you guys do all realise that this movie is FICTIONAL dont you?
What a peculiar thing to say.

If the movie were to be 'Passion of Christ' (need to double check that title) and you were to say this I would expect a probation. However because these are norse gods, who have fallen out of vogue, this is okay.

I'm not advocating you get in trouble but it is strange that you think the issue here is completely bypassed by reminding us that it is intended as a work of fiction.
i wouldnt see an issue with a passions of the christ with a black jesus.

but from what i understand this is a fictional movie based on a comic book where the god isnt the actual god its a character called a gods name.

i really just dont see the issue here. if the actor can act what does it matter what colour skin they have? i would prefer a good black actor over a white bad actor.

maybe its just that im not racist or religious and thats why i dont see the issue.
I wasn't suggesting that Jesus being black would be an issue (although it would), I meant if YOU said that Passion of Christ was 'FICTIONAL' then would that not get you in trouble (or in the least be an abrasive thing to say)?
i get what your saying.

hopefully wont get probations or anything but in my oppinion pasions was as fictional as this thor movie. but thats cause i dont believe in god so there for if there was a jesus then he cant have been the son of god.

but thats getting abit off topic.

black norse god ok in my books as long as they are the best choice for the part and not just there to cause controversy like this thread.

Firstly, english is not my native language, so this might be a little off.. :p
I'm norwegian, and I've always been fascinated by the norse mythology (not believing mind you, I just like the stories). And while I have noe problems with a norse god being portrayed by a black man, I find it funny that they chose a black man to play Heimdall.
The following is from wikipedia in norwegian: "Navnet Heimdall betyr kanskje «den klartlysende» eller «den som lyser over verden». Dette passer godt med kallenavnet "den hvite ås", og at han omtales som «den hviteste av alle æsene»."
This says that name of Heimdall is meant to be interpreted as "The one who shines over the world".. so no problem so far.. the problem comes when we reach his nickname: "the white hill". And also the fact that he's described as "the whitest of all æsene (read: norse gods).

Still I look forward to seeing the movie, and I'm sure Idris will do a good job in the movie.
Signing off...

I totally want a black god to show up now, just to see the look on the faces of people like this...

[small]Racist fucks.[/small]
Make an all white cast and crew: You catch shit for being racist

Make a culturally diverse cast and crew: You're shot down for reverse-racism

When can a movie JUST BE A FUCKING MOVIE!?

This sounds good to me. All the racists can go boycott what they like, that just means there will be less racists in the cinema...

I cant say I know much about comics, ok I take that back I know nothing about comics outside of the X-men cartoon show that was on in the 90's and the few comic movies that have been released in recent years. However I have to agree that a black Heimdall seems like a political correctness move.

As has been discussed Heimdall is a norse diety. He appears in the poems Völuspá, Lokasenna, Þrymskviða, Rígsþula, and Hrafnagaldr Óðins (there may be one or two I missed). If memory serves in one of the poems he's even called "The whitest of gods" or something to that effect. In a movie about a historically documented pantheon I think sticking to source material is important but wait the case can be made that the comics source material is different and shouldnt be held to such stringent standards. Except that isnt. After doing a google search I found a few pictures of marvels heimdall and hes white too. So whether Marvel wants to take the approach of "were following Norse mythology" or "were following our comics established story" they're wrong on both counts.

If they want to write a story of the comic version of Heimdall becoming black, then hey thats fine. Might make a nice story. Its just that right now it just looks like political correctness gone wrong and thats not even considering anyone practicing the norse religion who might get annoyed. I have a friend who follows the philosophy of the norse by living his life to the fullest each day and he considers himself a practicing Norseman.

Lets take a second and think about this in another way, if this were a movie revolving around the Voodoo pantheon and they had Shango played by Sylvester Stalon would there be just as much annoyance and outcry? I think the answer is yes (although the source of that outcry would likely be centered in Haiti).

That said, I dont think theres any racism going on by marvel but I do think this situation is charged by political correctness and I dont like that. However I'll still be going to see the movie because its not a deal breaker for me and I find these kinds of films interesting
