Alright basically I have been in Europe for the past ten days, with extremely limited internet access and use of AIM. My friend told me over AIM while I was on for like half an hour yesterday that PSN has been down all week. When I got home last night I looked up the problem and saw that it was initially thought to be Anonymous who had attacked PSN. Then I read further and they said it wasn't them, which I believe because they want to fight for the consumer, and have reversed actions in the past that have affected Sony consumers. Now I read what I think is the most recent update of the story, and Sony has basically said that it was the result of a hacker or hackers. Sorry if this post seems useless, but is this all that has happened? Am I missing a crucial bit of information that says a defined date that PSN will be back up? I really want to try the Portal 2 online features lol. Thanks for any help, and again, I am sorry for this post probably being repetitive/annoying but I am just looking for clarification on the issue.

I'm not sure I'd believe a word Anonymous says but Sony did admit on their blog that they were hacked and are fixing the problem so hopefully it'll be back up soon.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/

That's there official blog, when it's back up and running we'll know thanks to them posting about it.

SONY was using broad strokes on this one. A day after the anonymous 'press release' stating that they had nothing to do with PSN being down, SONY released information that an outside attacker was responsible for PSN being down. This lead many to draw the conclusion that a splinter cell within the loosely defined Anonymous was responsible for the attack.
Second part, SONY made no real time commitment as to when it would be back up. They did give us a list of things that had to do before it could be back up to try to justify why it is taking so damn long but as of right now it is 'a few days'.

Atleast the massage that I get when I turn on my PS3 has changed from an error massage to "PSN is currently undergoing maintenance".

That's something...right?

That is indeed something.

Anyway, hope it's back by Tuesday. I wanted to take advantage of the SOCOM sale and get Fireteam Bravo for PSP. Damn it.

Well Sony never actually named Anonymous for either incident but They claimed credtit for the 1-2 day outage over a week ago and a 6-7 days after that another series PSN Connection errors started happening but then Sony personally put the servers into Maintenance due to concern it maybe an outside force from a third party(which they never go right out and say is Anonymous) over a few days they started leaning towards it was caused by a third party.
With a message from Anonymous claiming they have nothing to do with the 2nd attack.

That's pretty much the current state of events.

Not including people saying:
1.You can't trust Sony
2.Anonymous isn't 1 just one group they are free to contradict each other and love to announce all their attacks publicly and/or take credit.
3. I believe Anonymous didn't do it because of (2).
4.Ha ha at people who bought PS3
5.Hey Maybe it's Steam's integration to PSN that's causing it.

Those being the bigger trends.

Hadn't considered that, but do you really think this could all be because of a simply software conflict? That they couldn't fix in a WEEK?

Look it isn't hard to figure out what happened.

Portal 2 is released on April 19th.
PSN is shut down due to "external intrusion" on April 20th.

1+1=2.

I'm just glad that my OS wasn't infected.

Your PS3 gives you massages?! AWESOME! ;D.

Ugh, you'd think Sony would be able to sort it a lot quicker. But whatever; it's given me a good excuse to get outside and get God of War 3 finally.

Sure, we have more trolls than every thread on 4chan combined, but that's why there's a mute button!

I always screw up that word.

Still, it would be pretty cool if you'd get a massage everytime you turn on your console.

I feel like that can't be the problem because as you said that is a problem easily fixable within a week. I don't feel like either company is incompetent at making software. And Sony probably told Valve that they have to make the software compatible because thats what Sony does, and Valve is definitely good enough to make something that simple. They have the best physics engine in any game ever made, and they can't make their game/software compatible with a console?? The very notion of that is laughable in my opinion.
