Tales of symphonia: the combat is fantastic, characters are great as is the story.....Man I wanna play it again.
KH1,2 and 358/2: Just so you can fully understand Roxas.
Rogue Galaxy: Story was Interesting and the characters where cool.

Tales of Vesperia and Persona 4.

I dont think P4 counts as quirky though, some bosses are fucked up...
Erm, are we thinking of the same P4 boss? Because I remember one that was HORRIBLY TRAUMATIZING SO I WILL NO LONGER MENTION IT. AH.

I didn't really LIKE Roxas, but yeah, it helps explain who he is, although the thing with Xion ended up not meshing very well with the rest of the story...

Just don't play Star Ocean - I was really let down by just sheer amount of cheese, I couldn't get my head around it to see anything else!
Oh gods. I tried to play Star Ocean First Departure (the remake of #1 for the PSP) and was so bad. I got like 4 or 5 hours in and I just said I couldn't handle the ridiculousness.

I know I'm going to piss some people off, but I felt the same about Valkyrie Profile. I couldn't get over the terrible voice acting and bizarre gameplay.

Final Fantasy 4 and 6, Secret of Mana, and Chrono Trigger. That is all.

Seriously, I bought one for the PS2 and it wasn't so bad, it sort of grew on me but I never completed it. Then the one I got for the xbox, thinking it would have improved - GAH hated it. I can only imagine playing it through if I put it on mute and go and make a sandwich or a drink everytime there is a cut scene. Liked the blindsiding though that kinda felt awesome.

As previously stated, Disgaea is a powerfully awesome game. Hilarious, and Prinnys are fantastic.

Also, Opoona is pretty cool in my opinion. Unique battle system, not a bad story, and interesting art design.

There's the stock answer of the SMT series and for good reason, they kick ass and defy or subvert most of the stereotypes that the genre is known for.

Also there's the Wild arms series specifically 2/3 for messing with making random battles a tad less frustrating and the wild west twist.

Final Fantasy series - Read about each game individually to find which one suits you
Chrono Trigger
Star Ocean 2 & 3 - 4 was just annoying to me
Suikoden 2 = bomb
Kingdom Hearts

As a sidenote...Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon? really?

Wow, so many responses. Seriously, I think I'm gonna go out and buy all of these for my upcoming term break.

I also just thought of another one. Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime. I swear to god, it may be for kids, but it's just so freaking COOL.

if anyone (outside of this site) suggested to me a JRPG, i have a shovel that makes a satisfying *CLANG* sound when i swipe it across their head.
