I need a new phone. I already have a contract, with a voice and text plan (I think its called), but no data(internet) plan. I would just be buying a new phone, but no new contract, because I really don't need constant internet connection, and I almost always have free wifi available.
Now the only phones that I can buy with the features I want, are smartphones.

So my question is, if they can be used without a data plan, and not be constantly connected, so I don't get a huge bill at the end of the month. Of course I still want calling, sms and mms to work. Is this possible?

Honestly all smart phones come with a data plan, because of the functionality. I get 500MB a month, I have never got near it and had it for 21 months, the only time I've paid over my contract was when I was abroad and when my ex was not an ex and moved back home.

You're better off bitting the bullet and getting data on your contract.

That all said blackberry's I know you can turn the data funtion off whilst you are roaming around..

You can on any android phone turn off your data connectivity, definitely on Samsung galaxy S, but because it's in the software it'll work with all droids. Some apps will get pissy with you, but you can set pretty much anything to only update on wifi.

Great! Thanks for the replys.
