PS3 worth buying for GTA V?

So I've been thinking recently: I want to play GTA V but don't have an xbox or ps3.

Here's a question for those that have played it:

Is GTA V good enough that it'd be worth buying a PS3 for it? (Well, I'd be buying it for GTA V, but would probably buy other games as well, such as last of us)

Also, does anyone know where about in the UK would be the best place to buy it? Or what HDD size I'd need at the least?

Given the massively long load times and horrible framerates GTA V gets on consoles, I'd say it isn't worth playing until it gets a PC or next gen port. I don't know why Rockstar decided to release the game solely on obsolete platforms that simply can't handle the game, but that's what they did. It certainly is not a bad game, but unless you play games on consoles exclusively, and are used to the crappy loading times and horrible framerates that have plagued console games for the last few years, you're not likely to have a good time. Can't speak for the other PS3 exclusives, but if you're only after one or two games, it might not be worth it to buy a console just to play those titles. I suppose it won't cost you too much now given how the PS3s are dirt cheap, but that's up to you.

Yes, it's worth to buy a PS3.

First because it will take until 2015 if not 2016 for the PS4 to be worth its price (Don't ever buy a console at launch. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rIJmGj4g-s]) Buying a PS3 -or 360- and taking advantage of the fact that these consoles' retail bins are going to stay well furnished for the next year or two to binge yourself with inexpensive used games

If you have a PC, wait for the PC version. It will come out sooner or later. The PS4/Xbone versions will hopefully be good as well, assuming they can resist the temptation throw in extra candy until the fps and load times are similar to the 360/PS3.

I have wondered if I should wait for the PC version, but that could be a long way away and I'm a bit impatient.

It's not that fantastic of a game. I know it gets a lot of hype and praise but beyond the traditional GTA openworld gameplay there isn't a lot that makes it stand out. I'd just wait for the PC version if I were you.

A few things before I start talking...

1. I own it on the 360
2. I LOVE the new "more serious" style that GTA has gone with (GTAIV was excellent in my book). This is something many disagree with
3. I am not done with it so maybe it turns into a turd sandwich. In fact, I'm not very far at all (I'm probably 10 hours or so in).

That out of the way, I would say that alone is not worth a PS3. If you plan on using it for a Blu-Ray player (which is why I got mine) or if there are enough other games you want (might I recommend "The Last of Us" and "Valkyria Chronicles"?; my "Game of Forever" and "Tactical RPG favorite" respectively), then it would be worth getting.

The initial load time sucks donkey. You're looking at over a minute wait for the game to load but once it has loaded, there is almost zero loading after that. Along with that, I have not had any problems with the frame rate.

I absolutely love the characters in the game (something many have disagreed with). All three characters are...well...pretty shitty people. Not like old school GTA people either where they have some redeeming qualities...they're just all kind of shitheads for one reason or another (Trevor especially but frankly, it's why I really like him). These guys are not anti-heroes; they are pretty much villains that you control and not everyone is comfortable with that.

So all in all, if you plan on using your PS3 for other functions, then yes, it's worth it (assuming it works as well as my 360 version).

It never actually occurred to me that I could use it as a blu-ray player as well.

I actually would like to play the last of us as well, as I've heard a lot of good stuff about it, but not enough to know what it's properly about other than an apocalypse situation where you're surviving with a young girl named Ellie.

Are blu-rays really that much better than DvDs?

Edit: At the minute I'm aiming to see if I can find any good deals on used PS3s at a Game store at the Trafford centre. I went earlier tonight, but got there just as they were closing.

BluRays do offer improved picture quality, but only if you have an HD TV, preferably one capable of 1080p. On a 1080p screen they do look a lot better than DVDs, even with upscaling. If your TV is only 720p there will be less of a difference.

GTA 5 probably isn't a system seller but its worth getting a PS3 anyway. The 12GB hard drive is too small and the next size is 120GB. I got it for £120 on eBay but if you play the game of eBay well enough and for long enough you could get one for £90, maybe even £80.

It seems the universe doesn't want me to play GTA 5 cos it doesn't work on both consoles. I dunno if the rental company just sent a bad disk on both consoles or if the game is total buggy piece of shit. From the 2 hours ish I played before the 360 version fucked up it seemed pretty good but I was already getting a small taste of the main criticism everyone had of it - the old drive to a place to kill a guy and drive back mission style can be kinda boring these days.

