I have heard that you can get a PSX emulator for the PSP. I would really enjoy being able to play FF7 (and other RPGs) on it.

Is there a legal way of doing it?

If its illegal, then by all means close this thread.

Thanks

It's legal. Sony provided the emulator themselves. They provide a small selection of games you can buy. But if you want to play your own psx games from the cd, you have to get your psp hacked. Not illegal.

It's illegal, however the PlayStation store sells PS games for PS3,not sure about PS3.

Also, NEVER! EVER! say PSX, it's to be called PS and only PS, the PSX was a failed experiment released only in Japan that was just a PS with a built in VCR.
Wow, what were they thinking.

The PSOne Classics for PS3/PSP are what you may be thinking of, but they aren't very selective. In terms of RPGs the only North American options (that I can remember) are Wild ARMs and Suikoden.

The Japanese one has things like Xenogears, but they don't seem to be planning to release them to us, so you're only hope for things like FFVII is illegal hacking OR if they release an actual PSP UMD for it. (They won't have a PSOne classic for it most likely, because it is 3 discs long. Though I could be wrong, I don't know the technology very well.)

---Edit---

I may have messed up saying "selective." My point: there is virtually NOTHING available there. I bought 8 games from it: Rayman, Rayman 2, Crash Bandicoots 1-3, Spyro the Dragon, Wild ARMs, and Suikoden. MediEvil will soon join that list.

I'm disappointed that Xenogears and similar games are being hogged by the japanese.

I always hear alot of people bashing others for hacking PSP's and what not. I'm not sure if its just me but sometimes i don't see the problem with hacking and don't understand why people hate it so much. I enjoy playing FFVII on my PSP and I can be hated all I want

But the original is the PSX, that one is the other PSX. Strangled shortly after birth although ahead of it's time in several areas (large hdd, web connection, ability to store/playback movies).

There is a legal version of it, but it only works on certain firmwares. Final Fantasy VIII only works on older versions (3.73 or something, whereas we're at 5.02 last time I checked, same with Tony Hawk 2, Vagrant Story and a few others Final Fantasy VII and IX are working properly here). Thankfully, there's firmware "upgrades" (so you have to mess around in the BIOS a bit) called popsloader, that let you pick the firmware under which a PSX iso can be played, but it is homebrew, so it would require a hacked PSP. But it is the only solution if your firmware is too recent (though admittedly, I haven't gotten Vagrant Story nor THPS2 and FFVIII working yet, but I'm still playing through FFIX, and FF Tactics, so I'll be fine for a while)

Get it hacked if it's possible to your PSP (it can't be done to the latest few PSP-2000's and all PSP-3000's, though), so you can easily play all psx games you want, ànd get some neat homebrew on top of that (my fav is Anti-Tetris, most awesome homebrew EVER. Even better than Pocket Physics.)

I did it a while back and to my knowledge now you have to have a fatty PSP to do it. I followed a VEEEEEEEEERY LOOOOOOOOONG process but it was worth it. I used a style i found from goolge after searching for PSP hacks if I find it i'll let you know.

I hope you don't have a slim though because i don't believe it has been done for those yet.

I think it may be due to the whole piracy issue. Once you mod your PSP it's really easy to pirate games, my college prof has his modded and I played a game of wipeout with him. He copied the actual UMD over to his stick, thankfully he deleted it afterwords. Modding the PSP isn't bad at all, it just nulls the warranty and give you the ability to pirate. As long as you stay away from the piracy part modding is fine.

Need to mod it first by installing the custom firmware. Only way you can load up CFW is with a pandora battery (special modded battery).

youtube it, it's not that hard but you are better off either finding someone who can mod it for you or buying a premade pandora battery if you don't want to mod your current one. If you do it wrong you can brick your PSP...and you wouldn't want that now would you. I'v been meaning to mod mine for a while, but I have plenty of PSP games to keep me occupied.
