That is really a truly unfair comparison..... M.E. and D.A. are built around the Story. EVERY Aspect of the game has something to do with the Story.... even the damnable guns are Story Bonuses. I mean, shit, are you serious? You're going to compare Skyrim to 2 games created by [pretty much] psychotically obsessed novel-writers, who love their book so much that they make it so long it can fit like 50 novels and a few children's books, and then turn it into a game.....

I love Skyrim to death. Its by far my favorite game EVER. But you are comparing the games with supposedly the most Story on the market, SINGLE GAMES [not fanchises, or trilogies, or WORLDS, just that singular title alone.]...... Thats like comparing a newborn kitten to a full grown, slightly starved female mountain lion with starving cubs.....
Whoa, buddy...keep your pants on. I didn't say Skyrim was a bad game, or needed an amazing story. The guy asked how the story was. If he asked how the open world was in Dragon Age, I'd compare it unfavorably to Elder Scrolls.

I mean, I even say RIGHT IN MY POST YOU QUOTED that the lack of a strong linear narrative is part of the trade off for the freedom you're given. Did you just leave your switch set on "attack" or something?

The other difference is that TES has a much much better story universe compared to mass effect. They have some many books and lore and history, it just leaves ME and DA in the dust. And you can experience the bigger story all over the place. But the main quest line isn't that impressive a story. It is just a motivator to get you to experience the world and the larger
story and the smaller stories.

It is very weird bcause I want to say the Story for Skyrim is both a whole lot more rich than either ME or DA, but a lot easier to miss and the main quest line doesn't force to you experience any of it like it does in ME and DA.

Have you played Fallout: New Vegas? Did you find the different factions and the struggle for power between the NCR and Caesar's Legion interesting? Then you'll like Skyrim's plot.

One thing I really like about Skyrim is that there's basically no such thing as an empty dungeon. Just about every single camp or dungeon or mine I've explored has something going on at some point. I've met some really interesting characters and had quite fascinating side quests appear organically through my exploration. All the quests are far more involved than in Oblivion.

The only thing is that the game doesn't spoonfeed every detail to you; it doesn't treat the audience like idiots. If you want to know the full, fleshed out story behind it, you have to talk to people, read books, and pay attention to things going on. It actually requires you to think and analyse what's going on and draw connections between what the different people, quests, towns, cities and factions tell you about the world. There's no big sign telling you who's the villain, who's misguided, who's weak, who's losing power, the historical context that caused everything, but the evidence is all there. And it's very deliberately placed there; it's no accident at all, nor something I've just invented by over-analysing things. All those details are there for you to put together for yourself and draw your own conclusions about the overarching conflicts and tensions.

This is true, but it's important to keep in context that Mass Effect and Dragon Age are only a few years old, with a couple of entries each in the series. Mass Effect in particular is basically one game broken into three parts, taking place over an extremely limited span of time. The Elder Scrolls series is now coming close to 20 years old, with 6 entries in the series, and each entry separated by hundreds of years. Of course the lore is richer...they've been world building for longer than some people on this forum have been alive. A more "fair" comparison would be to compare, say, DA 1 and 2 to Arena and Daggerfall, respectively. Dragon Age fares a lot better in that comparison.

Well yes. But I?m not trying to be fair. They guy said, I really like games with good stories will I like Skyrim? So I?m trying to say, if you don?t read any of the books and rush through the main quest, probably not, but if you enjoy exploring the region reading the books, finding the hidden backstory, running into the occasion complete non-tangential story that reveals itself in notes that you find as you explore a dungeon then yes you?ll love Skrim. It has a lot of story in it. It is just that the main quest is only a so so story.

For me it depends on the quest chain. The College of Winterhold (mages guild in skyrim) Quest chain was well.. horrible. The individual quests are OK but the overarching story is just nonsensical and stupid.

The Dark brotherhood however nails both the individual quests and the overarching story.

Skyrim's story feels like more of an afterthought to the richly detailed world they created. The setting takes priority and the story is meant to inhabit it. Individual characters are not usually going to seem all that compelling or deep, and you probably won't care all that much about the plight of the Nords. That said, some of the guild quests do a good job of making interesting characters, but they're also rather short.

Basically, if a great setting isn't enough to make you feel immersed, then this isn't the game for you.
^I agree with every word this man says.

in terms of immersing the player within its world and the characters that interact with you?
It's a massive improvement over oblivion. Yet the story and the characters are pretty dull, and the animations have pretty noticeable flaws. If you can overlook those flaws, the Norse setting and dragons are pretty fun. I wouldn't call it "immersive" like I would Mass Effect 2, Skyrim's strengths lie in other areas.

I used to think Oblivion was great, until I took an arrow to the knee.
And I was an adventurer like you too.

OT:
I like my RPG's to have a blander story where they are not all in awe of me and I was just someone in the game. do i care about the main storyline? not always and thats not exactly a bad thing, if I wanted a great story and the protagonist being the full on hero i would watch a movie. with RPG's I want to create my own character in how he deals with the story in the game and that only works when the story is kinda bland.

The story and characters are decent, but not great. The world that's created is where the immersion in this game lies. If you can give your own character a story and an identity without much plot telling you who you are, then get immersed in the world, you'll enjoy it immensely.