No, I wouldn't say GTAV justifies the purchase of a PS3...the great backlog of PS3 games would justify the purchase in my opinion. I really didn't like GTAV to be honest. Tutorials abound, ludo-narrative dissonance, unlikeable characters, a plot that's taking itself really seriously and, the overarching mentality that I'm being punished for using cheat codes. This game wasn't fun for me but I've had this kind of problem with Rockstar games since about San Andreas and probably earlier given I couldn't get back into GTAIII or San Andreas. As for the Ludo-narrative dissonance: what I'm specifically referring to is how it requires Franklin to go through flight school...by the time I got that message I went through those tutorials with...Micheal(?) and absolutely didn't want to go through another Tutorial for the umpteenth time...I also feel like GTAV is still more restrictive than San Andreas, which allowed character customization and had a lot more stores and restaurants the player could go into and shop in.

Buy a PS3 but make sure you grab more games than GTAV. Dishonored is a budget title now for example. Far Cry 3 is bundled with 2 and Blood Dragon for under $50. Then there are the exclusives bundles like God of War's 5-game collection or the inFamous double-feature.

It seems like people's opinions are mixed on whether GTA V is a good game or not, which is interesting due to all the good stuff I've seen about it.
GTA V would be my biggest motivator to buy a PS3, but wouldn't be the only thing I'd use it for, of course.

1 thing that'd put me off it is if there aren't many people playing online for PS3 anymore.

I would say that it wouldn't be worth buying an entire console for the game. Get the PS3 for the exclusives (such as TLoU as you've already stated) with things like GTA V coming second. I found it to be quite the disappointment which might explain my answer, but I think it works in principal.

It's worth it to buy a PS3, but GTA5 really pushed the limits of what that console can do, as such, the performance isn't exactly top notch. If they ever get around to making a PC port it might be better (though they don't have the best record when it comes to PC ports). If you absolutely need to play it soon, PS3 is probably the best bet.

If you do get a PS3, I'd suggest not buying Last of Us and just watching it on YouTube. The characters are really well done (especially Ellie, who is probably the best female character I've ever seen in a video game) and the lore is interesting enough to make it stand out from other zombie stories (despite them using just about every single zombie survival story cliche known to human kind), but the controls and game play leave much to be desired. Definitely works better as a movie than a game

It depends of if you plan on taking full advantage of GTAOnline. I liked GTAV more than GTA4 but it is kind of short...for a GTA game that is. Well worth the price still but maybe not if that price includes a new ps3.
I'm not much of an online player (I prefer local multiplayer on a console) but I've been having a lot of fun in GTAO. It's got a good mix of the usual online matches as well as missions and a bunch of ambient stuff going on in the open world; like you expect from a regular GTA game. They also recently released the mission creator tool. You can only make different kinds of Deathmatches and Races for now but that's enough. I've been having a lot of fun making my own (it's streamlined even better than Little Big Planet; it wont take hours to make one job) and playing the weird stuff others have made. The great thing is that with such a huge and interesting open world that resembles such a fabled place, there are plenty of spaces and themes to inspire some really fun creations. I'm currently working on a series of Tom Waits themed jobs; just putting the finishing touches on Heartattack & Vine.

The online part of the game is what is making me want it so much. It does look awesome.

That's a shame to hear.

I think at the minute I am leaning towards getting a PS3. I think it'd even get me buying blu rays as well.

Getting one just for GTA V, not sure I guess it depends on how much disposable cash you have. As others have stated though its an adequate BD player and streaming box too (Netflix, BBC i player etc), there are a number of other decent games to play. Most of them are dirt cheap now as well, you can get the Killzone or Resistance trilogy sets for £20 or less.

Where to get one? Check Amazon, if Amazon themselves dont have the best price one of the market place traders will. If you have a decent sized 2.5" HDD (250GB minimum) laying around in your PC parts save some money and get the 12GB PS3 with no hard drive, buy the cheap bracket to mount it and away you go.

The 12GB PS3 costs about £125-150 and the one with the 500GB HDD is around £175-200, for someone serious about gaming a lot with their PS3 I would recommend the 12GB anyway. Buy the one without a HDD and fit your own 1TB drive and it wont cost much more than the 500GB version Sony offer, if you get PS+ you get to play loads of games for free and the PSN store seems expensive most the time but they do have good deals if you have PS+.

I got my PS3 late last gen and only around 18 months before the current gen launch and I more than got my moneys worth from it, saved a whole heap of cash compared to getting one earlier and each game as it came out. I wouldn't be surprised if I have paid less for the PS3 and the games I really wanted to play for less than the price of just PS3 console if I had been an early adopter.

So yes it is worth it if there are couple of other games you want to play and you need a streaming box and BD player.

Regardless of whether it's a good game or not, I wouldn't buy a console just to play ONE game. I bought a PS3 because there're dozens of games I want to play.
