Reasons to buy a PS3: God of War series, Shadow of The Colossus/Ico HD, The Last of Us, Heavy Rain and Infamous 1&2.
NOT a reason to buy a PS3 Grand Theft Auto V (Sorry, Rock Star, in my opinion, hasn't made a good game since Vice City.

Are load times and frame rates really that bad?
No, that's just PC Elitism talking. While it does take a fair bit of a while (Usually anywhere between thirty to seventy seconds) to load the game, once you're in there are no loading screens. As for the framerate, I've got it on 30 and never had an issue with it. There are enough great exclusives on the PS3 to get it over the 360 (It's also a free Blu-Ray player!). And a lot of the exclusives the 360 had ended up being on other platforms (Mass Effect, Alan Wake, Limbo, Gears of War (Although not the sequels)

The only downside I've ever had with the PS3 is the controller. Sony haven't changed it since the Dual Shock in PS1 days. And it feels....small. But the PS4 controller is amazing.

Honestly? I'd say get a PS3 for the PS3 exclusives (And then get a 360 as well for the same reason, since both are gonna be cheap as fuck in the coming year, especially second hand), and wait a bit longer until the game comes to either current gen consoles, or PC. And seeing as how every GTA game has come to PC within six months of initial console release, I'm genuinely surprised that it's not out, let alone even announced.

I think at the minute I am leaning towards getting a PS3. I think it'd even get me buying blu rays as well.
I can't go back to DVDs after Blu-rays. Before I had an HD tv with a PS3 I thought Blue-ray and DVD looked pretty much the same. Now when I go back and watch DVDs on it I'm just like, "Holy balls this looks like crap!"

I don't understand why people like RockStar games, the controls are just horrible in all of their games from GTA to RDR to Max Payne. I just picked up RDR on sale for $7.50 and it's an alright game so far, I'm still early so it feels like every mission I'm doing is just a tutorial right now. One thing I can say is that the controls just suck; you have to constantly tap a button to sprint, the horses control so horribly (Shadow of the Colossus was 100x better in that regard), etc. Plus, they don't know how to make an open world game because all they do is have linear missions in an open world game, which is the opposite of what you are supposed to do. Lastly, Dan Houser is probably the biggest hack of a writer in the video game medium and the worst part is he actually thinks he's a good writer due to all the praise his games get.

I totally agree as the last RockStar game I've liked is either Vice City or Midnight Club 2, whichever came out last.

So I think the consensus here is: A PS3 is worth buying, but not just for GTA V. Other PS3 exclusives are worth buying it for.

Guess I'll just have to see how much I can get one for and base it off that then.

As a side note for OP: blue ray is kinda outdated when you have Hulu and Netflicks. physical media in general is on its way out. As I said before, digital just can't be beat.
The down-side to stuff like Netlix is that not everything is added to it, certainly not straight away.

Like for instance, Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Netflix doesn't have all of them (UK Netflix anyway, haven't checked US Netflix).

I wouldn't be using it for Netflix anyway. If I buy a PS3, it'll be connected to my 24" PC monitor that I bought last week, which is capable of running 1080p and taking a HDMI input.

Graphics aren't a massive issue to me to be honest, so it doesn't matter to me that they aren't all in 1080p.

When buying a previous gen system, you aren't buying it because you care about being up to date with technology, you are buying it because there are games on it that are interesting and can be played.

One thing I am curious about is how much play time can you get out of it?

Saying someone was bored of it after a week doesn't mean much, because they could have been playing 4+ hours per day, meaning they got bored of it after 20 hours of game play, which isn't that bad.

During the week I'd only get a few hours or so a night to play it, and even then wouldn't spend my entire evening gaming, so it could last me quite a bit longer.

I've ultimately decided not to bother buying one for now.

I can afford it, but looking at the price of a used console in Game and the cost of a single game put me off completely.

Besides, I'm having fun on Loadout at the minute, and bought a simulator bundle on bundle stars.

GTA V can wait. PC version will probably be much better anyway.

elitism:
The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.

If you don't like 720p and 30fps, outdated standards that are now officially dinosaurs, its elitism?

Even loading times? When anyone can have fast loading times thanks to cheap SSDs?

Really? Stop crying elitism when someone doesn't want to stick to 2005 technology in 2014.

Do we call anyone who owns a 1080P TV elitist? Or anyone who has a smart phone? Both outpaced what the 7th generation consoles can do. They are the reason the Ps4 and xbone exist. Its not elitism anymore.

Its not favored treatment if its standard and common.

