The HDD is designed to be replaceable, like the PS3. Or unlike the Xbone, if you prefer. You can't pop the hood and mess around with most parts, but the HDD is meant to be upradeable.
Exactly. Not only does it NOT void the warranty, Sony gives you instructions on their web site on how to do it, and load the OS so the thing will run. Just he same as the PS3. It was one of the first things I did to my PS3, because I could, and I wanted more than just the default 60GB space (at the time I bought it). I actually use the old 60GB HD as removable storage for my PC using a USB enclosure.

Remote control works, but it's the kind of thing I don't see myself using... Anyway, I played through Killzone: Shadow Fall twice, wonderful launch game, bought Battlefield 4 and deleted it because the campaign makes me angry, downloaded Don't Starve and also deleted it (nice game, but it's not my genre), finished Contrast and loved it, and now I'm playing Tomb Raider Definitive Edition and am playing Outlast for a while, though I don't plan to keep much longer with Outlast, it's too fucking creepy for my standards... the stuff I REALLY want hasn't been released yet... (Watch Dogs, InFamous: Second Son, The Witcher 3, MGS: Ground Zeroes)
Setting up remote play at this time. Fingers crossed!

My kids use it for Netflix, I've been playing Resogun and fiddling with AC4 here and there. Really, I'm waiting on reviews for Thief and the release of inFamous to dig in.

Also, remote play is pretty solid, though it can get a bit laggy at times. Not deal breaking lag, but enough to cause some of frustration in a twitch reflexes title.
Hope mine works good. I'll have the kids use the PS3 that still sits next to the PS4 for Netflix. Might reduce wear and tear.

I'm currently playing through the Killzone storyline. It's actually been really impressive so far.

I've been playing the free outlast, quite a good horror game and for free? Yes. Though I did not care for "Don't Starve" and the Resogun game was fun but didn't occupy my time for more than 20 minutes at at most. I'm currently much more interested in the ps3 PS+ free games (like Metro 2033 Last light which I downloaded a couple nights ago).

My wife and I have been playing COD Ghosts on it. That has been a lot of fun. Very impressive multiplayer environments.

Other than that, we use it most often in the same way I used my ps3. Netflix, Huluplus and DVD/Bluray player.
I didn't get Don't Starve! Maybe I had to sign up in time and did not? Outlast is downloading now.

I got to see a Killzone clip on a good screen at Bestbuy. I will be getting this. Incredible looling.

I think I'm looking most forward to Destiny after that. An exclussive?

I put a 1TB hdd in the night I brought it home. I beleve it was just the 5400, no clue about the 7200, but the one I have seems to work just fine. Also it literally took me 5 min to swap them out, super simple.

I've played quite a few games on it. I beat Killzone Shadow Fall, Lego Marval, Resogun & Contrast all pretty fun games. I've also played a ton of Dont Starve, that game is super addicting. I've also put about 15 hours into AC4, and still have a lot more to do in that game. There are a few others, DC Universe Online, Flower, Sound Shapes, Warframe, Doki Doki Universe & Blacklight that I've downloaded but haven't really had a chance to play. Finally, I started playing Outlast last night, and man oh man is that one freaky game. I am really enjoying it so far, and plan to play more. PS+ really makes any of the Sony systems worth owning. The four free games they've given away on the PS4 have all been really good.

I've also messed with the remote play quite a bit. It's a really cool feature, but I think it works better for some titles over others. Like Resogun was a little to fast paced, and the minimal lag I experienced was a bit frustrating, but AC4 is fantastic, and the majority of the 15 hours I've spent with that game, has been played over remote play.
Did you have to format the hard drive before using it or did you just pop the new hard drive in and the PS4 formatted it for you?

Don't Starve left the IGC 2 days ago and was replaced with Outlast. :/

I've had the console for a week. Killzone was brilliant, if not quite what I expected from a Killzone game, Don't Starve and Resogun were a fun distraction for a while, and I've still to get round to playing Blacklight, Outlast or DC Universe although I've installed them all. I've started Tomb Raider as well, and have also squeezed a bunch of time on Battlefield 4 in there. I did take a couple of weeks off work in order to play the shit out of my new toy though!

