Well sonny things have always been tense. Back in my day i remember under President Kennedy we were constantly standing on the brink of nuclear war with Russia. Every day we would wake up to the possibility that we would throw open our curtains and see the reds marching down our streets, our government usurped and suddenly being able to buy really cheap and really bad Vodka everywhere.......... (And so on and so on)

Peak oil is forecasted to come about in the next few years and theres no alternative available.
Erm no, there is alternatives being developed, if not developed.
Yeah, for a start there was actually a nuclear fuel found which would leave no waste I believe. Apparently a tonne of the stuff could power ireland for a week. (Source: Over enthusiastic teacher)
Depleted uranium counts as waste. And it's non-renewable anyway. Only a limited amount of uranium on the planet. As well as that, mining and enriching takes energy. It's not a viable alternative for countries (like Ireland) that don't have existing nuclear infrastructure.

All of the alternatives that have been developed aren't available in large enough quantities to meet the world's energy demands when the oil runs out, which will be soon. Solar, wind, wave, and nuclear power fall far short of the energy output of carbon-burning power sources. And once the price of oil starts rising exponentially, nobody will be able to afford to construct the infrastructure for the solar, wind, wave, or biofuel plants. Basically if the planet had acknowledged this problem ten years ago when people first pointed it out we might have a chance. But now it's too late.
I wasn't talking about it leaving depleted uranium. But again, I don't have the specifics. I'll have to email him about it.

I was 18 in the UK in the mid nineties. We knew about things like depletion of oil reserves, global population, food shortages and global warming then but none of them seemed imminent or like something that would affect us. It looked like there was more world peace and prosperity in store for us. The end of the cold war was also not all that bad in terms of fear. We did have some problems believing in things. It is worse now. Enjoy the grim future that we have allowed to happen through our negligence.

You don't need to be old to realize this.

While I don't mention my actual age for obvious reasons, I will say that I realized this by the time I was 10.

... I've been waiting for this thread.
what this world needs... is a hero.
Not a Hero in the comic book sense, superpowers and high tech gadgets.
But just a man. or Woman. Someone willing to stand up and defend the weak and poor, someone who will not bow to legality, someone who's only code of RIGHT, and WRONG, is matched by his willingness to sacrifice everything he's ever known...
Not a white knight, but a dark one... The one people need right now. The one the world deserves...

Anyone know that guy? Tell him to start moving.

OT: Yes. The world's always been this screwed up. sorry mate, it's just usually better hidden.

Look at history. We're doing so much better. The world isn't going to hell, it's moving away from it, and it's only a question of whether or not it's about to crash.

In short Oh Noes we're all going to die. Accept it and make sure your enemies go before you. Try to do with 80's music in the background.

I've heard that certain drugs can be used as an alternative.

Well, either we're fucked, or we're not.
If we're fucked, we're fucked.
If we're not, then hey, what are we worrying about?

This sums up my presumably childish ignorant view of things...

I would like to add that 'older Escapists' instantly made me think of Escapists who joined in 2008 or 09...

if you lived in the Eighties you had real fear! Aid's, nukes, IRA terrorism I find Irish terrorism much more frightening than Islamic terror. We can just shoot anyone with a turban these days, back then it would have been anyone with Red hair and an interest in poetry!

Racism was epidemic, the UK was basically a floating Missle carrier for the U.S. we were shown a cartoon called when the wind blows which was one of the most gut wrenching and horrifyingly touching animations I have ever seen.

There was a fear that the Americans and the Russians would fall out and MAD would ensue.

These days of Paedophilia and Al Quida are childs play in comparison.

The only thing which makes today worse is that with this unrest and mental anguish we haven't been producing bands like the Subhuman's, Black Flag, Crass and MDC.

We choose to allow Justin Beiber to speak for the legions of disaffected youth!

I have learned to be careful please note some of this is satire and does not reflect the actual views of the Author.

Uh, I haven't felt any effects of all the "shit" that's going on in the world right now, so I can't really provide any intelligent comments.

I'm not "Cold War" old, but hell I've known the world is shit for a while now, hell global warming aside, it's just a matter of time before the world is destroyed/uninhabitable. Also not to offend anyone, but this is why we need more war. War, while generally bad has a few positive things. For one, it'll help reduce human populations, there are just too many humans. Two, it'll push development along, if it wasn't for war, we might not have the internet. Also with the limited resources and the demands of war, it could force people to invest more cost effective methods for everything. Lastly, nothing brings people together like a common foe.

Again, I'm not saying we need to start pissing off other countries, just saying from a purely logical standpoint it might not be all bad (and that's logic, not reason).
