out of pocket doubly and you're not even CERTAIN if you wanna game any more?

Dude..SRSLY?

Going thread crazy huh? Yeah I can't compare because I don't have a 360, but right now I can tell you sony is investing more in the hardcore gamer. While microsoft is interested in kinect games for kiddies. You might be interested in the wii U if your looking for a new console

Benefits? Ummm....
You can... Well, you used to be able to...
There?s... But you have to subscribe to Plus...
There?s an option to...but it always crashes.
You don?t have to pay for online and it has a BR player.
Really, I?ve had the ps3 for a few years now and the experience has been pretty...actually, it?s become very lackluster. Sure it hasn?t burst into flames like one of it?s competitors was doing for a while, but for all the expensive hardware in it, it?s only really good for playing games. And even for that (if the rrod issue is done) the 360 seems to be better. As time goes on, I?ve been playing on the PC more anyway.
The problem is that the PS3 gets the worst support. And I?m not even talking about the big hack, I?m just talking about how little it really does for the specs it has. Rather than hearing about new features, we always here more about why we can?t get new features or features that they?re taking away. And now it seems like the few new features they can be bothered to bring to the PS3 will require a subscription to Plus.

Same thing happened to me around that age: I had so many other things to do, I never even bothered getting a PS1 or N64. I still got a game occasionally, just for the PC or occasionally a cheap SNES/Genesis game. You got better things to spend your money on right now: like alcohol & sluts.

I AM CALM, DAG-NABIT! I'm just old and missed Carnival four years ago.

OT: Yea, but it is worth the risk if you think about it from a certain point of view. Cheap, dependable blu-ray player, $100. xBox 360, $200. Bout the same as a PS3. Yea, cheaper to replace by the part, but if you do the 3D thing like me I'm not sure a $100 blu-ray player will be allowed to (note I didn't use the word able) play 3D so I wouldn't get to enjoy my 3D movies. Still cheaper ala carte but the benefits are reduced making the gamble more worth while.