I'm not even saving up for one yet, partly because I'd rather buy a 3DS first and I'm also waiting for more games to be released on the system. At the moment there's nothing exclusive to the PS4 out that I'm interested enough in playing to shell out $400 plus the games themselves (and then I'll be needing to renew my PS+ subscription in April). I am holding off on some multi-plat titles until I get a PS4 (Assassin's Creed IV, for example, and the same will be true for Watch_Dogs and Child of Light). The inevitable "slim" version of the console with more hard drive space makes waiting seem like a wiser decision as well. However, if Final Fantasy XV were to actually get released, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

My opinion on the next generation of consoles has been something of a rollercoaster, but it'll still be pretty exciting I'd imagine. Despite my initial disdain for the design of the controller for instance, it's actually proven to be very comfortable.

Rats. At least I see it around alot on Steam. I can get it eventually.

So, the 1 game is available at a time? I'll have to look on Sony's site: what else do I get for being on PSN + ?

Last night, I paired my Vita and tried AC4 on it.

It is very pretty, but the proportions appear to be identical to PS4s. By that I mean, on a 55" screen, things that can be read by these old eyes aren't legible on a 5" screen. To play, I better already know what I'm doing. Other than that, this thing is terrific. I will be able to play while the wife watches what she likes.

The kids are already on me about getting a PS4 for the upstairs. I'm sure it will happen soon.

I will be taking some time off as well. Hopefully, not too many chores to keep me from taking full advantage of the time to play this. I have to get Killzone ASAP. I can believe it the prettiest console out there. DC Universe scares me. A Free to play MMORPG? Doesn't it do multi gig update everytime you start it?

Played Battlefield 4 and Tomb Raider on PC already. They are great games though, particularly Tomb Raider. Huge improvement. I got all of the Tomb Raider titles, including 1-5 in a Steam sale and sadly, they aren't worth playing at all!

A best buddy of mine laughed at me and said I was like him: I could come up with a dozen reasons not to do something, and then do it anyway. It is that way with PS4. I can tell you why you should wait. Mostly, the PS3 is so far from played out. Then I got a PS4 anyway. This thing is a pleasure. I don't own a yacht or a Harley or a snow mobile or go on golfing vacations in Florida. Gaming is my thing, and as things go, this is pretty cheap. It's a frivolous pleasure, and I'm enjoying it.

Nope, I just stuck it in, you will need to download the firmware to a usb stick and then install it from there. There is a certain way to format the stick for the update to work, but other than that it was pretty simple.

Interesting, I thought that the instant game category simply kept the last twelve months of games, regardless. Is resogun still available? I still see them all there but I had PS+ from a year ago (the PS3 and Vita games made it well worth it the moment I ran into a couple of games I was going to buy anyways).

I got to see a Killzone clip on a good screen at Bestbuy. I will be getting this. Incredible looling.
It looks really good. Truly beautiful scenery. There's a few things here and there that remind us that this isn't as good as it can get but it's a significant step forward. Regarding the problems, I'm namely referring to an issue the game has with collision detection. You'll the occasional object phase through the floor or a door at times. It's not all the time but noticeable when something like an insulin shot phases beneath the floor and just out of reach. But sometimes views of the city and other environments is simply draw dropping. If this is only the start of this generation then this is a VERY exciting place to start.

I think I'm looking most forward to Destiny after that. An exclussive?
Destiny looks pretty darn good. I'm still interested in learning just how "MMO" it is. As for exclussives, I'm looking most forward to inFamous. I loved the first two (particularly the second one). It's one of the few times I can easily admit that the sequel was better. Uncharted 2 was also better than 1 so I'm excited about whatever the followup is.

The Order 1886 is right up my alley. Steampunk+Van Helsing-esque? I'm in. It's currently set for Q3 of this year.

