I'm sorry, but I just can never go back to Starcraft. I mean sure, it was great for it's time when it first game but after I played the revolution of RTS that is Company of Heroes, I can just not go back to "build base, harvest, build 9001 tanks, rush enemy." I say Starcraft in general because Starcraft 2 is exactly the same, just with new graphics and afew new units. Same thing with C&C, I just can't go back to that stale RTS type. Gameplay has evolved so much thanks to games like Company of Heroes and Dawn of War that I just don't even enjoy the gameplay of Starcraft anymore. I'll admit CoH has declined in quality with expansions but even with that it's still an amazing game. How do you guys feel about things?

PS: If your an RTS fan and haven't tried Company of Heroes yet I highly recommend it.

I do suppose if your buying it just for the singleplayer story then I can understand that, but still. I guess I'm directing it more towards the competitive multiplayer.

Oh i have played Company of heroes through and through, vigorously online aswell. The whole company of heroes game went to the toilet when they decided to stop balance patching it more. Atm there are some gross balance issues in the game that will never be taken care of.

Example of gross balance issue was when OF released and the brits defensive positions were near invulnerable, it's just a Turtlers dream, Turtling is the biggest wrecker in rts's, when its a game where you are required to hold specific points on map its just down right unfair. Not to mention they barely effected manpower upkeep.

1v1 in COH is also pretty boring, as it really never evolves beyond basic infantry wars ending after 15 minutes as the maps are way to small.

The franchise also decided rather then evolve the wonderful RTS game COH was, to make into some squad base arena fight thing, like DOW2 with no building or training what so ever.

Then they just abandoned it and started making a Korean COH MMO?

Company of heroes is also just a bit too random when it comes to combat aswell, retreat being the invulnerability button that it is doesn't help much either.

Starcraft however, you bet your cream biscuit they are going to keep balancing that game until its as finely tuned as a f-1 racer.

And they defenatley wont abandon it and decide to warp it into some pvp arena sheit.

Innovations in gameplay don't render the fun obsolete in old games. Some prefer the way the older RTS games play. I certainly do.

I'm curious about this. What is it that you prefer? I'm just curious, I'm not knocking anyone's opinions.

Lines I've bolded are (in order): An untrue strawman, something that is untrue (unless you're one of those people who thinks everything is the same as everything else because of basic details), and an opinion. Why should I listen to these?

Also, CoH isn't that big a revolution. It's innovative maybe, but that couldn't automatically make it better. And if the news that Starcraft 2 has sold more since it's release than Starcraft 1 did in twelve years, along with the news that stuff like CnC4 has flopped horribly, people seem to prefer that 'stale' RTS type.

I liked the fact that CoH and DoW 1 had base building. It still required the act of capturing resources points (such as fuel and ammo in CoH) and could be regarded as harvesting. However these are points on the map that say there for an infinite period of time. In classic RTS's resources will often get depleted and new sources of income must be found to kep the money rolling in. It's a new level of strategy.

I played SC2 and it was a breeze to get into it again because of my experiences with the likes of C&C95, RA95, Homeworld 1 and 2, TA, Tiberium Sun, WC3 & FT, RA2, Emperor: Battle for dune, SC, SupCom and others.

I found it (SC2) a lot more interesting, challenging and fun than the likes of DoW 2 that focuses on squad combat. I got frustrated that my troops wouldn't follow the orders I was giving them (probably due to my own incompetence) and lamented the times I had to restart a level.
In a classic RTS I could simply have built up another army from my base and attacked the objectives.

I would also like to point out that a tank rush game would be, by my own experiences, the likes of Red Alert 1. Starcraft does't lend itself to tank rushes because of the balancing in the game (as an example) and the number of possible counters to such an action.

I guess it's just down to personal taste.

Starcraft? Never played it.

But for what it's worth, I've played WC III for around 7 years now. And I'm not even sick of it yet. I've heard they are quite the similar, which isn't such a huge surprise since they're made by the same company, Blizzard.

How's that for longevity?

How can I go back? Why, my dear boy, I never left. I've been steadily playing Starcraft for over a decade, and have no plans to stop. Although I don't care for the second.

StarCraft's 1v1 game is wickedly balanced. It's probably my favorite online mp experience.

Well, here's the thing. Starcraft is insanely balanced. The number of units for each side is small, but each one has several different uses depending on the strategy and every strategy has several possible counters. Even your swarm of tanks or battlecruisers can fall prey to lightning attacks or spore clouds in the hands of a wily opponent. Important also is that resources run out, making an endless standoff impossible.

I didn't find Dawn of War terribly innovative. Yes, you command by squads, and you get requisition points instead of crystals, but what's so special? Units are capped at low, arbitrary levels, air units are barely in the game, and defenses are utterly useless. The key problem is that resources are unlimited whilst units are cheap and quick, making throwing away (or defeating) an army matter little. I will admit, however, that giving each faction it's own resource or system was a good idea and I would like to see more of this in the future.

Company of heros is alot like dawn of war 2 right?

I have to say I prefer the larger unit combat with an emphasis on strategics and sort of anti micromanagement aspects.... try out supreme commander (the original not #2 which kind of sucks balls by comparison)

However I will grant you that breaking it down into rush fests can suck and gets old... see warhammer mark of chaos... nobody played that game, I find it exceedingly elegant, and well balanced.... nearly as good as Supreme Commander.
