So I used to play a fair bit of RTS games a while ago (The Stronghold series and Comand and Conquor series mostly). And I liked them. But eventually I started other things and just didn't have time.

Now that I work I get 2-3 days off a week, and just generally have more free time (because 9/10 times my days off are on weekdays when every one else is at school or work). And I figure why not ?

I'm probably gonna re-instal (we changed computers since) some of my old games. But I also want to see if there are any new/ones I don't already own that are worth checking out. I prefer more "historic" styles (Middle Ages, Ancient Rome, just generally pre-modern) than "Modern/futuristic" but if it's good Im not to picky.

I don't exactly have a hardcore gaming system. But I figure it could atleast be decent. What are some ideas ?

I say Starcraft 2, being biased and all. I'd also recommend the Age of Empires if you don't have that already as well as the Total War series. I'm not sure if Men of War fits your description of pre-modern, but I say you should check that out if you haven't already.

Well, I'll give you my top 3 because I'm generous.

1: Company of Heroes
2: Starcraft 2
3: Battle for Middle Earth 2

I can't really think of any historical games to recommend you, but I can think of a couple of pre-modern fantasy games.
1) Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos and its expansion, The Frozen Throne. Brilliant.

2) Armies of Exigo, basically a Warcraft 3 clone, and thankfully, an extremely good one.
3 main races with 3 campaign arcs, it'll take up a lot of time.

3) Age of Mythology, just on the off chance that you haven't played it. A classic, genre
defining game.

4) Not exactly pre-modern, but Rise of Legends is a unique game, based on the Rise of
Nations games. It has 3 incredibly original races, and an interesting Risk style map.

As I said. I prefer more older in setting games. But as long as the game is good I like it.

One thing I always wanted to play is ones where you get to command larger groups of forces. I remeber playing games like Age of Mythology and really liking it. So I'll probably play that again. But I also really want to see being able to control a much larger group.

The Total War series is the best if you want to command thousands of soldiers in a battle. Rome Total War and Medieval II Total War are both pre modern, and both have a lot of great mods.
Another similar game is Warhammer Mark of Chaos, though I've never played it.