Knack looked terrible. But I'm excited about the prospect of what Media Molecule may be working on for the PS4 since Knack failed so miserably to cater to that family friendly need that sometimes pops up. There's also several Sony and Console exclusives that look great (Sony being on ps3 and ps4, Console being only on PS4 but available on PC). I'm particularly interested in Transistor when it comes out. I hear they make good use of the controller light.

I'm still somewhat hopeful for The Last Guardian. I could easily see that the Last Guardian has been revamped for a PS4 release instead of a PS3 release, but the only information we have was last year when they promised it was still being developed on. We'll see, it has been long enough.

See, I don't doubt I'm going to have to go back to my PS3 on occasion. I didn't play Infamous 2, and you write it is even better than 1. I'll get to it. I bet Gamestop has it cheap.

Infamous 3 is definitely on my radar. March 21, 2014. I can't wait! I think a couple of titles release at the end of February too.

I'll have to check for Resogun. From what I could tell, only Outlast was there, and I downloaded it.

EDIT:

Long story short, on my PS3, for some reason, if I try to rent/watch a movie, it tells me it's going to take hours to download. Last night, I let my daughter rent a movie. Two clicks and and were watching in Hi Def. Very pleasing.

Just read this from the PNS+ website:

Membership Includes:
Access to free hit games, with new free games added every month
Online Multiplayer on the PS4? system
Exclusive discounts of up to 75% on the PlayStation®Store
Up to 3GB of online game save storage
One membership works across PS4?, PS3? and PS Vita systems

So, Outlast is likely all I'll get for the PS4 till next month.

Assassin's Creed 4 though, is turning out to be fantastic. Much better than AC3. I jumped right into the game.

Yes, inFamous 2 was definitely better in a lot of ways. Your moral status makes a big difference too. I don't know if I'd play the full game a second time but definitely reload your last save just before the end-game and get yourself to the other moral side to see the other ending (or just youtube it like I did with bioshock 1 and 2). Part of my frustration with inFamous 1 was that none of my choices mattered. This is an extremely polished sequel.

I'll have to check for Resogun. From what I could tell, only Outlast was there, and I downloaded it.
I checked the PS+ list for Don't Starve and it isn't there anymore but Resogun is.

Long story short, on my PS3, for some reason, if I try to rent/watch a movie, it tells me it's going to take hours to download. Last night, I let my daughter rent a movie. Two clicks and and were watching in Hi Def. Very pleasing.
Yes, they appear to have been putting the PS+ money directly into their network. All downloads have been going a LOT faster lately. I downloaded a 5gb game and it took less than an hour. That may not sound particularly good but before 100MBs could take hours. I remember an update that was around that which actually ruined a party night we had planned. We had to go bowling and let me tell you, to us, bowling is the very last option for when you don't have anything better to do.

So, Outlast is likely all I'll get for the PS4 till next month.

Well, back when I got my PS+ subscription over a year ago, I got every PS+ exclusive for the previous 12 months. Basically, every month the game that was released in that month of the previous year gets cycled out.

http://us.playstation.com/playstation-plus/

It says resogun is still there. I don't know why Don't Starve disappeared. But looking at articles on the instant game, I'm reminded that Contrast was on it too and was removed on Jan 7th. So there's something new going on with the Instant game collection that wasn't on the ps3 one. I haven't figured out what they're doing but it looks like every other game is temporary. This may just be new console blues where all the PS4 titles are still full price so we won't really get ps4 games like the most likely "Knack" *shudder* until a few months. But man, the PS3 games are amazing right now. I can't wait to start Metro Last night.

I tried Metro Last Light. I have it for PC using a HD 7970 and, while it looks nice but as if we were watching it with vaseline over the screen, thats still darn good considering you can get a PS3 for about $250 and my video card cost me $550 a few years ago.

I look forward to seeing releases that really push the envelope of what a PS4 can do.

