"Progress doesn't come from early risers - progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things"

in school you're taught that effort is worth as much, if not more than your results but when you get out into the real world you learn that's a lie; your effort means dick all if your best attempt wasn't good enough and you don't get paid more for working hard. There's no virtue in working harder than you need to to achieve your objective and the best solution is the one that doesn't require you working like a robot.

And I have another quote that has stuck with me, although I don't know it exactly nor do I know the author.

"Live a good life, and strive to do good. If there is no god, you still have lived a good life. If there is a just god, you shall be rewarded. If there is an unjust god, you would not have wanted to serve it."

This single quote sums up my philosophy as an Agnostic. I don't know what god is true, if any, but neither does it matter to me. I would live my life the same even if I was absolutely certain one way or another.
Oh, that's a good one. Fellow Agnostic here, and that matches my philosophy fairly well too. Let me know if you ever find out who wrote it; I'd be very interested to find out.

Two spring to mind, both from social critics/comedians/whatever you think of them.

Reasoning will never make a man correct an ill opinion, which by reasoning he never acquired...
- Johnathan Swift

This is something that always comes to mind when I see some of the more intense arguments on the internet, and has kept me from involving myself in them, knowing that nobody will come out of it well.

What's the purpose of meeting with each other when we already agree? Find someone who disagrees and invite them to your table. Invite your enemy to talk. Give them a platform to talk because then they will reciprocate. [...] Establish dialogue. It's when the talking stops that the ground becomes fertile for fighting.
-Daryl Davis, a black musician who befriended members of the KKK, most of whom left the organisation after getting to know him. Read more about him [a href=http://guardianlv.com/2013/11/kkk-member-walks-up-to-black-musician-in-bar-but-its-not-a-joke-and-what-happens-next-will-astound-you/]here[/a], if you're interested.

In a way, those two quotes may seem a bit contradictory, but at their heart they are both about the dangers of ignorance and close-mindedness, and I personally think the world we be a better place if more people took these two lessons to heart.

"SO YOU HAVE COME. THEN YOU SHALL DIE AGAIN!"

Best dialogue battle with any boss ever. And perharps the only one who can use full caps without looking pretentious.

After an adventure on The Google, I have found it. I really butchered the quote.

"YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!"
-Illidan

....sorry that popped into my head and i felt it had to be said.

On a more serious note:

"If you pray for courage do you think God grants you courage or the opportunity to be courageous?" -God, Even Almighty.

That might be more of a paraphrase but its still stuck with me since i've heard it and what I think about when i pray, because, its really true.

"With every mistake we must surely be learning"

- George Harrison, While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Whenever I'm feeling down, I say it over and over until I feel it and turn a bad day into a learning experience, makes me feel better.
Because it's pretty close to

"I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
- Thomas Edison
You know, I wasn't there when Edison said it, and every time I think about it a could almost swear he was saying it for comedic purposes, but either way, it's still true.

Why, this is Hell
Nor am I out of it
Thinkest thou that I,
Who has seen the face of God
And tasted the eternal joys of Heaven
Am not tormented with ten thousand hells,
In being deprived of everlasting bliss?

~Mephistophilis

I rather liked Mephistophilis, really. Not too often in stories of conjured demons do you have the conjured outright say "stop this, you're an idiot".

"You don't have an inferiority complex, Wesley. The sad truth is you're simply inferior."
-Angelus, Angel.
All Wesley really wanted was to be good enough at something to make a difference. He was continually tormented by the fact that he wasn't. Angelus precisely skewers him with this quote. It's all the worse because Angelus doesn't lie. He speaks the truths Angel never would. Angelus knows that even if they banish him, Wesley has to live with the knowledge that his best friend considers him not-quite-sidekick at best, worthless at worst.

-"Would you kindly"

Three (plus many more I'm forgetting) from Pratchett:

-"Excuse me, but you need us."
"Pardon?"
"The good people are good at overthrowing the bad people. And you're good at that, I'll grant you. The trouble is that's the only thing you're good at. You overthrow the tyrant, and it's parties and victory throughout. Before you know it, everyone's complaining that it's been two weeks since the trash was picked up."
-Vetinari (terribly paraphrased)

"I haven't made many friends. Don't seem to have the knack. On the other hand, I don't have any enemies at all."
-Mister Teatime, one of the creepiest villains in the history of ever

-This is how Vetinari's mind works, Vimes exulted. He doesn't plan. Planning is for fools. The wise man steers.
This is true. I've made many a plan and watched with bemused horror as they've been flushed down the toilet. Take action today against today's problems, because today is as close to certainty as you'll ever get.

