So... I'm quiting smoking. Two days now without a fag. Not fun, but I've got a mountain to climb (literally) and I need to spend the next year getting healthy before I go.

Any tips on how to make this easier?

Well, two days is a start. I know some people who can't go a day but wanted to stop themselves. I'd just say keep your mind occupied with other things so the thought of smoking doesn't come back. I guess as long as you can get some constant motivation, all should be well.

You ever try those nicotine patches? Or the nicorette gum? Worth a try, may actually help you.

Focus on why you want to quit... My grandfather used to smoke a lot. Then he had a health scare... He was alright, but after thinking that smoking had given him a fatal disease, he realised that he didn't want to take the risk anymore.

Three days. Feels a little easier now. How long before you stop craving them?

been three weeks for me and I had a craving last night, I'd like to say it gets easier quickly but it doesn't. It'll take quite a while before the cravings will go away.

The biggest part about quitting smoking is adjusting your life around not smoking, I know that the first week or so of quitting I'd instinctively grab for smokes whenever I'd get into my car.

The first three days are some of the worst though, if you've made it this far you'll be fine.

I'd expect to have withdrawal like symptoms up to a week after quitting after its just the urge to smoke. After that its all physiological. This is personal experience.

When i'm in a bad or stressful mood thats always when the urge comes back so i'd say stay out of those situations. If you've made it this far cold turkey though I think you should try normal gum, putting more nicotine back in your system after going cold turkey is not what you wanna do. Nicotine products are more for a step down approach. Now you just wanna get rid of the compulsion.

One trick I have heard is if you feel the urge to smoke, give it 5 minutes and occupy your mind with something else. You might notice the craving will subside.
