£50 an hour? That's not a bad rate, really... plus with all that writhing you'll be in better shape than if you're stuck at a desk all day! I get £7.70 an hour with unpaid compulsory overtime, so hit the button a few times each day, freaking sorted :D

Though perhaps observing it being pressed by others a few more times would be a good idea... to check consistency and look for any noticeable pattern n all that.

You see a button on a wall with a sign that says "Push this button for $100,000!" (Please substitute for a similar amount of your country's currency from here on if needed)

SNIP

So, will you press it? If yes, what is your reasoning?

[Addition:] Ugh, ok, this isn't about trying to beat the system. Even if you use a stick or rock or rubber suit, you still get shocked. It's a magic shocky button that dispenses money. -_- This is a question of philosophy on risk/pain vs reward, not a riddle.
[Addition 2:] Ok, you people are really ruining this by thinking too much. You can't steal the money from other people. This is about YOU and YOUR decision to press the button or not. But, yes, sitting to watch for a pattern is an acceptable answer.
But thinking about these questions expose the huge flaws in philosophic thinking and thought experiments. Its never just A or B, there is always hundreds of variables involved within real life examples. On these grounds, i will refrain from answering the question...

Hell yes, I'd smack the crap outt'a that button. $50 for an hour's work? It's not like its emotional trauma like from working in retail, it'll heal. Heck, I'd get right back up and push it again after the hour was up, like some kind of zappy Skinner Box.
Goddamn it, I was so close to being original :p guess most repliers so far aren't employed XD

I wouldn't. I can already afford bacon. Anything else is a luxury that i don't really need.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing expecting different results.

I turn around and go home.

Calumon: I get Jack to press it! :D

Jack: I'm not pressing it.

Calumon: But I want some cake... D:

I have come to enjoy your Gems on here, and this one was one of the best.

As for me, money is not that important to me, and I am not the kind to watch people suffer... so Jack, wait up man.
P.S. Calumon, we could always convince Impmon to do it ;)

You could have made it simpler and just asked "would you endure an hour of pain for 50 dollars" without any of the dumbass scenarios. *shrug*

No, I would probably not endure an hour of excruciating pain for 50 dollars. I'd do many things for 50 dollars, but I'm not *that* desperate.

The idea wasn't just 1 hour of pain = $50. The idea was to see how people weigh up the pros and cons of a given senario. Here you have a possibly for a reward with a possiblity of pain, with very little info to go on with regards to how they relate.

I'm not that much of a gambler...heck, not even in Fallout.
So, I'll probably call an ambulance for the guy who got shocked (I'm not just going to stand there for an hour) and probably leave a report about this event, and make sure it gets investigated...
Oh yes, I'm lawful good, in case you were wondering.
EDIT: My test now says I'm neutral, whatever.

The frist thing I thought of is why would I watch someone rolling on the floor in pain for an hour? Seriously what kind of sick freak just stares at a person in pain for a whole hour doing nothing, never mind deciding to do what he did to be in that pain. This scenario is all kinds of dumb.
This, this 100%

I was like "Wow. 'about an hour later' are you serious? Yeah I have nothing better to do, I find this button and watch some guy thrash about in extreme pain for an hour."

Obviously the correct answer is to get a bulldozer and break down the wall where the button is, thereby destroying the electric shocking unit and the cash dispenser unit. All the remaining cash will plummet into my lap, and I flee the country with my massive amount of cash, because otherwise I'd be arrested for stealing a bulldozer.

Get a little shock and recieve money? HA! I pee against power plants and my friends call me Pikachu.

Alright, that's a lie, but I'd still do it. Worst case scenario? I crap myself and have to spend that 50? on a new pair of pants.

Truthfully? Probably not. Pain = bad.

Still, the scientist in me relates well to that one XKCD comic. http://xkcd.com/242/
Probably watch for a while, see if there is a pattern, and if I find a way to avoid pain through that pattern, then yea, go for it! Otherwise, not really worth it.

Then again, if I hadn't seen the guy get shocked and only recief 50 bucks, but was told the button would hurt, I'd probably give it a go. That's allot of money and could save some pain in the future. Then I'd get 50 bucks and cry before going to find the guy who set up the button and ask for the rest of my money.

Yeah, I'd push it. Even if it's only £50, as a student, that's worth getting painful amounts of lightning to the face for. If I do it every couple of days, I actually end up fairly well off. And probably incapable of using any form of electronic device, but meh

I would tell others not to press it, as they would be put into such pain that the 50 dolars it rewards them with is not worth it.

It doesn't seem right to let this happen at all.

I'd like to commend everyone who went with a "stop this madness" approach of helping or prevention of further pain. That actually falls into one of the options of the spirit of this exercise.
