For just a couple of bucks you can get the CycloDS Evolution, which allows you to play mp3's, movies, books, ScummVM (for those old-school adventure games), emulators for a lot of consoles, Quake and Doom on your DS. But part of that was already mentioned. You might have heard of complicated patching that used to be required, but that is no longer the case.

The DS also doesn't have any loading screens, which is a big plus if you just use it for a quick gaming session in the train. And I really like the dual screens and touchscreen.

Apart from that, just look at which console better suits your gaming style.
The PSP has many of the same features as those described here, at an extra cost of roughly zero dollars. You can play movies and music pretty much out of the box. You can also boot up emulators as well. I've had SNES, Genesis, NES, and currently have PSX loaded up. However, you need to do some research on that, as it involves messing around with the firmware. Like with Nintendo, this is not approved by Sony.

Great, considering the PSP is a lot more expensive this means they have roughly the same features for roughly the same price. But the PSP has more processing power, the DS has two screens and touch. (I'm curious tho, can you play Monkey Island on the PSP and if yes, how is it controlled?)

I personally only have a DS, but that's because I couldn't care less about racing and beat 'm ups.

All in all, the decision isn't about features, but about the kind of game you prefer.

Well, I haven't played the PSP, but the DS seems to have very limited repetoire of GOOD games. It seems to appeal to casual gamers and kids.

That's just what I've seen, which I'm sure is far from definitive.

Im not a nintendo fanboy (not even close) but i bought a psp on launch day and apart from Street Fighter, Loco Roco & Katamari, i use it as a an MP3 player with a snazzy screen.

if u like games and not wasting money, DS your life up.
