EDIT: This thread is nearly two years old, and I've had the PSP for nearly the same length of time. Input is appreciated for others researching this, but anything you say will probably be promptly ignored by myself.

So I have the chance to get a PSP, but I'm wondering if it'd be worth the investment. Basically, I want to know the best games it has.
I've got a few ideas for what I want on it already. Persona 3 Portable, Monster Hunter, and maybe LBP PSP.
Any others? I'm open to most genres, excluding sports and realistic racing sims, so most any suggestion would be cool.
EDIT: Not getting a vita because of Price+birthday time limit, just to clear things up.

If you can get it for a good price then yea they are pretty good. Some good games for it, Half Minute Hero is one of my favourites, and Crisis Core is awesome, plus there's many PS1 classics that you can get from the PSN.

Biggest problem I think is that it's not very comfortable, after a while playing my hands really start to hurt, and the anolog nub thing is pretty shite.
Any sort of controller accessories, like they had with the old GBAs to make it more comfortable?
And I remember playing the HmH demo on XBL, seemed pretty fun. That might be something to get.

Yes and No.

Yes if you can get it cheap and then mod it. (not condoning piracy here) You can do some awesome things with it modded, as well as some neato homebrew. Especially emulators, its nice to have every single old NES/SNES/Genisis game on the go with you.

But if your gonna pay full price, might as well buy like a refurbished iPhone or something and mod that, cause they games on the PSP are meh. Not bad, not great.

Yeah. After all these years, it's built up a large enough library to be worth it.

Just get a decent sized memory stick!

This'll probably make me sound derpy, but apart from saving games, what use would a memory stick be on a PSP?
Haven't seen many downloadable games I'd like to get, so I'd likely just use the memory to save games. Would I still need a stick for that, or will the console's own memory (if it has any) be okay for that?

I really like mine for on-the-go. Big titles like Persona 3 are available digitally if you want to invest in a lot of memory sticks, but if those are the only games you play, you might also think about waiting for Vita. Not all UMDs are going digital, though, so Vita won't get the PSP's entire back catalog.

A PSP can be had even cheaper than the DS. You get alot of value.
(but then you'll need a seperate memory stick and headphones and preferably a carry case too. something to consider)

So games:
Tactics Ogre is one of the best SRPGs ever made. This remake is fantastic.
If you want an action adventure instead, Daxter is very good.
The God of War games are stupid fun and also make good tech demos.

It's such a shame the PSP turned out a commercial failure compared to the DS, considering it is the superior hardware.

Vita seems like it'll be a bit too expensive. Plus, this'll be for a birthday at the end of the month, so I've got a time limit.

Then I'd go with the PSP. It's a nice little system. You can use it for PSOne Classics, too, and I don't think Sony will be discontinuing production and support all that soon.

I can't say my psp was my best investment. Far from it.

It had it's good titles like Birth By Sleep, Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters, God Eater: Burst, Peace Walker, God of War, etc. but not enough games to enjoy a purchase. I would wait for a vita. More games promised.

It's awesome if you like JRPGs (esp. SRPGs).

My recommendations:

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness - SRPG, features a ton of extra content not in the PS2 version.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - RPG, great characters and good combat.
Valkyria Chronicles II - a lot like the first one. Plot is a little less serious, but VC1 was a little too cheesy and melodramatic for me anyway.
Wipeout: Pure - racing, but fun!
Final Fantasy Tactics - classical SRPG
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together - classical SRPG
Half-Minute Hero - satirical action game/RPG-ish thing. Fun.
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd - awesome rhythm game. functionally perfect.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the console is region-free, so you can import.

I love Half-Minute Hero on my PSP :D
Well as a rythmn game I would suggest Guitaroo Man Lives! (the same as the PS2 game and it is awesome)
As for JRPG's I would suggest the remade Star Ocean series, well and all the other games mentioned here.

The PSP has a really nice and big library, reaching from RPG's to shooters.

PSN has quite good prices for PSP game to download to the stick. And frequently has sales on them, too.

THAT'S WHY.

I picked up Phantasy Star Portable 2 and Valk Chronicles 2 for $17.99 each when they still retailed for $40, even through online retailers.

Well, that seems rather nice. I may have to investigate more!

Metal Gear Ac!d is a series I loved on PSP, probably spent more time playing those games than anything else on it thanks to its local multiplayer mode.
