You might consider looking into Dungeons and Dragons Online - since it went free to play it will certainly be easy on your wallet initially. I've been finding it pretty fun recently, but then again I'm a gigantic nerd who loves D&D (tonight's my pen & paper gaming session, glee), so your mileage might vary.

But hey, it's free!
Does DDO play at all like the Pen and Paper version does? I loved the social aspect (as well as general craziness) of meeting on game days, however I am now stuck in an area that has no club/gaming group.

OT:
You can also try LOTRO when it comes out for F2P, I know I am.

I'm not really big on MMO's. But I heard Everquest is good. That starwars one looks interesting...

As someone who has played a lot of MMORPGs (including WoW), my recommendations are Pirates of the Burning Seas if you want a multiplayer Sid Meier's Pirates!, Dark Age of Camelot if you like Norse/Celtic/Anglo-Saxon mythology and PvP or PvE sieges (PvE sieges are only on carebear servers, if that matters to you) with appropriate weapons (ballistae, catapults, boiling oil, etc), or Ultima Online if you just want freedom to do what you want without being restricted to levels.

Apparently many people are like that. I don't get that, as if game universes (and it's not just the Warcraft universe) are not allowed to progress.
Well I'm not against change.
I could live with the way they implemented Shamans/Paladins for both sides, as they bothered to create a plausible explanation with it.

As for the Nightelf mages.
It didn't made much sense to me.
After nearly destroying the world with their hunger for power, which dwells in most users of arcane arts, they revoked from it.
They altered their decadent lifestyle and chose the path of druidism.

In my opinion that's a wound, which will never heal.

I just didn't have the feeling they wanted to have the world progress.
It felt more like they wanted to please the people crying for it.

Maybe Global Agenda? It's a Sci-fi shooter MMO thingy. But it works really well!
You can download an unlimited trial from steam. I had fun with it anyway :(

I got a good mmo for you, real life. Seriously though avoid grind based mmos they're not worth your time.

Well it's not turn based, and it takes a bunch of liberties given the medium, and when you get right down to it it's really only focusing on the parts of D&D where you kill things (well that's not entirely true, but you won't find adventures where you have to roleplay your characters at a royal ball or anything), but otherwise yeah, it's a surprisingly faithful translation of 3rd edition D&D rules. If you're familiar with those it's rather easy to pick up the game without finding it confusing.

The actual adventure areas are all instanced, so there's no camping or kill-stealing to be found. If you do happen to go into a dungeon by your lonesome and "buy the farm", you don't have to bite the bullet and resurrect at the nearest point you bound your spirit to though, as the way the party system works is anyone in your party can enter a dungeon and be in your instance of the dungeon - and you don't have to be alive or outside the dungeon to make those invitations, so your buddies could come along and revive you without needing to have been gaming with you to begin with. It's actually a really cool way to handle instancing.

Oh, another thing worth mentioning - at least on the server I've been playing on the game has been pretty much lag free, which is somewhat surprising and definitely welcome.

That's what I thought.
But the more info was released, the more similar it looked to WoW.

I was happy to see a MMORPG without the classic triangle system.

I could start ranting about, how stupid I find the idea of jedi tanks, or decicated jedi healers (yeah I know, the lore states there has been at least one, but that doesn't justify thousands of them running around), but I won't.
I don't want to tear my hair out...

True, the idea of it is retarded. But where else can you play as a Bounty Hunter who joins the Republic, or a Jedi who joins the darkside. This whole entire game is with the fourth pillar known as STORY, have you seen the live gameplay and voiced actors? Its exactly like mass effect, you choose GOOD/NEUTRAL/EVIL choices that can never be changed. THATS WHY I LOVE BIOWARE!

Well I haven't been following this game for some time now.
Has there been any new word on the endgame content?
PvE, PvP, crafting and such?

