Ok, picture the scene. You're in a shop, any shop, waiting in the queue. There's only one person in front of you before it's your turn to be served. Suddenly an old woman will stand right next to you, usually uncomfortably close to you. Then, the very second the person in front of you's gone, the old lady steps directly in front of you and steals your place.
I've lost count of the number of times this has happened to me, I've even found myself watching out for them and stepping in front of them before they can do it to me. Mind you, this usually gets me a look from them like I've kicked a child and a comment such as 'arrogent boy' (i'm 18, I resent being called boy). This happened to my girlfriend recently, to my friends a few times and I can even remember this happening to my dad around 10 years ago, so I'm wondering if this ever happens to anyone else or whether it's just something about me and the people I associate with.

Old people think they deserve respect. They do, but not much as they want. If there's no seats on a bus then it's a good idea to get up for one, but only a necessity if frail. With stuff like your situation I don't think they have any right to cut in. They should accept and be grateful for people letting them cut in or giving them seats etc. but they shouldn't expect it.

If one says that again just say "self righteous prick", or if you really want to piss them off just say "child" in a mocking bored tone. Pisses them right off.

Well put, except I don't think ALL old people DESERVE respect, especially if they jump they queue. If they are polite and pleasant, or disabled, I am happy to let them pass.

Had this happen many a time waiting in maccas. One of the counter staff saw this happen and compleatly ignored the elderly cut in and asked me what I wanted to order. :p

Being old doesn't give you the right to push in front of people. There is a line for waiting, first in first served I believe.

That happens to me so much in the queue for the bus. Trouble is, if a pensioner does it, then no-one cares (except the person they cut in front of). If WE do it, then they rise up and call us ignorant sods or whatever. Why do they get the respect just because they're old? I mean, it's fine to let an old person in front if you want or if there's a good reason (e.g. frail), and yes we should respect our elders. But I draw the line at hypocrisy.

Not real respect just the "I won't laugh if you fall down the stairs" type. And that's my point, certain people should always be allowed to cut (pregnant, disabled, Bruce Campbell) while a few others should occasionally be allowed to pass (mother with screaming kids).

Never heard of it happening here actually. Though I do see what you're getting at. Old people are, well, old. And because of that they need assistance, which we give them through the government (if your country has an elderly support policy that is. Around here you pay taxes for these people).

Apart from getting up from your seat to offer it to them or the occasional allowing one of them to take your place in a queue when they only have two or three things to buy I don't think they have any right to assume we have to let them jump the queue because they're old. What, was she going to die on you if she didn't go before you?

Being of old age has a lot of disadvantages, comes with a couple of perks (e.g. you can pretend you can't hear someone talking, pretend to be sleeping during boring family meetings or get young people to carry your groceries for you) but none of these include queue jumping.

Damn elderly people, they're like a zombie horde...

i dont like people cutting in front of me without VERY good reason. especially not oversized children with a sense of entitlement. i dont care how old they are, i grew up with bad people, who manipulated and conned their way through everything, i dont like it, and i dont like it when people remind me of that, i dont like my emotions being manipulated and i dont like being abused and used for things. someone does that and it ALL comes flowing back, at that point i tend to get angry. i see it a lot more with young people than old(the high school lunch lines would often GROW in front of me), and i tend to be a little bit paranoid, but if im not in a hurry i MIGHT let someone who i dont think is lying cut in front of me. but as previously stated: im paranoid, VERY paranoid.

I've only had this done to me once.

"BACK OF THE FUCKING LINE, GRANDMA"

Worked like a charm.

Maybe it's more to do with a sense of urgency. They figure you still have years ahead of you but they are not sure if they will see out the day so they don't want to waste time in a line.

This never really pisses me off, unless the senior is an utter ****** who is openly bigoted against the blacks, arabs, the irish, the mexicans, and them damn catholics with every alternate word. I never stand in line if i don't have spare time so i can wait a few more minutes for my five dollar footlong, I never really am in a hurry i guess

I would like to go back to a favorite quote of mine: "There is not a problem that cannot be solved by finding the right person, and setting them on fire."

Explaination time! "This never really pisses me off, unless the senior is an utter ****** who is openly bigoted against the blacks, arabs, the irish, the mexicans, and them damn catholics with every alternate word". He is calling a senior who is a racist a '******' which in it's self its pretty much the pot calling the kettle black as my Grandma would say.

Many of the old people I have challenged over this, immediately tell me that they fought in the war for my freedom.
My usual response is "no you didn't, my parents weren't born until the 50's and I wasn't even thought of. you fought in the war to preserve your own damn freedom, just as I'll fight for mine should it become necessary". That usually shuts them up!

OOOOOOOOOH, thaaaaaaaaaats what you meant, i thought you were making a crack about my personality or something, i use ****** with the meaning a bundle of dry twigs, sticks, or branches, implying that all these people do nothing for the benefit of anyone (including themselves) except sit there gathering dust and occasionally verbally catching fire to be openly bigoted about the blacks, arabs, irish, mexicans, and them damn catholics .
