There haven't been many dogs in sci-fi as far as I can remember, the only two I can think of are Ein, the Welsh corgi from Cowboy Bebop (although wasn't he technically a computer?) and also Porthos, Jonathan Archer's English beagle from Star Trek: Enterprise although I'm kind of trying to pretend that series never happened.

So, what sci-fi series do you think would be improved if it included more puppies/dogs? Would Anakin Skywalker have turned to the Dark Side if he had a fuzzy little companion to help him through his troubles? Could the crew of Firefly have had less trouble if they had a guard dog to keep an eye on their cargo?

Also, do you know of any movies or television shows set in space where a dog has played a key role as either a support character or a main one?

Not "technically" a fully fledged dog but Doctor Who had K9.

Battlestar Galactica. Come on now, you know you'd laugh if you just watched a dog cock up it's leg and piss on a Cylon.

There was some cartoon a few years back about all Earths dogs being put on a spaceship and evacuated to a new planet with the humans on a diffrent ship, but it went of course and was lost, que adventureus kids saving them. I think it was called Dogstar.

I just looked it up and the premise sounds so hilariously stupid that it's actually one of the most awesome things I've ever heard of.

There was a movie about how all dogs came from outer space and one dog was sent to earth to check to see how the invasion was going to find out all the dogs were pets now. The movies name escapes me though.

EDIT: It was good boy!

Does Krypto, Superman's dog, count? Like, Superman is an alien, and maybe Krypto was too.

Also, Batman (who has lots of silly ci-fi gear) has/had the Bathound, which totally wasn't suspiciously similar or anything.

Frankly I'm reminded of this video: Other than that I don't really know of any sci fi dog in space.

What was wrong with Enterprise? Sure, the intro music was a little out, but otherwise it was a good series.

There was an Asimov short story about a dog on a space station. But he was an interloper that the parents bought to replace their son's robot dog, much to his chagrin and anger. (Asimov's short stories always end with Robots FTW for some reason...)

Oh but we're talking movies or television shows. Okay that's a hard one. Funny because it's not like there haven't been ACTUAL dogs in space...

I can just see 2001: A Space Odyssey. "What is it Lassie ? HAL is up to no good ? Don't be ridiculous !".

Y'know, I actually have no idea. Its been so long that I've completely forgotten about the show and I can't actually remember exactly what I didn't like about it. I might like it again if I watched it, but when I wrote what's quoted above it was supposed to be a half joke since I remember I saw something on there and I just stopped watching because of it. It might also be because I was also watching a lot of Firefly, Andromeda and Farscape at the time, so it seemed a little lacking in comparison to all the doolally crap that went on in those shows.

oh my god, i fucking loved that show.
plus there was Krypto the Superdog.
and you could count Chewie as being a dog, in that he's a fuzzy companion to Han.

The original Battlestar Galactica had a robot dog called... *googles* ... a daggit. Does that count?

Here are some which come to mind:

Pochi from 'Welcome To The Space Show'

Menchi from 'Excel Saga'

Friender from 'Casshern Sins'

There are a lot more, this are just three from some animes I could remember right now.

Oh, and an animal would change the reactions and behaviour of characters as it also does in real life.

Well this is a nice change of pace XD. Personally I believe that the Mass effect series could greatly be improved upon with a fluffy companion. I mean, Shepard just doesn't seem like a fish person, he/she looks like the strong commander that roams the universe with a big German-Shepherd companion by his side and in his/her arms.

Laika the Russian Space Dog. How soon we forget.
I was going to put that, but I was referring specifically to fiction. It is tragic what happened to that lovely little Jack Russel, but she actually existed so that takes the fiction out of science fiction.

The was a dog in new Battlestar Galactica, his name was Jake and he was a hero of the resistance.

On new Caprica during the occupation. Gaeta would turn over his bowl to indicate to Tyrol when he had hidden improtant info about the Cylons plans in the old desk.

He is also given to Romo Lampkin latter in the show to replace his cat.

There's a corny children copy-and-paste Movie called Space Buds which involves a group of retriever/Labrador (I forget) finding their way onto an unrealistic spaceship and accidentally fly off into space.
