Question for the Old Timers: Favorite Arcade Game?

X-Men Arcade always got a lot of action but I think that was solely because 4 ppl can play at the same time.

Unless you were playing it at an arcade with some sort of ghetto homebrew cabinet, that game supported SIX players.

Most of the Arcades fitted it into a Simpsons/TMNT/Gauntlet 3 model.

I remember going to the arcade with my older brother a few times when I was little but don't remember to many of the games from back then.

I do remember Area 51 though, I would LOVE to see them do that for the Wii, it would be a perfect fit and I'd pay $15 for it. Gauntlet II got quite a few of my quarters too I have that on the Game Boy Advance now though.

Awww, no love for the Metal Slug series? I'm only 19 but I remember hitting the game arcades around Logan, Brisbane and always playing Time Crisis, Silent Scope, Daytona 400, Metal Slug, Tekken and Street Fighter. But at the end of the day, my love was for the little SNES that sat hooked up to my TV at home.

Remember playing it at the arcade in the giant theater when I was younger. Big reason why I got MvC 3.

Well, given the not-precisely-subtle hint towards older arcade games...no quarter of mine (or my parents') was safe if I was anywhere near a Samurai Shodown machine.

Technically, since I still play arcade games, I have to admit Guilty Gear XX was probably the most influential one for me. Or possibly Melty Blood: Act Cadenza. Or Arcana Heart.

Virtual On is also an old favourite, though it's bloody hard to find anywhere that still has a Virtual On cabinet.

I miss that game so much. Even though I only ever played one character, it was still fun as hell.

Seriously? That's awful.

I haven't played that game in quite some time, but I seem to recall each set of controls being tied to a specific character. Does the four player version simply axe two of the characters? I can't imagine they added in a character select screen just for franken-cab setups with less than six players.

I remember the two player Time Cop arcade game. It was in every bloody arcade you could ever visit in my city, and I think it still is around the place.

My brother and I co-op'ed whenever we went to an arcade lock-in and we'd pretty much hog the machine for the full hour.

Either the Simpsons arcade game or Carn-Evil. They were both a lot of fun, but hard as shit and at up my quarters like no tomorrow.

Missile Command, Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and a few others where great early games. TMNT, Area 51, X-Men, Simpsons, and a few of the side scroller and rail shooters of the time where great as well. Kind of stopped bothering with arcades after those. Did hit up Gauntlet Legends a few times through.

I seem to remember playing TMNT at a restaurant where that was it's only arcade cabinet just sort of off to the side.I loved that game.


I think my true love will always be reserved for the House of the Dead games,there so cheesy but so damn fun.

Im gonna have to go with spyhunter, I swear I must have dropped a hundred bucks worth of quarters into that game when I was a kid. There wasnt much cooler then driving around in a sports car, shooting spys and terrorists, and then being able to transform into a speedboat to keep going

The arcade game that ate most of my quarters would probably be the Capcom D&D series, christ I loved those games, to this day i'm still tempted to scream out STICKS TO SNAKES!!! when I play a cleric

The Star Wars Trilogy - the only game I played often enough to be able to get through the whole thing with no Continues.

At Uni I did get quite into a Golf game, the only time that's ever happened!

I was a regular at the arcades when MK came out. I watched in amazement after Lui Kang performed his cartwheel uppercut Fatality at The Pit and sent someone plummeting to their death. I was hooked ever since. There hasn't been another game that fully captured that kind of attention with me. Killer Instinct and NBA Jam gave me the bug really bad too, but nothing quite like the MK series (MK on through MK3U anyways).

I now own both NBA Jam Tournament (4-Player machine) and SFII Coin-Ops, with a bunch of Jamma boards for the lot. Even with the online options of Fighters today, there is really no way to capture the feel of Fighting to keep your win streak alive to actually stay at the machine. Then the walk of shame to the back of the line after your win streak is finally broken. The demise of the classic Arcade really is one of the greatest disappointments ever...

ah arcades, good times. still love them though, now i just use mame to relive the fond memories of my childhood, which wasnt that long ago.
ot: street dunk anyone? it was totally kickass
and the classic shooters like virtual cops, hotd and time crisi, i enjoy seening sequels to those titles
also in china, we had these arcade machines that gave out tickets as you played, and you could exchange those tickets for a prize, and others which gave out tokens as you played. the latter was seen as gambling and many arcades that i used to go as a kid closed down
