Are there studies about this?
Do you guys have a source?
Until you do, I must assume you are pulling facts out of your ass.
Yeah we do mate, it's called our freakin' lives. Seriously do you think either one of us would condone spanking - and lets be to the point about this because I don't think anyone supports child abuse - if we didn't think it helped shape our lives in a good way?

I'm not going to say that that's all my parents did to me. As far as parents go, mine have been the most supporting influence on my life, and as an adult I consider them part of my closest nework of friends - more so than parents. Through rain, hell or shine they nurtured, supported and protected me. And if that included giving me a kick up the bum for being a moron then so be it.
Two people don't represent the entire world.
There are other ways to instill obedience.
It's the argument of nature vs nurture

Two people mightn't but in case you're unaware the vast majority of people replying to this thread are for it.

Of course there are other ways to instill obedience. My parents didn't going around spanking me everyday of the week. Mostly they simply led by example - doing the right things, being law abiding citizens etc - or I would talk with them - scary thought I know!! Actuall comunication with family members. As a member of the family I had a voice and could give my opinion in any matter brought forward. As I've previously stated Love, Respect, Trust, Discipline. If discipline was required it was within reason and wasn't there to create obedience but simply to reinforce the values. Much like the police or the courts.

Lastly I was unaware there was 'an argument of nature vs nurture'. Both are the same as much as they are opposite. Like the 'Stick and the Carrot' both should be used with just measure.

vampirekid.13: thats what happens when u dont hit ur kids.
That is what I am arguing against. Every parent needs to hit their kids or else they become crimelords and drug dealers.
Spanking is not bad, but it is not required. My parents, and the parents of my friends, instilled values in their children to the point where it could be considered brainwashing, and punishments were almost never given, and never involved physical punishment.

Are you assuming I don't talk to my family?

Heh...Not really, but it does seem in this day and age I meet more and more people who seem to have it in with their imediate ancestors. That being said I know plenty others who get along with their relaties just fine so please forgive me if you were insulted. Simply read it as me being sarcastic.

In the end I think we agree on most points. Although I don't recall my parents instilling their beliefs in me to the point of brainwashing - or maybe that was part of the conditioning...hmmm. A good strong family upbringing like both of ours is essential in the development of a child to adult. I just guess that having a Dad who's a Lawyer part of that upbrigning for me involved the punishment matching the crime.
