Sucks man. Im a bit scared for my PS3. Its on old 60gb and makes the most awful noise when I play Dark Souls.

I have broken my DS and my PSP trying to repair them. To be fair, they were already not working, but now theyre really not working.

Well, now you can by a PC. Or Xbox. Or Wii. Or another PS3. OR ALL OF THEM!
Doesn't the fact that he's posting here show he most likely already has a PC?

On topic though, I'm sorry for your loss, I know how it feels. I lost a console before too, it was quite painful.

My Windows Xp which I put a lot of hard work and cash into transforming it from a office PC to a gaming PC died when the entire mother bored went south on me. I miss that PC, at least I saved its hard drive to use in this PC. I feel your pain

I've never had a console die on me now that I think about it. Really the thing I would end up mourning most is the loss of data. I would hate to find I had pretty much just entirely wasted so many hours.

May we have a moment of silence.

Sorry to hear that. Did you try plugging it into another electrical outlet? My Xbox once died due to a lightning storm, but when I plugged it into another outlet it worked fine again. It's worth a shot.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! A fellow brother in arms is missing in action.

Send a letter to the family.

Anyway, that's sad to hear. I couldn't bear leaving my PS3. We've had some many good times together. He's stuck with me through thick and thin.

Here's a cute kitten to make you feel warm on the inside.

Feel better soon!

So, on Sunday my flat was struck by lightning. My tv and sattelite box was killed, but somehow the red light on my PS3 gave me hope. And yet today, when I got a new tv, the PS3 refused to communicate with my tv. After trying every cable I own, I came to the sad realisation.

My PS3 has been killed.

It's not even the fact that I've lost months of saved games and data, it just feels like I've lost a friend. An intrinsic part of me has gone. I know some of you have felt this, so feel free to share your stories of awesome consoles, computers and handhelds that have passed on. How did it make you feel?
Hit it again with electrictiy. it could still be ressurected!
I thought about doing that, but where would I get the voltage?
Ask Doc Brown, but I would get a carpet and nice pair of socks should do the trick. Seriously tho your data might be ok in the hard drive. Take it to a game repair store, have them rip out ze brain and put it in a used (or new) ps3

i don't care. had you said "my PS2 has died" i would have been upset for you, i remember the ps2 as being a brilliantly versatile little device which brightened my childhood. the PS3 isn't awful, it isn't even bad. it's better than the 360 certainly, its just too new to have any appeal to me.

I'm worried about my PS3, it is one of the old models and the amount of "You have less than 500MB of space" messages I've been getting is becoming more common.

It has gotten to the point that I have nothing left to delete, and I'm still low on space :/

I don't think I ever had something like this. Even my old SNES and first-gen Gameboy are still going strong, although with the occasional glitch and power failure.

Sorry about you losing your PS3 though :(

Most likely the MB is just fried, I've never seen a surge kill an HDD. I'd try just swapping it into another PS3 of the same Rev.
Nope, won't work. As with modern TV sets that allow you to record to USB hard drives, all data on the drive gets encrypted and locked to that one system. If you connect your PS3 system hd via USB, you'll get nothing. If you plug it internally into another PS3, old or new, that PS3 will want to format it, very little questions asked.

That's why backing up data over USB (hd/flash drives/whatever) or onto PlayStation Plus is a generally good idea. Besides, by doing regular back ups you'll also learn which publishers tend to lock down their save game data, preventing you from backing them up... oh and PS1, PS2 PSPand minis save data CANNOT be backed up.

My Xbox died, as well, but that was a bit worse because it was all I had to game on, but it died when the Xbox 360 came out, so it wasn't so bad.

I'm not particularly close, per say, to my game consoles. The first time my Xbox 360 died I thought that the graphics card going crazy and leaving the game looking as if it just took some acid was pretty fun. I just sent it in and got it back a while later. It died three times after that.
