I would send meteors at the earth that were large enough to wipe out the human race but, and this is the key, each meteor would be small enough that human technology could deflect it. Shortly after each meteor is dealt with, another meteor would be discovered on the way to earth.
Soon the entirety of human civilization would be built around surviving the constant barrage of planet killing meteors. As new anti meteor technology is invented, conditions would become more desperate. The meteors would become larger or thousands of small meteors would come at once.
As a natural consequence of developing anti meteor technology, space travel would advance at an incredible rate. Eventually the human race would decide that the only possible way to survive would be to flee the planet. Humanity would build hundreds of massive transports that would take them from this doomed planet in the hope that they might find a safe haven in deep space.
It is then that the largest meteor would be spotted. A meteor so large that human technology has no hope of deflecting it or even slowing it down. Humanity would be able to calculate the exact second they meteor would impact and the earth would be destroyed. It is now a race against time. Can the transports be completed before the earth is destroyed?
The vast majority of the transports would not be ready in time, and the few that were would be defective due to the haste of their construction. It turns out that the last human dies only days away from reaching a new earth like planet. They will die of thirst due to a faulty water reclamation system.