I GOT THA BEAST IN MAH SIGHTS *brakoom*

-Big Game Fucking Hunter. Singlehandedly being the biggest fun killing card in Hearthstone.

OT: The one small scene in Devil on the G-String setting up Maou's character early is good. He basically plays a finger counting game with some guy who has a degree in game theory who's set to take over from him, the guy thinks he's hot shit because he knows that it's just a case of whoever gets the first go wins by default. Maou insisted on a several minute time limit per turn, he's about to lose but he breaks the guy's finger to win saying something like:

"I set the time limit because the very first move should have been you breaking my thumb and I needed the time to recover from the pain."

Perfect character building.

A LOT of quotes from Umineko No Naku Koro Ni are great but i'd be paraphrasing too hard for most. I can just settle for Ushiromiya Battler's signature catchphrase. Best said with a little smug small shake of the head into counterargument.

"Ahh dame da. Zen zen dame da!"

Translation as "Ah that's no good, no good at all!"

His voice actor makes it sound like the coolest catchphrase ever. Like there's a pitched high tension argument going on, and those words suddenly stop the argument dead as he shuts the argument down. It's fucking great. His little sister even picks it up from him.

It pulls double duty as the winning and losing phrase, imagine it being said cutting someone's terrible argument to pieces then imagine it being said when he's backed into a corner by perfect reasoning. It works both ways perfectly.

Also Bernkastel has some good lines, in Episode 8 she says something like "It was a mistake to take tea with you, Battler. Just two sips in and it's already far too sweet for me" said somewhere inbetween being secretly slightly moved by, or genuinely scornful/disgusted by his speech about him calling her his new friend.

I would add Erika because she has some very... memorable phrases she's fond of but I hate every single one of them and I badly want her to just die. Everything she says or does irritates me to no end. It must be intentional by the writers surely. The best thing she does is set up Battler for the perfect killing comeback line in like Episode 5 or 6.

"Welcome everyone! I am Furudo Erika, the 19th person on the island of Rokkenjima!"

"Sorry, there are only 17."

*gunshot*

Makes more sense in context of course.

"I had a dream of my wife. She was dead but it was OK" ~Max Payne~

I'm not sure why that's stuck with me for as long as it has...I've kept that quote close by sense I first beat that game however many years ago. Nothing like coming to terms with change and moving on I guess!

This quote from Oz has always stayed with me

Hill: Every once in a while, I remember something I did when I was a child. Or something that was done to me, by my father, or my brother, or a cousin. Some injury. Some humiliation. And it seems like... it happened to another person, a century or two ago. I'm not really sure if what I remember really took place at all. You can't build your life, relying on the perception of a little boy, or the echos of some memory. Nah. You got to let all that shit go. You gotta start, fresh. Every single day. You have got to start again.

I'm not sure if this counts, because it doesn't exactly stand alone, but the way Jim Butcher ended this arc in the Dresden Files stuck out to me quite a bit. It might not mean much to people who haven't read the series, and it doesn't give enough context to really be a spoiler, but in case you're reading through and don't want to risk it this is from Changes:

And I...
I used the knife.
I saved the child.
I won a war.
God forgive me.

Yeah, that ones a doozy. Bit heavy though.

My favourite Dresden quote is:

"The building was on fire and it wasn't my fault".

Hm, whenever I see impatient people I think about one from a little book called "Children prayers to God" (roughly translated)

"Dear God, please give me patience.... RIGHT NOW!!"

Another is from Anchorman, and even though I have not actually seen it, there is one quote from it that just stuck.

"60% of the time, it works every time"

My current favourite is from Kingsman: The secret service

"Manners maketh man"- Harry Hart

"There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self." - Harry Hart

I know they are from William Horman and Ernest Hemmingway respectively, but nevertheless I love them.
