We've all seen the trailer, and it looks awesome, but I have to ask, as someone who hasn't read the comics: Is this going to be it's own series, or are they connected somehow to the Avengers? Because it doesn't even look like the same universe. Is this some parallel dimension thing?

Thanks in advance

The movie is stated to be a standalone, however given the character roster and the setting it's likely that there will be some setup to Avengers 3 and the possibility that they may even have a cameo, if not full involvement. Though apart from that and maybe a reference or two in Avengers 2, it's probably not going to tie into anything else in the MCU, at least for the foreseeable future (there is always the possibility that, if it works, Super Skrull and/or Nova will get their won movies, especially since the Nova corp. is in the trailer).

Give this a watch. It might not initially seem to have much to do with Guardians of the Galaxy, but it'll give you a good overview of how the Marvel Universe works and how the films are connected :)

I'd try to explain it myself, but I'd probably just end up being confusing.

Guardians of the Galaxy the movie IS in the same continuity as the movie Avengers. Other than that, at the present time at least, it has little to no connection to the Avengers (that will probably change). In the comics, however, some of the team's prominent members/supporting characters ARE actual Avengers: Moondragon, Mantis, Quasar, etc. None of them appear in the movie from what I understand.

As I understand it, they take place in the same universe and Guardians will have strong connections to that wacky magic technology world that Thor takes place in, but the two teams won't have much in the way of interaction, if any. Thanos being the villain is a strong possibility though.
