When you go and insult people, they get offended. Gabe Newell has spoken harshly against the PS3 many times, but then at E3, he decided that enough was enough, and announced that not only Portal 2 would come to PS3, but Steam would as well. Well apparently, linking your PSN and Steam account after buying Portal 2 will give you Portal 2 on PS3 and PC. Two edition.

This makes sense when you think about it. Steam on both things, should be able to use the same things on both consoles. Of course, Steam probably won't take off as well on PS3 as it has the PC, but still, I am happy to get Cross Platform play, Cross chat, and two copies to the sequel of one of the funniest games of all time.

How odd. It was the promotional release of Portal being free last year that got me started with Steam in the first place, and now it looks like this news will convince me to finally pick up a PS3.

Me definitely likes.

Is this also for Steam on Mac? If anybody knows...
Link seems to say 'Yes' to that, and I'd be surprised if it's not since Steam is pretty easy on the PC/Mac cross play.

Wait. Does this mean that if I buy the PC version, I get a PS3 copy? Or does it only go one way? Because if it's one-way, then I know which one I'm buying!

Which is kinda weird, because I bought the PS3 version of the Orange Box, and then later the Orange Box for PC. Valve is intent on sucking all my money away.

I have a feeling most people who don't own a PS3 will be upset by this, but I think it's awesome! Maybe I'll finally be able to play games with my pc and ps3 friends!

...lucky them?
I don't really see how having 2 copies is advantageous at all.

My thoughts exactly. I don't believe I have ever bought a game more than once, even when I wanted to play it on another platform

I do, my gaming laptop broke, haven't been able to finish Portal since I didn't want to buy it again for 360. I did however rebuy Mirror's Edge since I liked it that much.

It's actually really sweet if you think about it - it shouldn't matter which system you buy a game for, since you've already paid the devs for their work.

BTW, it's Steamworks that is coming to PS3, not Steam.

I think the crossplatform play is the more interesting aspect of this.

Maybe i'm just not keeping up but last i heard Valve hated the PS3, and generaly went around dissing the console. What changed?

It's nitpicking, but Steamworks connects with Steam - that's the service that offers achievements, Cloud support, servers, and I assume (when it becomes available) the cross-platform play. So Steam is technically coming to PS3, just more as a vehicle for Steamworks as apposed to a game store.

I believe the instant messaging service will be available for PS3 users though.

We're not sure. We all thought the same thing, up until E3 this past year. Y'know, when Gabe Newell himself came out during the Sony press conference and announced that Portal 2 was coming to PS3.

I'm still not sure how to take that. Were they lying the whole time about hating the PS3? Did Sony give them truckloads of money to do it? Did Microsoft somehow piss Valve off? Was Gabe on crack at the time he made the decision?

Who knows? I, for one, don't really care. I'm super stoked for Portal 2 and will be getting it for PC regardless. But the whole Steamworks on PS3 is pretty awesome. Just sayin'.

It's an important distinction. People think that because Steam is coming to the PS3 (it isn't), that they can play games they purchased on Steam on their PS3. It doesn't work that way, although other devs using Steamworks might also get behind providing vouchers to those who buy the PS3 version of a game.

Valve openly disliked the PlayStation 3's cell processor, and didn't feel it was worth investing their development time. They let another company handle releasing the orange box for the PS3, which turn out horrible and they admitted it was a mistake.

On the other console, Valve has been having serious problems with Xbox Live. Microsoft won't let Valve make free releases. Valve hasn't made a retail release since Left 4 Dead 2, and they've released many things for the PC that were free. The Sacrifice DLC for L4D2 wasn't free for the Xbox because Microsoft apparently doesn't like that. They've also made free massive additions to Team Fortress 2, none of which have been released for the 360. Seemingly, Valve is less concerned profitting of their games, but more concerned about getting Steam on every system available. This is further evidenced by them doing some insanely low pricing, like for a brief period selling TF2 for $2 and just giving away portal to Mac users.

Last year they made a big event out of announcing Portal 2 for the PS3. They never said whether they had a change of heart about the PS3 architecture or Xbox Live is restrictive enough to be just as bad.

I have to admit to being tempted to buy the PS3 one for a friend so he can gift me the PC one, just because it's going to be awesome and it'll be a cheap way to get it for him.

"Oh, so you guys accidentally bought the wrong one? That's ok, we'll fix it for you. Just don't be so silly next time"

Just kidding, I'm hardly going to complain about this.
