Sorry if this is a stupid question, but:

I just bought a VGA cord for my 360 so I can play it on my computer monitor, but I don't get sound. I'm just wondering, what do I need to get sound?

You need is a stereo female RCA mini-adapter I believe, a plug-in that you connect between your Xbox and spearks/stereo or whatever you're planning to use. Unless I'm mistaken.

I found this if it'll help:

It should come with two audio jacks and an adapter to plug it in to your computer. Unless your monitor has its own stereos and an input for the adapter, then you'll need to connect the adapter to your computer and use its speakers to generate sound.

Yeah, the only sound system I have for my computer is a usb headset, no speakers, not even on my monitor. And there is no place to plug in the audio jacks. There is a VGA port on both my computer and moniter though, but when I plug the cable into my computer and turn on my 360, it doesn't show up, its still my desktop and I can't find a way to bring up the 360 screen

And the same thing happens when my monitor is connected with my computer and I try to plug in the VGA cable into my monitor while still connected to my computer, and when I have just the VGA cable in I have no sound. I tried plugging in my usb headset into my 360 but I still got no sound.

Is there a way to goet my 360 to display on my monitor through my desktop?

Yeah its one of the reasons I hate the 360 design, I tried to use my dvi-hdmi converter for my 360, but to get sound I need to use the RCA output from the 360 to the monitor goodluck fitting those two cables into your PC.

ugh, isn't there some kind of converter or something like that for something like this?

It seems like something MS would do, make 1 product, then make another product so the 1 product could work for everyone.

I'm not sure how to switch between two displays on a whim either; I just unplugged my computer display and plugged the Xbox VGA cable in its place.

Did you get an adapter for the two audio jacks? If you did, you should be able to plug it into your computer (it was a pink-ringed input hole on the back of my computer, if I recall correctly) and if that's plugged in, using your USB headset with your computer should give you the sound.

Unless your sound card has a line-in slot, you might be out of luck with just a pair of USB headphones. Personally, I use the optical out to run to my speaker system. You need to by the extra cable (optical cables aren't very expensive, though), and that assumes your speakers have optical-in, but I have to say the sound quality is pretty good.

Before I got the speakers, I just used the RCA-to-3.5mm jack that came with the system, which I would usually plug straight into an old pair of computer speakers. Also, if you use a female/female adaptor, you could use that adaptor with 3.5mm headphones - which I thought I'd mention on the off-chance your USB headphones had dual plugs.

no, I didn't get an adapter, would one of them be available at Wal-Mart, or Gamestop, preferably Wal-Mart over Gamestop. And is it made by Microsoft or a 3rd party?

It has a line-in slot, my headset is all I have for sound at the moment since my speaker system died :(

My roommate used a screen while I used a tv and we both played Halo 3 and Fallout 3 at the same time. The difference was quite noticeable (especially in Fallout 3). Text was sharper and things just looked smoother.

I tried Gears 2 and COD4 and they both looked a hell of a lot better than on my tv.

But back to my other question, does anyone know where I can get adapter so I can use the audio on my computer?

Any electronics store - Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc. - will have a Y adapter that turns your 2 RCA plugs into one 1/4" headphone plug. That goes into the "line in" slot on your speakers or your sound card. The setup should look like this:

Xbox -> VGA cable -> Monitor
Xbox -> Audio cable -> Adapter -> Speakers / sound card
(Optional) Computer -> DVI cable -> Monitor (to avoid swapping cables all the time)

This is how I have my setup. My HDMI port is gathering dust :)

Ah, thank you, I'll go get it today, or at least look around for it.

They sell adapters at RadioShack for about $10

OK, so I got the adapter, plugged everything in, and it still doesn't work...

I have 3 holes on the back of my computer for sound and niether one of them work when I plug in the adapter

Are there differant types of adapters because I'm going to be pissed if I got the wrong one.

I've got a small adaptor that allows you to plug the two audio cables (red and white I think) which turns them into the 3.5mm connection (same as a pair of headphones0. You can then either plug this into whatever sound system yiou're using, or plug it into you're computer, which will run the sound through to the speakers also. That's pretty much how I do mine, and it works very well.
