So, I recently played Gears of War 2.

(Incidentally, I thought it was lousy. But that is not what this post is about.)

Anyway, since I never played the original, I'm not at all familiar with the setting and backstory.

I just wanted to know, why are Marcus and Dom (and the rest) so huge? Are they supposed to be genetically altered or on some sort of soldier-steroid? Or did they grow up in a high gravity environment? Or... are we supposed to believe that they just naturally grew up into space-ogres?

Just curious.

EDIT: Die, typos, die!

Does it matter? It seems like a lot of Epic characters resemble a wrecked car with facial animation.

At any rate, I always imagine Bender talking when Marcus is on screen.

"Kiss my Shiny Metal Ass."
Now see Marcus saying that in his growl. Hilarity XD

On-Topic: Marcus, Dom, and the rest of the C.O.G's G.E.A.Rs are big and beefy becaue they are part-genetically altered and part super-steroid, plus lots and lots and LOTS of combat experience.

I would go into super detail, but it would blow your mind and wreck my keyboard...

I believe we're supposed to believe they just naturally grew up into space-ogres. The other cogs you meet are more or less normal-sized. Same case with the handful of women in the world.

I have no idea what GunlockerLock is referencing in terms of steroids/genetic engineering.

Because either the character designers at Epic have severe confidence issues, or they think gamers do.

And given that Cliffy B's interviews show that he most definitely does NOT have a shortage of confidence, self-esteem, and bloatedness of the ego, I'm going with the latter.

I think its because normal looking soldiers are not badass enough for a game in which you cut aliens down with a chainsaw...

I could be wrong...

they are just freakishly huge, yet share many "bro moments" throughout the game, in a way its cute and adorable. For Gears in a nutshell watch "Gears of Awesome" it sums up gears rather nicely.

It doesn't really tell you, but you could kinda guess.

Their men in a war. Anybody small and puny would easily be killed, and they are powerful enough to fight to the death.

Because it's a videogame. The characters aren't supposed to be realistic.

Pointless thread is pointless.

The guy is asking a legit question referring to the backstory of a video game. Its not pointless at all.

As for the OPs question...

I believe it was stated that they are genetically modified. You could always use Wikipedia to find the answers to your question, they usually have good summaries about what happened.

Having read the two thus far released GoW books (Correct me if I'm wrong and the third one's already out *runs to Waterstones with monies*) There is no real mention of why COG soldiers are built effectively like the brick shit houses they are, apart from the ingestion of roughly 7500 calories a day to keep effective. This is also why the civilian population is as hard up as it is.

It's an issue I think GoW has skirted around quite neatly. The reliance on fossil fuels, internal power struggles, the discovery of light-mass technology (possible play on nuclear fusion is it ever gets off the ground), doesn't suggest that Sera's humans are colonists and have evolved there, in which case it's probably acceptable to assume that these humans just grew differently. Even if they did come from Earth originally, the colony was lost in some weird form of hyper-spatial anomaly that cut them off from the rest of humanity, it would appear they lost a large amount of tech, reduced almost back to savages and built up from there, and in this process developed overly large pectorals like paving slabs.

Regardless, it's just the way it is, and I doubt the developers expect you to think that deeply about the changes of the human form towards a Locust hunting killing machine.

It could be the Unreal engine that the game is built around. Then again it could also be because they are the last hopes for humanity.

@ezio_fangirl

wouldn't being a massive chunk of flesh make you MORE likely to die, as you're a much larger target and more likely to get pwned in the butt?

They're definitely larger than the strangers and non-soldiers you see around, Dizzy, Hoffman and the Carmines are all smaller. I would say it's genetics? I mean, you can't say they're on roids or anything, because their hands, heads and feet are also large, and in proportion to the rest of their body.
