I recently finished the Vergil's Downfall DLC for the latest Devil May Cry, and while the combat feels really solid, and I had a lot of fun with it, it pretty much killed any hope I had of the character ever being like his DMC3 version.

Some context for those who don't know what I'm talking about. In DMC3, Vergil is the brother of Dante, he seeks the power of his father, Sparda, who was a ridiculously powerful demon. This desire for power stems from his inability to protect his mother from being killed. While Dante compensates for this failure by being aloof, not really caring about anything, Vergil believes that 'might controls everything, and without strength, you can not protect anything, let alone yourself'. He is calm, calculating and this shows in the way he fights, with precise movement, the opposite to his brother's almost chaotic fighting style.

He is nothing like this in the new DmC. He's a mummy's boy with an inferiority complex, and his voice actor is just... bleh, I know it's a reboot, but while Dante still retained a lot of what made him Dante, Vergil pretty much lost everything that made me like him as a character.

Voice comparisons.

Compared to his voice actor in DMC3...

I hope this didn't come across too much like fanboy whining :D

Anyway, for the sake of discussion, have any characters you liked been unfairly killed off/changed so that they don't resemble the original?

While I can't think of an example so far, I think this may happen with Sam Fisher in the new Splinter Cell. Unless Michael Ironside's replacement does a fantastic job, people will definitely start saying RIP Sam Fisher I think.

Ninjas, Damn.

But yeah, this, very much this. This guy really needs to pull off the character well, and he has to be at least on par with Ironside. From what I've seen though, they've turned him from "military man with an iconic growl and a dark sense of humor" to "Generic Military Man #160,543". I really hope that the demos aren't indicative of the final product here.

Samus Aran. We all know which game I'm talking about, so don't make me dirty my keyboard by typing it.

What in the bloody hell are you talking about? Everyone knows that the last Metroid game was the final Metroid Prime title, in 2007. Samus Aran hasn't been in a title of her own since, though she had some imitator in some shitty title who was named Aamus Sran. But we all know that's not part of the Metroid series, right? RIGHT?

Big Boss/Solid Snake, if David Hayter decides not to reprise...
Anyone who takes on that role after David Hayter's departure is pretty much going to need to do an impression of his voice, because that's the iconic growl we've come to know and love. If they go with anything different, it's just not going to work very well. Now Big Boss's voice has demonstrably changed, but that is because he got older and by the time we see him in MGS4 he's had some reconstructive surgeries and therapies(being in a coma for years really does some crazy things to your body). Just changing the voice randomly in between titles and acting like nothing happened wouldn't jive well.

To be honest, I think that already happened with Conviction. :(

Sure, it was still Ironside's voice, but the character had already gone from a gruff but also darkly humorous operator, who avoided direct action when possible and could get mercs and terrorists to spill all their secrets with little more than a growl, to "GRAAARGH SHOOT EVERYBODY, AND PUNCH EVERYONE WHO TRIES TO HELP ME IN THE FACE!"

I think I was one of the only people that noticed the change in Mordin's voice actor.
He's still good, but... not Mordin good.

I've also been playing Tales of The World on PsP, and from what I had heard it was basically "super awesome Tales of Crossover play as all your favourite characters" but I was sorely disappointed. Lloyd got a voice actor change and has been given subtle character changes so he no longer acts like Lloyd. Kratos and Raine barely say anything, and Genis had like... a role in one cutscene. Or something.

Oh, and fucking Anders in DA2. What the flying buggery fuck, Bioware.

If we're basing answers on voice actors reprising their roles, then I hope no one reboots the Legacy of Kain series, because it just isn't Nosgoth if Tony Jay isn't in it.

Cyclops. They've pretty much butchered him in every way possible for the last ten years or so. Cheating on his wife, murdering his mentor, generally transitioning from "moral compass of the team" to "giant jerk". Yeah, we get it, Wolverine is the anti-authority rebel, and Cyclops is the authority he rubs the wrong way. But that doesn't mean you turn him into an actual villain.

Cole Macgrath from Infamous initially had a huge change from 1 to 2, then the fans had a huge tantrum over it and they changed him. Now I like the changed version better but back when it was first announced there bitching was pretty ridiculous

Infamous 1 cole on the right, left is the "new cole"

Infamous 2, the newer version of cole after the backlash

RIP Crash Bandicoot from the PS1 era. You were never the same after Activision acquired you and now you're being left to rot in the room where they horde all their unused IPs.

;_;7 RIP in piece Crash.

That's easy to solve. Just use the Japanese voice actor and tell the players that it's "more authentic" that way.

I'll go with Shaundi from Saints Row 2. She was completely different in a bad way in The Third.

I'm just going to go with "a majority of the Resident Evil cast" for both scenarios.

Can't really think of any others aside from the first side kick in The Last Templar.

Yeah, the hippy turned reluctant gangster was a better character.

R.I.P Alex Mercer

I know he was never a "good guy" and that he was an anti-hero at best, but seriously what the fuck?
I must have missed the whole part where he turned into a saturday morning cartoon villian in between the two games who for some reason now wants to destroy the very thing he helped save in he first game.

I think i remember in a game interview that they said they wanted to make him and "interesting villian"
If he was ment interesting he would made me think about his motivations instead of be downright confused by them

EDIT: dammit ninja'ed

Ah yes; ninjas. Basically, this guy has it spot on. Damn it Activision, you had One Job!
