PSP is beautiful for homebrew, and has plenty of decent games for it.

A friend of mine has a version of windows CE running on his, and another has a NES emulator on his.

They have plenty of actual PSP games but as others have said here, they tend to lose appeal.

It's definitely the more tech-geek system compared to a DS Lite. DSi is supposed to have wifi/web browsing and whatnot. I don't know much about it, but if the question is "Will I enjoy a PSP?"

Probably.

I'd do some research on the new PSP coming out - not rely on people here, and if it's gonna be soon, I'd wait.

I do not recommend the PSP. I owned one for a few years...just not so good. The DS has been a much better investment. There's no need for two analog sticks with those games.

Battery life crap? wha!? yea it may not be as long as the DS's but I could go entire college days (8:30am-5:30pm) and then some before my battery died, so yea...crap battery my ass. No games? Oh you mean back when it came out, because these days THATS NOT THE CASE so nay sayers should stop using that retarded argument. And if people are gonna say the damn thing is crap give GOOD reasons, and that doesn't mean bitching about lack of 2 sticks. And don;t hold your breath for a PSP2, any business person with common sense would know that it would be suicide to do something that like, and I like to believe Sony isn't THAT stupid.

Oh and who the fuck said the PSP was expensive!? it's near the same price as a DS lite (where I live DSlite=$130, PSP=$150-60), you should be expecting to pay slightly more when the thing comes with more features and is more advanced a system. But an extra 20-30 bucks isn't that big of a difference.

As for the OP, I would say wait till E3 so all these retarded rumors can be debunked and we get to see what is really in store for you. 2009's line up of games is pretty damn good so far. Be sure though when deciding what hand held you really want you look at the games. The PSP has a lot of great games and since you stated that your an RPG/strategy buff, the PSP has a good abundance of them. Don't entirely leave out the DS though since you can go either way. Just look at each systems library and judge your decision on what system has the most enticing games. Although if you get a PSP you get an entire multi media center thats portable, and if modded, can play all your old emulated games as well greatly expanding your gameplay options.

I lean more to the PSP, but try to take into consideration both systems.
Yay! Seraph to the rescue!

Anyone here who is just flat-out saying the PSP sucks is just regurgitating everyone's opinion of the PSP. It is a nice system though. That's not to say it is hands-down better than the DS, but just that, when considered by itself, isn't a bad system.

About firmware hacking: I bought my PSP with the intent of NOT hacking it. Hacks were a pain in the ass in the first years of the PSP, and I figured the game lineup had gotten good enough to warrant a purchase, but I think I was wrong. I got bored in little over 2 weeks, and I bought some of the better games that the PSP has. Hacking was the best thing I could have done for my PSP, because I was able to run SNES emulators, and eventually, PSX games as well. I fully recommend buying the PSP with the intent of hacking, but I can't be so emphatic about it if you don't. The PSP still has some great content, but I don't know how appealing it would be to be if it didn't have the hacks to go with it. I think that if I never hacked mine, I probably wouldn't use it at all. I found it to be a great video playback machine, especially at work, but I personally got bored with the PSP games, even the good ones.

Edit: I personally lean towards the DS, as the games on there just click with me better. There are other nice selling points about it too, but the games are what makes the DS worth it for me.

Its rumoured that a new version of the psp will be out by the end of the year with no UMD drive so battery life should be significantly improved.

Yea hacking it can be great, i personally have not hacked mine at all and I play the damn thing every day. Then again I enjoy all my games and I find a lot of replay value in many of them. My personal reason for not hacking it is simply....I just don't care. It would be nice and all but...I'd rather use my system for the games it was meant to play, and even if I did have emulators, i'd probably play my PSP games more anyways.

There are only a few reasons for me to hack mine. Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, FF6, and Bahamut Lagoon, I need not anything else :p

I owned a PSP and had Crisis Core and FF: War of the Lions. The PSP loses appeal very fast. The battery dies super fast too. I did buy a dsi and I love it. The battery is awesome and it has tons of final fantasy games. And Chrono Trigger. I would do the dsi to be honest.
Sigh, that's the problem. People assume that quantity is more important than quality.

While I agree that DS has more FF games, I must say that Crisis Core and FFT: WOTL is far and away better RPGs than anything on the DS. Not to mention that the God of War game on the PSP is a way better action game than anything else on the DS.

DS is more for the fun puzzles and fun hand-held type games like Mario and Mario Kart DS.