World of Warcraft is the King of MMORPG's for a reason.
And the reason is...?
It's better than the others, oddly enough. They've got hold of a massive playerbase and kept them happy and paying.
not really better, just has more content

aion is pretty good, altho at the launch it starts lacking quests after lvl 20 so the grind gets annoying, I think they added more tho

It's hard to say, it's unforgiving, full of money sinks, offers little guidance as to where you're supposed to be going and, even with the patch, is rather grindy. I like it though, it has slow progression, and the PvP is very fun. I don't know the full effect of the patch making things less grindy as I'm almost lv.46, but they have added 8 quests which are repeatable 10 times each to this one town I've been in, and I've levelled nearly 4 times off them alone, which is a lot at lv.46. I was able to do 43-46 in under a week, before the patch it would've took me about 2 weeks, maybe even more when without the quests, I would've been made to grind mobs, which I can't devote myself to do. I think they've added similar quests in every zone though, it's just a matter of finding them.

I can't recommend Aion, because a lot of people I know don't like it for the aforementioned reasons. I don't really mind them myself, it makes the game more satisfying. You could look on YouTube or get more opinions, because it's a love or hate game. I don't want to say "buy it", only for you to find out it's not your thing, and it's still like £20 with a free month or something.
Thanks alot, deffs gonna look into it, nice to hear a balanced review of a game rather than, omg i play _____, buy it. That goes for 99% of these posts too, i like this forum :)
I gotta say I love your avatar, also warhammer online, you might wanna check it out, they have a free thing going on for it, like you can play up to lvl 10 or 20 or something and not have to pay, its got really good pvp and they fixed all the launch bugs it had, Ive wanted to get back into it but for some reason I can never log into my account and Im too lazy to call tech support and risk getting mmo addicted again

Just take three months or so off, be warned after a hiatus of that length when you relog the addiction will return stronger than ever.

League of Legends. It's a multiplayer online battle arena, based on DOTA, and its unbelievably fun, with about 50 champions and more being added, and new patches and maps being added too, and its free. Not "free, but you need to pay to unlock the best stuff" free, but completely free. You can get all of the content without paying. What better reason do you need.

http://www.leagueoflegends.com/

It's acronym is LoL.

FREE!

Avoid aoin like the PLAGUE!
It's a truly abysmal game.
If it's not timesinks, it's either money or resource sinks.
The game balance for want of a better word is retarded, you can basically rule out melee classes in PVP.
Not only is there an XP grind for levels, then you have to grind PVP levels, and the more points you have, the more you lose when you get killed.
Also prepare to be ganked a LOT.
Once you hit about 20-25, the levels you grind in are open to the other side, so packs of 50's come along and slaughter the lowbies, because there is nothing else to do whatsoever once you hit the upper levels.
You have to pay for everything!, when you die, you pay.
When you get to a new area you have to bind there, for which you pay, the higher level you are, the more you pay.
There are no mounts, so you spend a HUGE amount of time travelling.
Craft skills are pants, the resources needed are prohibitively expensive, or take an inordinate amount of time to gather, many require rare items, which are truly rare in the sense that they are hard to acquire, but are a staple of making items.
Oh and the number of quests which have you travelling halfway round the world of which there are many, simply to finish by talking to some dude 20 feet away from the dude who gives you the quest will drive you insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's so unbalanced, that every 2 weeks they had a double xp weekend simply to allow people to level up!
Cheating and gold sellers are rampant and ignored by the devs.
There is no support, the forums are pants.
Then there is the pathetic attempt to make it a pay to play game, for example on Valentines weekend, you could pay 7 Euro, half a months subscription for some fucking chocolates and 10 red dyes!(and that was per TOON NOT PER ACCOUNT).That's where their priorities lie, fluff and ephemera, stuff that actually makes no impact on the game, but looks "pretty".

No, no word, so far i think they are still working with the characters and creating worlds. so far they are on Planet 13 *Hoth Planet* but i wouldn't be suprised if they continued to 50 planets. Plus i think they are gonna keep ingame content like endgame and crafting out of the wraps until they release the game, just to screw with people.
