To be hardcore, for me. You would really need to muix all those elements to be considered hardcore, so to speak

Other:

Simply put, it is the amount of enjoyment you get when playing video games. You don't need to spend a ton of money or have a massive library of games. You don't need to devote every free moment you have to playing either. The only qualifier for being a "hardcore" gamer is how much you enjoy video games, that is all.

How often you call people "noobs".
That's an awesome answer.

But I say what makes you a hardcore gamer is your knowledge of games. I know many people that play MW2 religiously but don't even know who made it or that the company was gutted over royalties.

OTHER: I don't care about definitions.

"The amount of time you spent playing"? do you know how much old people play games like solitare, other card games, casino games, and stuff like bejeweled? They would definately be "hardcore gamers" by that definition

When you really love what your doing and it's your lifestyle, as opposed to just playing games to pass time.

I think these are the major gamer types:

1) casual gamer - plays easy accessible games, or only plays occasionally.

2) regular gamer - plays harder more complex games. usually plays more than the casual gamer though gaming is still entertainment rather than a hobby.

3) competitive gamer - tends to play online RTS, FPS or MMORPGS, spends large amounts of time improving their competitive edge, tries to be the best. May play one game obsessivly.

4) hardcore gamer - loves games, to the hardcore gamer gaming is a hobby, they are involved in many facets and aspects of gaming culture, probably spends more time gaming than the regular gamer though won't fixate on one game like a competitive gamer.

Difficulty (difficulty setting, how far you go in MMO's before stopping, difficulty of game)
i play games and have a quite large steam account and all types of games, however, i usually play on a low difficulty setting for the story, when playing MMO (or other largely online games like Battlefield) i will play till i have unlocked (almost) everything then i usually stop unless im playing with a real life friend. I rarely play to be the best or on the highest difficulty, and consider those that do hardcore.

I met a hardcore gamer once. He taped his Xbox 360 controller down so that his character in Darksiders would ride around on its horse in a circle for 12 hours so that he'd get an achievement. He scares me.

That gaming is one of my favourite and lost-lasting hobbies.

As an aside, I hate the fact that the term hardcore gamer has now become taboo or politically incorrect in some way.

How well you play games. I could care less if you spend 18 hours a day on something, you can still suck at it. The hardcore are the ones that beat content as soon as it comes out on the hardest difficulty because they're that good.

"Hardcore" is an utterly meaningless term invented by people who play nothing but FPS's to talk down to gamers that enjoy other types of gaming.

Probably how seriously you take the game, if every time you die causes you anguish then you're probably hardcore.

And perhaps a little bit disturbed..

I personally take being called a hardcore gamer as an insult, i much prefer the term Veteran.

Shouldn't it be the number of different games you played? A guy who only plays FPSs isn't really hardcore, he's just a guy you really likes FPSs.
