I don't see the problem. Game production is not a zero-sum game (no pun or other wordplay intended). More casual games does not mean fewer "hardcore" games. As long as there are hardcore gamers, there will be money to be made making hardcore games.

Your analogy to fast food is pretty apt. Casual games (of which I have indulged in quite a bit myself) are very nice because you hop in, play for an hour or two, then you're done with the game. Flash games are awesome like this. I think about playing a PC game and I get stuck with installing, patching, and load times. Egads the load times.

When it comes to restaurants, I absolutely loathe fast food and avoid it if at all possible. Yet, restaurants aren't very viable either. Going to one often involves dedicating 70-90 minutes of time. Often 15 minutes of that is spent before the meal has even been ordered. Then another 15 minutes while it's prepared, then maybe 5 more minutes just to pay. Tack on an extra 5 minutes getting there and getting back and it all adds up. I ate my food in 20 minutes, but why did I spend almost an hour and a half with all of the bullshit?

Now that I think about it... I hate going to restaurants too. When I cook at least I know how much cream and butter and everything that makes it unhealthy but taste stunningly good goes in.

Modern Warfare 2 are expections to this rule - they aren't shovelware, and have enthusiast gamer fans.
See I have to slightly disagree because so many aspects of this game are made to suit the main stream and not the enthu market, the major example would be the lack of dedicated servers and the fact the story line is so short.

But other than that your post is so very right and it made me sad also :(

Games are doing better than ever. What, do you think all those good games that were made in 1995 don't exist anymore? With digital distribution and the Internet, every good game made in the last 20 years can make its way into a home and be played!

Okay, I know we're talking about new releases here. And yeah, I'm of the opinion that the last gen was better than this one in terms of games. But the presence of new crap doesn't take away from all the gems of the last two+ decades.

While companies will make crappy games for profit's sake, there will ALWAYS be devs out there who make games out of a genuine passion for games .

Good games will always exist, even if you whiny SOBs have to get off your ass, get a college education and make 'em yourself.
