Radiant Historia Questions PLEASE HELP!

I've just reached a point in the game Radiant Historia where I was taught how to prime explosive barrels. The problem is that to do this, I need to press the L1 button on my DS, which is completely broken. Now I haven't run into any problems that require the explosives in the main story, I've only noticed a couple rocks blocking chests that I'm totally fine with leaving behind. What I need to know is if I will absolutely NEED the explosives skill to progress through the story. If there is any way for me to work around this, please let me know.
Note: I'm only renting the game so it's not a big deal if I can't. I just don't want to end up being truncated by a boss made of powder kegs or something.

IIRC there are a few parts where you do need to blow up some barrels to progress and there isn't anyway around it apart from a new console I'm afraid =/

Have you tried blowing into the shoulder button (like from every angle just blow as hard as you can)? It's no permanent fix, but my old DSi it would at least temporarily fix the issue for anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour.
