I searched the web and I'm afraid you all going to say that I can't, but I wanted to know if it's possible to keep holding on to an item you drop from your inventory.

You see, I want to place a few items around my house, but I have to drop them first.
Usually they bounce around a bit and I have to chase after them.

Is there a way, like in Oblivion, that I can drop the item, but it stays in my hand / floating in front of me.

If not by default, any tips on a mod that makes this somewhat easier to place objects around my house?

Unless you have quick enough reflexes to catch the object before it hits the ground, I don't think so.
Provided you're playing on the PC, there'll most likely be a mod for it. They've done killable children, pony dragons and nudity so I'm sure they'll have modded it in, especially if the feature was found in Oblivion.

I'm afraid not, but don't bother with home decoration, the physics are messed up and every time you enter your house the items will be all over the place.

Yeah that's damn irritating. I really wish Skyrim had gone even further with the bookshelves/sword plaques and just had regular shelves/table to put assign items to. I got really fed up of repeatedly picking up my collection of ornate dragon claws up off the floor again and again.

You can drop items in Oblivion but hold onto them?
Well, hot damn.
After putting easily 500 hours into that game, I honestly didn't know you could do that.

So this is a problem for everyone then? Huh. The first time I noticed the messy state Breezehome was in, I thought I'd just been drunk gaming and decided to play soccer with everything in the house.

I spend so little time in the one house I own, I never thought about how frustrating the physics could be for people.

Well, I was afraid this would have been the answer, time to search on The Nexus or on the Steam Workshop for a mod.
I'll let you all know if I find something.

Actually the feature is still in the game. They hide is quite nicely though. You have to hold down the A button (on 360) while looking at an object. Hold it again to drop it.

If you're on console you can hold X (PS3) or A (360) and it will pick it up and you can move it around, but like people have said, you probably shouldn't bother considering the physics.

I'm aware of that feature, thanks though.
But what I meant was the following.

When you drop an item from your menu, it falls to the ground, and bounces a bit.
Then you pick it up the way you two described.
What I want is to avoid the falling part, and just drop the item "in my hand" so to speak.
This was doable in Oblivion by just holding down the drop button, but sadly this doesn't work in Skyrim.

Once you've dropped an item in your home, look at it and hold "A" on Xbox, or "X" on PS3, or your grab button on PC, to lug it around in front of your face like a thumb-less caveman swings a club.

couldn't have said it better my self. This game lacks a way to spin and twist the item in your grip.

In Oblivion if you pressed the "Hold" button in your inventory you would exit the inventory and it would immediately be in your hand, you didn't have to pick it up and the item was fixed in a position. That's what the OP means. Skyrim does not have this feature.

Exactly what I mean.
Though shame Skyrim doesn't have this feature.

Target the item and then press and hold the "use" key. After a few seconds, you should be able to drag the item.
