Oh come on ... "selling out" means nothing, seeing as it's based entirely on the market expectations of a STORE.
It could simply mean that Amazon expected the PS4 to sell poorly, and only made a handful of units available for preorder, that's all.

Unless there's real numbers, news like this isn't just meaningless, it's misleading.
It's hardly misleading. It was reported that preorders were selling out fast, which they did. I'm not sure what angle people could take to mislead.

And it wasn't just Amazon. [http://www.dualshockers.com/2013/10/04/the-ps4-sells-out-faster-than-hotcakes-at-all-major-japanese-retailers-in-most-cases-within-minutes/]
Wtf.
Ok, let me explain it to you nice and slowly.

Let's say you make this statement: I ate all my apples within 10 minutes!
How many apples did you eat?

Without a numerical value, that statement means nothing. At all.

On the subject of PS4s, "selling out" means something completely different if they're supplying 500,000 units, vs 5,000,000 units.
Oh hey, in some places, the Xbox One also sold out of preorders. Does that mean they're equally popular?
If you don't know how many units are actually being sold, drawing any sort of conclusion whatsoever is outright stupid.

Harsh.

There are numbers though. People have been throwing around numbers like 1.5 million [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128487-Pachter-PS4-Pre-Orders-Top-1-5-Million], and while that might not be confirmed Sony itself said that preorder numbers were over a million [http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2013/08/gamescom_2013_unbelievably_ps4_pre_orders_are_ahead_of_the_ps2_and_ps3] back at Gamescom. Sure, we don't know the exact number of sales coming out of Japan, but you can't seriously say selling out there (and everywhere else) isn't significant.

Also, no the Xbox One isn't as popular [http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/games/1301761/gamestop-ps4-pre-orders-double-those-of-xbox-one].

Is it really such a big surprise, though? The Xbone was never going to work well over there (I don't think any Xbox has) so they had to go with the PS4. Still, it should convince some developers to make more stuff for it, and hopefully Sony will have learnt from their mistakes with the PS3.
What mistakes? Not a challenge, I genuinely would like to hear these out.

Biggest one would be how expensive the PS3 was at launch, then all the fiddling they did with the hardware because, if I remember correctly, the first gen had horrible heating problems and the PSN debacle, from the top of my head.

PS3 was good later in it's life, but they had several Xbone type marketing blunders leading up to their release, not to mention the long game drought after launch. A lot of people were really mad that they felt like they had purchased a $600 paperweight.

wikipedia gives total 360 sales in Japan as...1.5 million

I know, their first two systems sold terribly in Japan. I am curious to hear about how many Xbones were preordered though. Despite how much it has been decried since E3, the Xbone has more preorders than the 360 did. PS4 is still spanking it by a large margin, but maybe this just speaks to an overall growth in the games market...

The 'bone isn't set to launch in Japan any time soon. Microsoft ceded the market to Sony.

I thought they were doing some kind of second wave thing like Sony is doing? I know they labeled it as a "second tier" market, but I assumed they would see the system either this coming spring or next holiday season.

I really wouldn't know about any of this since I bought the Super Slim very late into the generation. My only gripe is that the Super Slim apparently doesn't run certain "special editions" of certain games, and no one will warn you about it until it's too late.

Hmm, would you happen to know which games don't work? I got a super slim less than a year ago, but I haven't run into that problem yet.

So far my only problem has been with the Ultimate Rapture Edition of BioShock (the one that brings Bio1 and Bio2 in the same disk). Super Slim apparently won't install it (I say apparently because mine won't, and a lot of people online are having the same issue with the same disk and the same PS3 model) due to error 8001002B, AKA "dirty disk". I've tried EVERYTHING from rebooting the system and erasing corrupt data to cleaning the disk to installing/playing every other game I own. It just doesn't work. Now I'd love to think it's just an issue with this one disk but I wouldn't risk it a second time.

Just because we don't know how many apples you just ate, doesn't mean it's misleading to report that you just ate all your apples when you did, in fact, just eat all your apples. When it comes to big business like this, it's generally assumed that fairly large orders are made. Amazon are one of the biggest retailers in the world, the PS4 is one of the two biggest games consoles in the world right now. It's not a huge leap to figure there might be a pretty fucking hefty amount of PS4's shifted around by amazon, so them ALL being sold out is something notable.

Look at it this way, amazon don't want to sell out because they want to keep selling, more profit that way. If AMAZON, giant that they are, sold out within minutes that means either Amazon completely fucked up in their purchasing and underestimated the PS4's popularity, or, as is more often the case with incredibly popular stuff, demand is just so high for it that supply just can't keep up. Either way it bodes well for the PS4.

It was really Sony's attitude at the time.

The PS1 was a great succes, the PS2 was a massive succes, so by the time the PS3 rolled around Sony acted like king of the mountain. With Sony saying that people would buy the PS3 even if it didn't have any games, and Ken Katuragi insisting that the Playstation 3 print on the console be done in Spider-Man font. They were going a bit cuckoo with power.

The humility they showed when they unveiled the PS4 compared to how they were with the PS3, seems to suggest they learned from these mistakes.

Don't forget they said that if someone couldn't afford a PS3, that they should work more hours to afford it when they were asked about the price. It reminds me a lot of Mattricks "We have a device for people without internet, it's called the 360" comment.

I think Mattrick also said something along the lines of "People who want backwards compatability are backwards." He said so much baffling shit, it's hard to keep track of it all.

You'd think Microsoft would've wanted to avoid the PS3 reveal shenanigans at all cost, and then they go and crash the plane right into the mountain.

It's interesting to note that both launches also had Phil Harrison in common. Maybe he is just toxic to have on your team at this point.
