So, having read yet another review and feeling like indulging myself with another gamer gadget, I'm looking to buy a portable hand-held mini-console gaming device.

First of all: I'm not a big Mario / Zelda -fan. I have played my share of both on the 8-bit nintendo, but since those days my tastes have gone the way of blood, mayhem, gore, brutal end-moves and so forth. Also: I love heavy & indepth strategy, good storytelling and stuff like that. O', and I have always wanted to play God of War! Sooo, am I getting a little bit too obvious here? Yeah, I'm looking at the DS and thinking about pink fluffy bunnies and JRPGs - both of which are making me go into a insulin enduced shock right about nowish.

However, having never owned a miniconsole (or whatever they are called these days), I want some honest-to-god opinions on this subject. Where's the action at? How do they handle? Is one more technically advanced than the other? Which "version" of "what" should I be looking at?

I don't own a PS3, and I don't see that happening anytime soon, so I don't give rat's ass about any compability features between the PSP and the PS3. I do, however, care a great deal about framerates, image quality, sound quality and great game experience. Sooo...DS or PSP?

PSP is like a little miniature console capable of much better graphics than the DS (emphasis on capable), while the DS has a more unique control scheme.

In terms of games they both have their great titles.

It's a hard choice. I'd pick the DS

Get a gameboy and Pokemon Gold

well, the psp have some pretty games, but i prefer the ds myself, i think the gameplay feels natural and interesting even after some time, lots of games that experiments, even some violent ones.

but it doesn't have any driving games that work ;(.

and its called a handhold, not a miniconsole.

you may want to wait before buying a DS.

PSP. maybe it's because I hate using the touch screen to play games, but I haven't played my DS in over a year. Then I look at games like final fantasy dissiddea, (it's like a multiplayer kingdom hearts without the crappy convoluted plot) the new MGS game coming out, and soul caliber on the PSP and it really makes me want one.

I have a PSP myself and I really like the little guy. MP3 player, movie player and handheld gaming console all in one. Although, the titles for the PSP are a little more obscure and harder to come by (UMD :gag:) unless you do your shopping online. The DS is a little more "mainstream" and probably has more "fun" titles (my friends have DS's and love them). The PSP does have some golden games though.

Personally I prefer my PSP over getting a DS since the games made for the PSP (God of War, Burnout, Patapon, Little Big Planet, Lumines, etc...) are more my taste of game then Mario, Mario and, um... Mario? Heh... I'd look up the games for each system and see what you like. Plus I love the versatility of my PSP (as stated earlier) It's nice to be able to pump 4GB of MP3's on one stick, then flip over to a couple gigs of movies on another stick, then all of my game saves on yet another, all on one machine.

PSP because I love the abuse. Yeah its not as great, but I'm 24 years old. I would look weird using what looks like PDA for Japanese teen girls. I heard about the upcomming DS MAGNUM or XXL or whatever they call it but I've already chosen the PSP. Maybe next gen I'll go back to Nintendo if they bring back the Gameboy name.

I've never actually played a PSP, so by default I'm forced to go with the DS.

However, if I was going to go out and BUY one of these systems, I'd consult the list of Games for the PSP, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_psp_games] the list of Games for the DS [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_DS_games], see which one has more games I'd actually like to play and go from there.

Also keep in mind that the DS is compatible with GBA games [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS#Compatibility] if you happen to have any of those floating around.

Neither is worth getting unless you're going to mod them. DS is easier to mod and gets a better/larger selection of games since it sells a lot more units than the PSP, so if I were to buy one I'd go with that.
Interesting. Please tell me more about modding the DS/PSP, or maybe a link?

It depends on what games you want to play.
You won't get better advice than this.

Go to Wikipedia or something and check out games for both systems. Make a wishlist, and compare. Keep price in mind, and also check out each iteration of the handhelds - DS, DSi, PSP, PSPGo etc. Look at all the relative features, particularly games library, and make your choice.
