MGS3 is possibly the most accessible of the lot. It was the first MGS I played. The references did not feel too daunting. With Subsistence, it introduces a 3D camera, which makes the gameplay somewhat less intimidating. It's easily playable as a standalone game set at the height of the cold war.

To be honest I wouldn't even class James bond as a spy. Spies are meant to sneak in, do what they have to do then sneak out or double/triple cross people and be under cover. James Bond does the first bit then fluffs the mission, gets caught, escapes then from my recollection Rambo's the gaff and foils the plot.
Spies are just people who work for military intelligence...

Spy

A spy doesn't have to be covert... as long as they get the information!

A spy doesn't even need to be in direct line of sight of the target to be called a spy... they just have to be obtaining information by a potential or actual enemy, and working for a higher authority... although not nessecarily if you look at 'spying' as a verb...

James Bond = MI:6, Snake = CIA, the US version of MI:6, can't get much closer than that!

You could just buy the MGS HD collection, which comes with MGS 1, 2, 3 and Peace Walker.

Though one reason i reccomend you to play them in order is the control schemes. Playing with MGS3 controls then going back to MGS1 or 2 is awkward to say the least.

EDIT: Really? Why has no one mentioned the HD collection?

That basically means Rambo or something is a spy.

What I am getting at is when you think spy you think of Adam Jensen or Sam fisher. What you said was anybody who gets information or watches closely is a spy, like you are going to pick up a spy game and it is a game about bird watching.

Like I said, it's just my opinion.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is actually a perfect place to start the series. That is the first game of the series I played and takes place at the earliest part in the Metal Gear timeline.

It is also my favorite game in the series...I'D GIVE MY LIFE!!

Yep, 3 is a great place to start. It, of course, has a lot of little references for those who have played the other games, but the plot is still comprehensible without working knowledge of the series mythos. It is also damn good besides, so pick it up! Just make sure to get the subsistence version though... The new camera controls really help.

I'm just an avid James Bond Fan, and wanted to see if your opinion had any weight to it... I guess we are all entitled to one, but I am going to go off of the definition!

If Rambo was sent to obtain information then he would be a spy. From the definition I also guess that anyone watching footage or looking at photo's from drones are also spies?

I think the perception of 'spies' just comes from the media representation. I guess we'll never know what it is actually like, so we just take what other peoples perceptions are!

I'm very happy to say I've followed the Metal Gear franchise from the very start of it way back on the NES (I even played Snake's Revenge, as terrible as it is), and I would personally recommend playing the Metal Gear Solids in the order they were made, and only after reading the backstory from the NES games, but that's just me. I'm somewhat of a hardcore fan.

Either way, I wholeheartedly recommend Snake Eater, it is by far the best game in the series if you ask me, and that's saying something. They are all brilliant.

We are getting off topic here but unless the film doesn't have those scenes I will think it's the same, pretty sure I have seen the spy who loved me and goldeneye but I dunno.

I know I have seen one with a tiny little helicopter coming out of a volcano, one with a robot dragon thing that breathes fire, one with jaws and one with the the fat Kung Lao (the guy who throws his hat) but that is probably the same film.
Judging from that, you seem to have watched You Only Live Twice, Dr. No, The Spy Who Loved Me, and Goldfinger. In case you were wondering.

I played MGS1 first, then 3, then 4, then 2. MGS2 was when the series escaped my comprehension; it's a pretty good game, but I'd almost recommend not playing it if you want to understand the overarching story. However, if it's the gameplay you're into, play them all.

MGS3 is awesome, go play it! I think it's actually better that you haven't played the rest of them, they would probably just confuse you.