As a side note for OP: blue ray is kinda outdated when you have Hulu and Netflicks. physical media in general is on its way out. As I said before, digital just can't be beat.
Having a high end computer and HD TV's doesn't make someone elitist, but telling others that last gens consoles are shit and not to touch them just because their not top end hardware with the highest stats is being elitist. Best hardware doesn't make a good game, or a good console, and for those with less money a PS3/360 are a good option.

Also no Bluray are not outdated, Hulu and Netflicks can get stuffed, I prefer to own my movies as physical items rather than rely on streaming them from a service that can disappear at some point. Their nice options for those such as yourself to enjoy, but their not superior nor do they replace physical. God help us if they ever do, publishers having total control to just take away/turn off last years movie/games to make you buy the newest is not a future I'd like to see.

Don't get me wrong I like steam, but since the games I buy on them have no value I pay accordingly ($10-20 max).

The thing is, the game only loads once. At the beginning. It does take about three minutes every time you boot it up, but it takes five seconds or less to reload every time you die.

Yes, you should pick up a PS3, because if you want GTA V you might also want to check out inFamous 1/2. I'm pretty sure I have a 250GB which works fine.

I haven't seen any terrible frame rate problems. I could just be one of those lucky people, more often than not, a large portion of people will have a problem with the game, and a few running it on the same hardware will be fine. The only time I noticed a frame drop is when I blow up 5+ vehicles in a grouping, and it doesn't last long and doesn't drop too low.

For the price that he would end up paying for one game, yes it would be awful to buy right now. The generation just started and its hard to get a hold of the PS4. The transition has not been completed, people still hold onto the last gen because of slow adoption. The people that do want to sell will try to charge as high as possible to get a PS4.

Which I was right, the price was too high and the game price was too high. He'd be paying premium for old games that would be bargain bin price very soon.

Since rumors of GTA V on PC and next gen has been around since launch, buying a last gen console for a single game right now is the worst possible idea. Patience is a virtue. Which has been said time and time again. He doesn't seem really that interested in anything else but TLOU and buying a console at premium for 2 games is not a good idea either. He's best bet is waiting until it drops down to retro gaming price like the PS2 did and grab everything for a pittance.

Even the price point is still debatable. Which has been proven since the price scared him away. Not exactly convincing that its "poor man's gaming" when he ran from the price and bought what amounts to a humble bundle and playing a free to play. Its been obvious that the price for console gaming is high and its best to get the console when its retro when no one wants it anymore. Its retro, but people still cling onto it. So naturally the price will be high.

and lastly, best hardware is incredibly rare and unnecessary. You will never have a use for a 780 TI. You will never have a use for quad titans. You will never use that I7. There is a bar where any more power is functionally useless for a long tract of time, and that bar is pretty low because how much we progressed now. What you are dealing with is entry and mid range hardware which has been around for a while. We don't need high end because the regular stuff does whatever we want and more.

If there was ever an example, you are not racing against a lambo or Bentley. You are racing against a 1972 Ford Pinto. The "best hardware" is a gigantic myth that only exists in very small circles. According to steam, very high end makes up less than 1%. The only thing that matters is that its competitive with everything else, which these consoles aren't anymore. Even mobile phones have the power of these consoles. There is a reason we have the Ps4 now.

He already missed the console train for 7 years, it won't hurt to wait some more. It ain't going anywhere because very soon people will be trying to get rid of the things like they did with the ps2.

It isn't elitist to wait on something that is already on its way out. Its elitist to say "anything beyond _____'s level is elitist." It determines an absolute regardless of time past.

Which means anyone who buys a ps4 over an xbone is an elitist. Which is not true.
The price point was in reference to getting a PS3/360 for gaming (not just 1 game), they now have games much cheaper than the PS4/XBO. For example a PS4/XBO game is $79-89 for a new game (and more if you go special/collectors editions) and that's it, but a new PS3 game is $49-69 for a new release and has alot of games in the $20 or less department due to it's massive library of older games you can pick up cheaper (these are all Australian prices from JB Hifi).
I was saying in general not this specific case.

I played the opening of GTAV and the first mission in the city proper. Stopped playing because a mate asked me for a pint and I've never been back to it.

Certainly not a bad game from my brief time with it but there is no pull there to make me want to go back.

Unless you are a HUGE Grand Theft Auto fan, I'd leave it.

Ive played it both on 360 and ps3 and personally i felt the 360 controlled better than the PS3 did ( played on the ps3 first)

Some movements and controls just seemed smoother.

If your going to get a Ps3 get one for The Last of Us not GTAV

the PS3 is worth buying for more than GTA V, it's worth buying for all the great exclusives and for all of the great Japanese games. there is also PS+, which is great.