I have both DSi and PSP, and I like the PSP a lot better. But I do enjoy at least 3 DS games.

Sounds like another rumor to me. I say just wait till E3 to see if the PSP 2 or PSP Go! is announced.

(Otherwise, PSP. You're already leaning towards it, get a 3rd party battery, get custom firmware as so many others have suggested.)

If you know others with one or can get it working online then the PSP is worth it alone for the Monster Hunter series. I think I clocked nearly 300 hours beween the first two games. Despite the lame name it's a damn fantastic series that focuses more on staying out of the way of attacks and thinking through your own assaults on the massive wyverns. Then chopping bits off of them to make armor and weapons. I've never had so much satisfaction out of hunting down one enemy for half an hour, because using it's carcass to make a shiny helmet or massive sword is just plain awesome to me.

I don't know what you are all talking about with short battery life...mine has died once, and I had played it for seven straight hours without plugging it in.

Anyway, I'd get a PSP 3000 simply because the "PSP 2" is more likely to be useless with all the games on the market in UMD format right now. Also, it's short a whole bunch of features I would have found useful (WHERE'S THE SECOND ANALOG STICK FOR LOOKING AROUND!?!?! HUH, SONY??!! HUH?!?!?). Avoid shooters, they can get...weird, what with the "looking around" mapped to the face buttons. I'm kind of used to it, but they just aren't as fun as Patapon, Ratchet & Clank, and the Sega Genesis Collection, not to mention Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX.

i bought a psp recently, and had it just playing normally and got bored of it, so i got the pandora battery and it has become so much better
The battery also lasts longer cuz its not reading off a disc, so it dosnt use battery running it, plus you dont have to change discs every time you play a diff game, and if you want you can put homebrew games plus gba, snes emus etc, all free
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is awesome, the only game Capcom has ever made that I have liked
if you wanna mod your psp (which I would highly suggest) it cannot be a 3000 series, cuz you can't chip them

I bought a psp 2000 Daxter model and I freakin' love it. I have both a psp and a DS, and I think that they are both very good handhelds, I still play both of them, but this is a PSP thread.

Games: Games for the psp are very good really. I've managed to find heaps of good games to play on it, I don't want to go into a list now though lol.

Battery Life: Not awful at all, and if you have problems with it just buy another battery.

Hacks: INTENSE. Safari Web browser, Iphone portal, SNES, N64, GBA, and PS1 emulators, Mac OSX and Vista portals, PSPtube, UMDdumper, a mod to listen to music during games, the list goes on.

Multimedia Capabilities: A bit limited for some, but I'm lucky. My friend has an Uncle who has an entire wall devoted to 70s-90s Classic Rock/Metal, so I've got a lot of music. Video playing is alright, I've seen full length DVDs sold at gamestop for $4.99 before, and they were pretty damn good movies as well. Pictures aren't really worth mentioning.

All in all, one of the best consoles I've EVER owned, handheld or stationary. I love it, It follows me everywhere lol. The only advice I can give you is try to buy an older model of a PSP 2000 (aka standard Black, Ice Silver, or Plain White, the blue Madden 09 model, or whatever it was, will not work with hacks) and not a psp 3000, because they are only partially hackable. Hacks are very fun on the psp, and don't be worried about Bricking your psp if you have a Pandora Battery, you can easily fix it with it. Also, the 3000 has very few advantages over the 2000. The 3000 has an internal mic (not needed lol) a brighter and glare proof screen (I'm sorry, I've noticed neither of these things) and a lighter base (which is just shitty plastic that makes it feel like a popstation) Incredible system really, I'll be using mine for years to come.

You cant mod a psp brite, or the psp-3000's, u can only mod a few of teh psp 2000s and psp 1000s all can be, if they woulda left open that option, it woulda been much more fun, but ya it loses its appeal fast
*note* as far as the psp-2 goes, just looks like more things that coudl break

This is a very informative thread. I almost bought a PSP the other day. Although even after seeing all the warnings not to, I am still considering it just so I can get War of the Lions. Yes, I love FFT that much.

Bit late, but happy birthday,
glad to see everyone else was so eager to congratulate you.

But yeah, get a PSP for FFT and dissidia, oh and the few metal gear solid games.

Yes, the battery life is a lot shorter, but that's because it's supplying a huge bright ass screen, and some pretty nice graphics.
Yes because graphics are the only thing that matter in games these days.
