Well after losing much of my data, I need to start BG over and for my character Human Fighter, I decided to not use 2h swords this time.

I decided to go Sword and shield but what is the difference between the Short Sword skill/Long Sword (are long swords 1h?) and Sword and Shield Style?

Now depending on which type of sword I choose, do I raise sword and shield style, and Short or Long Sword Style?

or only Long/short stlye or Sword and Shield Style?

(this is BG1 with tutu)

If you want to go sword and shield, your points should be focused in Sword and Shield skill (which increases your AC while using that setup I believe) and whatever sword you prefer to use.

Short swords are lower damage and higher speed, Long swords are higher damage and slower speed. What's best depends on what you're trying to do with that character. I assume you want to tank, and in that case I'd recommend Long Swords or Katanas.

Personally, I usually go Sword + Shield and Katana skill for tanks, because in BG2 at least, the best sword in the game was a Katana you get from one of the churches.

Hmm... it's been a while man. I'm pretty sure long swords are 1h but have a slower attack rate with a higher damage vs short swords? Putting points into Sword and Shield Style I think, THINK, is purely for the shield benefits. You'll still want to put points into your sword style of choice.

Also, are you using Baldur's Gate Tutu? If not, google it. Tutu puts Baldur's Gate into the Baldur's Gate II engine (oh my!).

So 2 points into Long Sword and 2 into Sword and shield?

Since while I am using the BG2 engine for 1 with tutu, I assume that katana isn't here.

Thanks for the Tutu heads up. Ill have to roll with that. Sword and Shield benefits the AC bonuses you obtain as well as helping with the number of attacks you get to perform as you level up. Long swords are considered one hand swords though bastards swords still qualify for it (even though bastard swords are "hand and a half" swords). I went through the first BG multiple times and got my Character maxed out past 20 in all stats with the Tomes that are scattered about so my AC base is like 0 lol. This makes me roll with Two Handed swords to max out Damage and number of attacks. Just a personal preference.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but as far as I remember Sword and Shield Style doesn't actually increase the AC you get from wielding a shield, it increases the AC vs. projectiles you get from wielding a shield. If someone calls me wrong I'm not going to argue against that, nut that's how I remember it.

Yea, Katana's probably aren't there, but I wasn't sure which game you were looking at.

You should have 6 points total at character creation, and if so, go 3 Long Sword 2 Sword + Shield and one in Short Sword or Bastard Sword or whatever to diversify a bit.

If you're short of that, I would recommend 3 Long Sword then whatever extra into Sword + Shield as best you can.

Long Swords are sort of the "Middle of the road" for basic one-handed swords in BG. Bastard Swords are a little slower but I think they are 2d6 damage whereas Long Swords are 1d8. I usually go with Bastard Swords if the character is more of the "brick shithouse" kind of Fighter with an insane Strength stat.

My main character is usually always a two-handed sword wielding Barbarian but I try to keep a heavily-armored Fighter around with Sword & Shield Skills to help mitigate some of the damage. Never really got into the Katanas myself, I'm shamefully more traditional in the kind of weapons I use... also I'm speaking from memories from about 8 years ago when I actually last played Baldur's Gate.

I regret that I turned into a bit of graphics whore when it comes to character appearance, I usually resort to Neverwinter Nights 2 for my D&D fix these days. Also because my Baldur's Gate 1 is the original 5 CD set, not including the Tales of the Sword Coast disc, and it's a ***** to install.

Still, I kind of miss the TSR days and 2nd Edition AD&D rules.