Is FF-XV out? No? Then I haven't bought one yet. Getting Watchdogs for the WiiU. Shooters actively discourage me from buying consoles so I'm waiting for more RPG's to be released, and since Persona 5 is on the PS3, I'm going to be waiting a few years.

Yeah, it was still there as of last night while the other two indie games were gone.

That's rough, I got a 7970 in December for $94 on a Best Buy clearance shelf. I got a 7950 too for a friend for $76.

It's moreso just that I wanted to play this game and here it is, free with a subscription that I've already gotten a bunch of other free games from.

I look forward to seeing releases that really push the envelope of what a PS4 can do.
Yeah, but don't hold your breath. It took around 4 years to get there on the PS3. Though, I'm sure some of that time was due to the PS3 being specifically difficult to develop for whereas this is an x86 machine so unlocking its potential should be a lot more viable as the engines get produced.

So, the mere presence of shooters on a console makes you so unhappy that you are discouraged from buying the console? I could understand the absence of games you like disuading you but not the presence of games you dislike. It does you no harm for them to exist so that's a strange statement. Perhaps you can clarify? As things stand, it sounds like other people being happy makes you unhappy and that can't be what you meant. Hopefully.

I suppose this could also have something to do with you already owning a WiiU, but I'll wait on your response before jumping to any more conclusions. For me, the WiiU's almost complete loss of third party support makes it an absolute "no" on my list. But I'm happy that it has some non-shooters for you.

Cool! I'll look for it again tonight. It looks very cool.

WOW! I'd pick it up for that too! I don't begrudge you getting a great deal. It's still in the $300 range at New Egg last time I looked. 1 thing I've learned, Electronics is never a hurry. Things come down in price over time.

I got a 7950 too for a friend for $76.
That's pretty good too! I'll have to look around Best Buy for this kind of thing! Maybe they don't know what they're doing? Good for consumers! About the best deal of seen is $95 for an HD 7770.

Confession: My oldest video card is in a pretty good build. I7-930 16 Gig 1600 RAM... GTS 250. Scary thing. The GTS 250 had the widest bus at the time. To this day, it is doing just fine. Most PC games DX 10, medium settings. Looks nicer than an Xbox. I may have to sabotage it as an excuse to the missus to let me swap it for something newer. At this time, that PC sits in our informal living room, where see send kids during dinner parties. They don't complain (I have 360 controller hooked up to that PC).

It took around 4 years to get there on the PS3.
I think they will at least hit their stride by around 2015. Really, really push the envelope, as Last of Us did for PS3? That does usually come toward the end of a generation.

Why would you upgrade a console? Every good, highly rated, well made application or piece of software will already be optimized to properly run on the system without too much issue. There's no reason to do it! You'll just add compatibility issues to your system down the road.

I assume it's people who mostly want to go download only, but the PS4 allows you to start playing downloadable games after about 40 seconds, so I see no issue with deleting games if you fill up the 500GB

There's also several free to play titles if you care at all about those things. I don't.

Oops! 7870 Ghost, not 7970. Sorry, big price difference. Still though, I regret having not purchased the second one to crossfire them. The one for the friend was a 7850. Man, what a difference 1 digit makes.

Hmm, maybe. Games that came out now were in production for a year or more before launch So games for 2015 are in development now or will be in development sometime this year. I'd believe that games being developed in 2015 are in their stride but not necessarily being released then.

Then again, this is the first x86 generation we've ever had. Developers know computers. I'm extremely hopeful that this generation sees significant advances in physics and AI rather than just graphics. Games like TLOU were really pretty already and wouldn't have benefitted that much from even more polygons. But better character physics and enemy A.I. would have made a difference. That and some of the way the engine seamed walls to floors (ever see that bright white line in the corners that clearly shouldn't have been there?).

Some things like the HDD aren't going to have a compatibility issue. Changing the HDD to an SSD would only improve performance and a Hybrid would do the same without compromising the storage space as much.

You wouldn't upgrade the other components, but the storage is fine. Sony specifically made the ps3 and ps4 with upgrading HDDs in mind.
